BMW X3 expert review

Autocar score
8

The BMW X3 evolves the compact luxury SUV with sharper styling cues and a poised stance that bridges everyday usability with a premium presence. The grille and headlamp design look more integrated and modern than before, and the overall proportions remain balanced and purposeful without flamboyant flourishes. Ride height and ground clearance suit both urban surfaces and rougher patches of road.
Engineering stays true to BMW’s premium SUV DNA, with a chassis that supports composed dynamics and a suspension setup that prioritises controlled ride comfort. All variants use BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, which helps smooth power delivery across conditions.

Inside, the X3 feels well built and refined. Quality materials and a driver-centric layout give it a premium feel, and the large central touchscreen and digital driver display add a modern, high-tech vibe. Front seats provide good support and adjustment range, while rear passengers enjoy generous legroom and headroom for this class. Boot space is practical for luggage and everyday cargo.
The dashboard and switchgear are neatly executed. The overall ambience balances comfort and functionality.

X3 offers Multiple powertrains:
The standard petrol variant uses a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine making about 190 hp and 310 Nm. It delivers balanced acceleration and refinement suited to everyday driving and highway cruising.
Diesel (20d xDrive)
The diesel unit produces around 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque, offering strong mid-range pull and effortless in-gear performance. Diesel refinement is good, with vibration and noise well controlled under most conditions.
30 xDrive Variant
A newly launched 30 xDrive petrol boosts outputs to around 258 hp and 400 Nm, making the X3 noticeably quicker and more responsive. This variant brings stronger performance while retaining the SUV’s overall composure.
All powertrains are paired with eight speed torque converter and xdrive awd system.

Official certified efficiency for the 2025 X3 variants ranges between about 13.38 kmpl and 17.86 kmpl in ARAI figures, depending on the engine and variant chosen.
Diesel variants tend to be towards the higher end of this range, given their torque characteristics and economy focus. The new 30 xDrive petrol, with its higher state of tune and larger wheels, may return slightly lower economy than the base petrol figures but still offers reasonable returns for a performance-capable midsize luxury SUV.

Ride comfort is a strength of the X3. Suspension absorbs urban potholes and undulations well, with minimal harshness transmitted to occupants. At higher speeds, the SUV feels stable and composed, with body control that remains poised on most surfaces.
Steering has good weight and directional clarity, aiding confidence in town and on highways. Handling is predictable and secure rather than sporty, reflecting the X3’s focus on all-round usability.

Equipment is strong for its class. A large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument panel, connected-car features, multi-zone climate control and premium audio are part of the offering. Safety kit includes multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, stability and traction control, parking sensors and camera systems.
Adaptive cruise control and driver-assistance systems add confidence on longer journeys, while comfort features such as panoramic roof and ventilated seats enhance daily usability.

Priced from around ₹71.2 lakh to over ₹86 lakh (ex-showroom India) depending on variant and specification, the X3 competes with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5.
Its blend of performance, refinement, space and technology makes it one of the more complete SUVs in its segment. The diesel offers strong torque and long-haul economy, the base petrol ensures refined everyday usability, and the 30 xDrive brings stronger performance when wanted. Overall, the X3 delivers a well-rounded package that suits both family and executive buyers.
