The Kia Sonet is the third model from Kia Motors India and arguably the most important. It enters the hotly contested compact SUV segment currently dominated by the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Sonet's own cousin, the Hyundai Venue. Other rivals include the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and Ford EcoSport. With three engines (two petrol, one diesel) and several gearboxes (manual, iMT, torque-converter auto, DCT) spread over a wide price range, buyers have a lot to choose from. The Kia Sonet also offers a long equipment list including various segment first or best features, like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, cooled front seats, ambient lighting, a Bose sound system, connected car tech and more.

Taking the winning formula of its bigger sibling, the Seltos, and condensing it into a smaller package is what makes the Kia Sonet a success. Not only does it share almost all of the same features, many hitherto unheard of at this price, it also shares its excellent 1.5 diesel engine, with either a manual or torque-converter auto gearbox. The diesel auto, in fact, is the best powertrain of the lot, offering a great mix of smoothness, fuel efficiency and torque and allowing the diminutive Sonet to drive like a larger, more premium car. The 1.0 turbo-petrol is still the enthusiast's choice, but is not offered with a manual gearbox; only an iMT or a DCT. All this does come at a price, however, and top-spec Sonets are priced into the higher segment. Moreover, like with the Hyundai Venue, the back seat isn't as spacious as what rivals offer, the ride can feel a bit choppy, and handling dynamics aren't engaging either. However, this, for now, still strikes the best balance among compact SUVs, and if you want a compact car that's loaded with features and can do just about everything you ask of it, the Sonet is our pick.

With its strong, refined 1.5-litre diesel engine and its ultra-smooth 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, the Sonet diesel automatic is the powertrain of choice. Yes, it can get pricey at the top end, so if you don't sacrificing a few fripperies, the mid-range HTK+ trim level does get you well more than the basics at a more digestible price.
