My father has been using a Yamaha SZ-R since 2011 and it’s now due for replacement. He is over 60, so I’m thinking of buying a 125cc bike for mixed use on both highways and rural roads. He doesn’t want a scooter. Please suggest a no-nonsense machine that will offer a comfortable ride for him and a pillion.

In the 125cc commuter bike segment, if you want a straightforward, simple machine, your best bet would be the Honda Shine. This is a machine that has proven its dependability over the many years. It has been on sale and will be reasonably comfortable for two-up riding, as well as return excellent fuel economy. You can also take a look at its more stylish sibling, the SP125. It is mechanically very similar but gets a few more features.

While you have said you want a simple, no-nonsense machine, the funky-looking TVS Raider is an option we would also strongly urge you to take a look at. It may look flashy, but as a commuter, it works extremely well and will serve you well.

The lower versions come with a single-piece seat, which will be slightly better for two-up riding. If you want the highest level of safety, then the top models come with single-channel ABS, which is a worthwhile feature to have.

Take your father for a test ride of these bikes and see which one suits him best before making a decision.

I am planning to buy a Bajaj Avenger as my current bike, the Platina, is nearing the end of its fitness certificate. I am looking for a bike with a low seat height that is comfortable for my mother, who is a senior citizen, to sit on, and also suitable for long rides. Please advise whether choosing the Bajaj Avenger is a good decision and suggest which variant would be best, considering comfort, low seat height, mileage, and overall economy.

For your specific needs, a straightforward 125/160cc commuter bike would be the best fit. If mileage is the absolute top priority, then going for something in the 125cc space like the Honda Shine, Hero Super Splendor / Glamour models will be advisable.

If you want something a little more powerful, then bikes like the Honda Unicorn / SP 160, Bajaj Pulsar N160 and TVS Apache RTR 160 4V single-seat variants are machines you should look at.

The Avenger will be able to do what you are looking for. But being a cruiser, its ergonomics are very laidback, and its suspension isn't the most comfortable either.

We would recommend taking a two-up test ride of each bike you consider before you make up your mind.

I am 33 years old and have been riding my father’s Passion Plus bike since I was 20. I travel around 120 km every day for work, and I’m looking for a bike that can handle long daily rides comfortably and reliably. I want a sporty-looking bike with good real-world mileage, low maintenance, and a durable body. I also prefer modern features and technology. Which bike would you recommend for my needs?

Since you haven't mentioned whether or not you want a bike in the same category or want to move up, we'll give you a broad spread of options to choose from.

In the 100cc commuter category, bikes like the Hero Splendor, HF Deluxe and Passion, Honda Shine 100 models and the Bajaj Platina 100 remain compelling propositions for their blend of frugality, comfort, dependability and low ownership costs.

If you want to move up to a 125cc bike, then the TVS Raider, Hero Xtreme 125R and Honda CB125 Hornet would be our recommendations. Since you've said you want a sporty look.

Take a test ride of these bikes before making a decision.

I want to exchange my 2018 HF Deluxe. I have shortlisted the Splendor Xtec Disc and the Glamour X. My running is approximately 1,000 km per month in the city. Please suggest which one I should buy. Thanks.

Since you haven't mentioned whether or not you want to step up from your current machine's performance ceiling and price bracket, it will be difficult to give you a clear-cut answer. The Hero MotoCorp Splendor Xtec (disc brake variant) will have many similarities to your HF Deluxe in terms of its performance, comfort, mileage, and overall riding experience. It is also going to be the more affordable option, but with a 100cc engine, its performance will be a clear step down from the Glamour.
On the other hand, the Hero MotoCorp Glamour X will be a far more feature-rich offering with better performance and will also feel like a more substantial bike. Of course, there will be some sacrifice in fuel economy, but that's the tradeoff with moving to a bigger machine.
If you value mileage above all else, then the Splendor is the better option, but if you want a bike that feels like a step up from your HF Deluxe, the Glamour X is the way to go.
You should also take a serious look at the Honda Shine 100 and Shine 125 models if you're shopping in this space. Take test rides of everything you shortlist before you decide.
