My budget is ₹7 lakh and I do not want a Maruti Suzuki. I am open to other car makers and also considering an EV. Which car should I choose?

Unfortunately, no EV is available within a budget of Rs 7 lakh. You will have to extend your budget by at least 1-1.50 lakh to purchase the entry-level MG Comet or Tata Tiago EV

The MG Comet is an excellent urban runabout, due to its tiny footprint, which makes it easy to manoeuvre and park. Occasionally, it can seat four passengers in relative comfort, with the only limiting factor being access to its rear seats due to its two-door layout. The Tata Tiago EV is relatively more conventional in its approach, and it drives a bit better than the Comet. 

Also, it is the Tata Tiago EV, which will feel a bit more comfortable and confident for the occasional highway drives. Hence, if this is going to be your primary vehicle, we'd recommend the Tata Tiago EV for its well-roundedness.

Hi, I’m looking for an entry-level EV for my daily office commute of about 120 km per day. My options are the Tata Tiago EV and Punch EV. Is there any update expected for the Tiago EV in the near future, or do you have any other suggestions?

Tata Punch EV is a better option for your usage. In our real-world range test, Punch EV Long Range delivered 229km with an efficiency of 6.54km/kWh. As you travel around 120 km a day, Punch EV LR will offer you more and a hassle-free ownership experience.
Tata Tiago EV has a real-world range of around 187 km (as tested by us), which is manageable, but will always be borderline for your usage. Punch EV's cabin is also more spacious and can carry more luggage compared to the Tiago EV. So, unless you are on a budget, you should go for the Tata Punch EV LR.

Hi, I am planning to buy an automatic car for my dad. He wants a small car that is easy to drive and park in Chennai traffic. I am considering the MG Comet. Is it a good option?

The MG Comet is a wonderful city runabout thanks to its small footprint, light steering and tight turning circle, good visibility, as well as smooth and adequately zippy electric motor. What's more is that it is surprisingly spacious to ferry 4 adults, should the need arise.
Moreover, with just two occupants on board, it also makes for an excellent car for the airport run (by folding the rear seats), as it can accommodate four large suitcases with ease. Yes, its ride comfort or audio system isn't as good as the Tata Tiago EV's, which is available at a similar price. But purely looking at it from a convenience and ease-of-use point of view, this MG car is an excellent secondary car.

Should I buy the Tiago EV or the Tiago automatic CNG? Which is the better option?

If you have frequent highway runs, the CNG Tata Tiago would be a good choice. In addition to the CNG tanks, the car also has its petrol tank, so your driving range and fuel flexibility are very good.
If your usage is primarily within the city, the Tiago EV makes more sense. The car is very silent and without a gear box is a very smooth and easy drive in the city. Moreover, you won't have to wait in long CNG lines, which are still an issue in some places. However, make sure you can charge at home or your place of work, as relying on a public charger is not feasible.

I own a 2018 Maruti Celerio ZXI+ Opt, which has clocked 74,000 km. I am looking to replace it with an EV. Most of my running is in the city, with occasional outstation trips to Ahmednagar or Mumbai once every 3-4 months. I am confused between the Tata Tiago EV and the Punch EV. My budget is ₹10 lakh. Can you advise which is the better choice and which variant to consider? My main priorities are safety and comfort.

 If you drive mostly in the city, you can go for the Tata Tiago EV. It fits in your budget, is generously equipped, and is built specifically for the daily city drive. The Long Range version gets a 24kWh battery paired with a 75hp electric motor, with a claimed range of 315km. 

In real-world testing, Autocar India recorded an average range of around 187km, which is adequate for everyday city use, especially if you can charge the car overnight at home. Occasional short intercity trips can also be managed with some basic planning.

I am a first-time driver planning to buy an MG Comet for city use. Are there any other small automatic/electric vehicles that would be better than the Comet?

The MG Comet is a good option for a first-time driver. It is easy to drive, has a spacious cabin, despite being a two-door, and the electric powertrain is smooth and silent enough.

However, the 2-doors mean the Comet is not the most practical option in its segment, the boot is small, and the small tyres mean the ride can get choppy. If this is important to you, you could consider the Tata Tiago EV. Otherwise the Comet will do just fine.

I currently own a Maruti Dzire and drive about 80-100 km daily, mostly solo. I don’t want a large car but need good mileage and an automatic (or auto-shifting) transmission regardless of fuel type. I’m considering exchanging my Dzire for a Tiago EV. Should I go ahead with the Tiago EV?

If you are open to an EV and have easy access to charging facilities at home or your place of work, we would suggest you go ahead with one. Your daily running isn't very high, and the Tiago EV should easily manage this on a single charge. 

By opting for the Tata Tiago EV, you will also meet your requirements of low running costs and an automatic gearbox. In fact, with most EVs, the absence of a traditional gearbox means there are no shifts at all, leaving you with a very smooth and relaxed drive feel.

On the other hand, most petrol and diesel automatics at this price segment use an automated manual transmission (AMT), which is not a smooth shifter at all. Thus, the Tiago EV would do you well.

I am looking to buy a second small car for Mumbai city for my wife. She is a new driver and will use it mainly for local commuting with my child. I want an automatic. My budget is up to Rs 10 lakh, and I am looking for something very compact and practical. I liked the MG Comet, but found it very overpriced and could not find any substitute for it. I also considered the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, but could not get over the looks of the Comet. Any suggestions would be helpful.

An electric car, especially the MG Comet, is a great option for Mumbai, especially considering your wife will only drive it in the city, and with only your child as a passenger. Its biggest advantage is its ultra-compact size, which makes it incredibly manoeuvrable and easy to park in the smallest of spaces. Plus, it has light controls and plenty of pep, and is surprisingly spacious for its tiny size.
Do note, however, that the range from the small battery is not great, and it is best to have a charger installed at home. If you can get past its unconventional look, the MG Comet is in many ways the ideal city car.
However, if you want something more conventional, the Tata Tiago EV is available at a slightly higher price.

Hi, I would like your advice based on my usage. I want to upgrade my garage to two city cars and one highway car. My current city car is a Swift diesel AMT with a usage of 1,200 km per month, and my highway car is a Kia Seltos with a usage of 1,000 km per month. I now want to replace both cars and get two EVs for city use, namely the Tiago EV and the Sierra EV. For highway use, I am looking at the BMW M340i because it has adaptive suspension. Do you think it is comfortable for long highway journeys? Please suggest suitable cars for my usage.

The Tiago EV is a sensible, affordable city runabout that works very well for errands and short urban commutes, and that’s exactly how we would recommend you use it. The Tata Sierra EV, meanwhile, is still some time away – launch is expected in 2026 – but on paper it promises a strong combination of space, range and features, and should be priced competitively when it arrives. However, it’s too early to comment on how it will drive as we haven’t driven the production car yet.​
The BMW M340i is a very quick, engaging sports sedan that can double up as a daily driver, and the adaptive suspension has definitely improved its usability. That said, it still feels a bit firm and always “on its toes”, so it isn’t the most relaxed choice if you prioritise long, laid-back highway cruising.
One of our favourite sporty everyday sedans in this space is the Audi S5; it offers strong performance but with a more compliant ride and more easy-going manners, so it’s worth considering as your highway car.

I’m planning to buy a new car for my wife. She currently uses a 2019 Celerio automatic and drives about 30 km daily (≈600 km monthly). I’m looking for an automatic around ₹10 lakh and am torn between the Fronx and the Tiago EV. I plan to use the car for 10 years - would the Tiago EV be a good option? Please advise.

The Tata Tiago EV is a very competent electric car, and being an electric, it will make for a seamless and silent drive experience, no other petrol car can match. Also, being smaller in dimensions, the Tiago EV will be a touch easier to drive and park compared to a Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Also, it has a better sound system and touchscreen, which your wife may appreciate. If you can arrange for home charging, go for the Tata Tiago EV.
