MG Comet EV vs Tata Tiago EV vs Citroen eC3

MG recently launched its Comet EV in India and will open bookings on May 15. Since the introduction of the Tata Tiago EV, electric vehicles are gaining popularity in the budget end of the market, with Citroen also vying for a piece of the pie with its eC3. Interested customers now have three options to choose from and we compare them to see how they fare against each other on paper.

The MG Comet EV measures 2,794mm in length, 1,505mm in width, 1,640mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,010mm. This makes the Comet EV the shortest vehicle amongst the bunch as the Tiago EV and the eC3 are longer than it by 975mm and 1,187mm, respectively. Coming to width, the Comet EV is the narrowest as the Tiago EV and the eC3 are wider than it by 172mm and 228mm, respectively. When it comes to height, it is the Comet EV that comes out on top as it is taller than the Tiago EV and eC3 by 104mm and 36mm, respectively.

As for the wheelbase, the Comet EV, at 2,010mm, is considerably shorter than the Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3 by 390mm and 530mm, respectively. Not only does the Comet EV have the smallest wheel size amongst the trio, riding on 12-inch wheels, but it also is the lightest as it weighs 501kg and 340kg less than the eC3 and Tiago EV, respectively. It's the boot space where the eC3 and Tiago EV have a clear advantage as the Comet barely has any storage space, with the rear seats having to be folded down to make for more room.

Both the Comet and eC3 come with only one powertrain option, whereas the Tiago EV comes with two which are classified as Medium Range and Long Range. All three EVs use permanent magnet synchronous motors, but it's the Comet EV that makes the least output amongst the trio. Compared to the eC3 and the Comet EV, however, the Tiago EV Long Range is the most powerful as it puts out 75hp.

When it comes to torque, the eC3 has the highest output figure here, at 143Nm, which is 29Nm more than the Tiago EV Long Range's 114Nm. Interestingly, the Comet EV’s torque figure is the same as the Medium Range Tiago EV. It remains to be seen how fast the Comet EV accelerates as MG has not given a claimed 0-60kph time. Despite making more torque, the eC3 has a 0.6-second slower 0-60kph time (claimed) than even the Tiago EV Medium Range.

Even though it has the smallest battery size at 17.3kWh, the Comet EV has a claimed range of 230km, which is 20km less than the Tiago EV Medium Range. The eC3’s 29.2kWh battery pack is the largest amongst the trio and offers the most range, 320km as per the MIDC cycle. Meanwhile, the larger 24kWh battery in the Tiago EV Long Range can do 315km on the MIDC cycle.

Except for the Comet EV, the eC3 and the Medium and Long Range versions of the Tiago EV can be charged in a claimed 57 minutes via a DC fast charger. However, while charging via a 3.3kW AC charger, the Comet EV is just marginally slower from 10-100 percent than the Tiago EV Medium Range. Meanwhile, the Long Range version sits right in the middle as it can charge from 10-100 percent in 8 hours 40 minutes. However, it is the eC3 which is the slowest to charge from 0-100 percent, taking 10 hours and 30 minutes.

Tata Motors also offers an optional 7.2kW AC fast charger for both the Medium and Long Range versions of the Tiago EV allowing it to charge from 10-100 percent in 2 hours 36 minutes and 3 hours and 36 minutes, respectively.
