My father is currently using a 2016 Maruti Swift. In 10 years, he has driven only 60,000 km. We are just planning to upgrade. The car will be driven 80% in the city & 20% on the highways. We prefer Indian or German brands, as we want a solidly built car this time (no Korean or Japanese models). So please suggest a car under an 8 lakh budget. Preference SUV petrol MT.

The Tata Punch is your best bet. It feels tough, ride comfort is good, and highway stability is impressive, too. On the whole, it is a practical and user-friendly sub-compact SUV. The only downside is its petrol engine, which feels a bit lacklustre.

I want to buy a new car and am considering the Tata Punch, but I am concerned about its engine reliability. I want a car that I can keep for the long term.

Tata Motors doesn't have the best reputation for reliability, so we understand your concerns about the Punch. However, with regard to your specific concern on the engine, Tata Motors’ 1.2, three-cylinder engine that powers the Punch has been around for quite some time now in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged form and is quite a proven unit with no major issues.
What you are likely to face is a few niggling issues as the car ages and a service network that needs to improve. However, the new feature Punch has been launched at a very attractive price and is certainly a compelling option to consider and buy.

I want to buy a new car within ₹12-13 lakh that offers high fuel efficiency and an automatic transmission. I am open to CNG or hybrid options.

In this budget, there are no strong hybrids available. You can instead go for a CNG car. The car that will fulfil your requirements is the Tata Punch, the Accomplished + S CNG AMT variant.
This Tata car is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, sunroof, cruise control and many desirable features. The CNG power output is 73.4hp, which is sufficient for city driving. The Punch also sports a fresh look with the recent update. It will not give the most enthusiastic drive but will offer great efficiency with the convenience of automatic.

I am a senior citizen aged 68 years and drive no more than 500km per month. My wife has back pain and finds it uncomfortable to travel in our Grand i10. I am looking for a car or compact SUV with better ground clearance. My budget is ₹10-14 lakh. Please suggest a suitable option.

The Tata Punch, which has recently been given a thorough update, is a good option to consider. It has a high seating position, great outward visibility and a relatively spacious cabin, while being compact and easy to manage in traffic. The high-set seats will also make getting in and out much easier for your wife. The ride quality is also good, and the Punch is comfortable over bad roads, with excellent ground clearance.
The Punch is available with a CNG option, which will further reduce your running costs, or even a new turbocharged petrol engine, but given your limited usage, perhaps the standard petrol version will suffice. If you want further convenience, this Tata car can also be had with an AMT automatic gearbox option.

Let me know any automatic, preferably multi-fuel small SUV under ₹10 lakh.

Your two options in this price range are the recently facelifted Tata Punch and the Hyundai Exter. Both these sub-compact SUVs are available with petrol and CNG options.

The Exter has a smoother powertrain and slightly more interior space. But the Punch feels tougher, is more comfortable, is better equipped and has scored a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating.

Moreover, the Punch CNG is available with both manual and AMT automatic gearbox options, and across more variants, which gives you more choice.

Hi Autocar, I’m planning to buy a car for my parents. They are new to driving and nearly 60 years old. My budget is ₹6-10 lakh, and I’m open to both new and second-hand car suggestions. I prefer an automatic transmission. Please advise suitable options.

If you are buying a new car, the recently updated Tata Punch would be a good choice. With its taller height and wide opening doors, entry and exit are very easy. The elevated seating position also gives you a good view outside, and that, along with the car's compact size, makes it quite easy to drive.

If you are looking to buy a used car, you can check out a Maruti Baleno. The car sits lower than the Punch, but it's also easy to drive with light controls and look for pre-2022 cars with the CVT gearbox. It is much smoother than an AMT autobox, which the Punch and Baleno now come with. When buying a used car, purchase it from a reputable reseller like Spinny.

I’m 6 ft tall and want to buy a new car. My daily city ride is almost 50 km. I’m planning for a Wagon R, considering its low ground clearance and safety standards. I’m exploring other options. Is there a car that offers great seat height (like the Wagon R) and good ground clearance? Please advise. Thank you.

We would suggest you have a look at the Tata Punch. With its tall stance, the car has good headroom and will meet your requirement of good ground clearance, which stands at 193mm unladen. It will also meet your safety requirements, as the car is well-equipped with six airbags and ESP as standard across all variants.

Tata Motors also says the Punch will secure a 5-star BNCAP crash rating. Since you run daily, running is high, and you are in the city, you could consider the CNG automatic version.

I am a 5'7.5" mid sized 50 years old woman. I need a car that's easy to get in and out of and also has an automatic gear shift. My budget is around 6-7Lakh.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will suit your requirements of an automatic car that's easy to get in and out of and below Rs 7 lakh. The car is also easy to drive with light controls. It is, however, a bit old now, and if you would like something newer and more exciting, you could look at the newly launched Tata Punch. The car's taller height allows for easy entry and egress, along with doors that open to a full 90 degrees. It will require you to stretch your Rs 7 lakh budget, though.

Asked by: Dilip Khambeteon Jan 7, 2026

I want to buy a new car. It should be a small car, with a monthly running of up to 150km, mostly for city driving. I earlier owned a Maruti 800, but since my height is 6ft 2in, it was uncomfortable to sit and drive, so I sold it long ago. Budget is not a constraint. Please suggest a good value-for-money option.

It will be better if you go for an SUV; even small SUVs will give you better headroom. In the small car segment, you can look at the Tata Punch, which has wide-opening doors, making ingress and egress easier, good headroom, and an adjustable headrest can also add to your comfort.
This Tata car also gets a spacious cabin, lots of features, a 5-star safety rating, and is widely popular, so you get better resale value, too.

Asked by: Suresh Swetharanyamon Jan 7, 2026

I am currently using a Hyundai Venue (2019) and will be retiring by April. My car usage will be limited after retirement, mainly on weekends and for two long trips in a year. I am planning to buy a CNG car with a budget of around ₹10 lakh. Since I have been driving a manual car for over 15 years, should I continue with a CNG manual or opt for a CNG AMT, considering my age? Please suggest which option would be better.

You would have far more options opting for a manual gearbox with a CNG engine. Since you are used to a manual, this should be fine, and we would suggest you look at the Hyundai Exter or the Tata Punch.
Both have the dual tank CNG option, which sits below the boot floor, thus leaving you with enough boot space, and both cars offer you a slightly elevated seating position and an easy entry and exit.
If, however, you would like to opt for an automatic, an AMT - which is the only type of automatic available with CNG - will not be a very smooth gearbox as far as automatics go, but in heavy traffic conditions would still be better than a manual. In this case, look at the Tata Tiago, which also has the dual CNG tank advantage.
