Let me know any automatic, preferably multi-fuel small SUV under ₹10 lakh.

Your two options in this price range are the recently facelifted Tata Punch and the Hyundai Exter. Both these sub-compact SUVs are available with petrol and CNG options.

The Exter has a smoother powertrain and slightly more interior space. But the Punch feels tougher, is more comfortable, is better equipped and has scored a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating.

Moreover, the Punch CNG is available with both manual and AMT automatic gearbox options, and across more variants, which gives you more choice.

I currently own a 2019 Baleno and am planning to buy a new car. I have shortlisted the new Seltos, but I am not sure about the variant. I am contemplating between NA CVT and Turbo DCT. I am unsure if NA will be underpowered, and I am also worried about the maintenance issues often associated with DCTs. My 90% driving is in city traffic with occasional highway runs.

The new Kia Seltos will be a substantial upgrade from your Baleno, and considering you will be using it 90% in the city, it's best to stick with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and the CVT gearbox. Despite the Seltos having grown considerably with the new generation, the 116hp and 250 Nm are more than enough to propel the SUV along smoothly, with enough pep for overtaking on the highway. Moreover, this is the smoother powertrain by far, which is beneficial in your bumper-to-bumper driving conditions. The 1.5 turbo-petrol with the 7-speed DCT is no doubt the more exciting powertrain, but it's nowhere near as smooth at low speeds - turbo lag combined with some shift clunkiness can become annoying after a while. Plus, it isn't as fuel-efficient as the 1.5 CVT either.

I am 67 years old and currently drive a Maruti Alto LXi, which returns 13 kmpl. I want to upgrade to a car you would suggest. My usage is mostly city driving, around 1,200 km per month. My budget is ₹8 lakh. Please advise.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio will be a good upgrade from your Alto LXi. It remains compact, and thanks to its tall-boy design, getting in and out is easy, and it offers a great view from the driver's or passengers' seats. Its 1.0-litre K10 petrol engine is proven as a reliable and fuel-efficient powertrain, and you should continue to get excellent mileage from it.What's more, you can even get an AMT automatic in your budget, if you want a bit more convenience. If you want something more upmarket, consider the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. It's more powerful, efficient, and offers more space, practicality and comfort. You might, however, have to stretch your budget slightly if you want more features.

I am planning to take the new kia seltos HTX A variant, I will use this in 50:50 % in city and highways, which transmission is better IVT or DCT?

Choosing the right petrol transmission when buying the new Kia Seltos depends on what you want. If you are looking for performance then without doubt go for the turbo petrol variant as it packs more punch and on open roads this extra performance will translate to more fun and effortless performance. On the downside fuel efficiency will be on the lower side and in city driving it will not feel as smooth as the 1.5 naturally aspirated engine. The 1.5 litre IVT on the other hand feels much better than what the spec sheet suggests. It is creamy smooth to drive in the city thanks to the naturally aspirated engine’s smooth power delivery and the seamless CVT transmission and in fact even on the highway it has enough power to cruise or make overtakes. So as I said it depends on what you are looking for. If you want a smooth, more fuel efficient commuter then the 1.5 NA IVT would do just fine or if you want that extra performance then go for the turbo petrol DCT.

Planning to upgrade from Kwid. My budget is max 15L. Occassionally go for outstation. Monthly commute is less than 1000 km. For 4 members family with grown up kids please suggest reliable and performance oriented to keep next 10 years. In Future planning to go outstations also...every 3 months.

Considering you plan to keep the car for a long time and want something that is both performance oriented and a good family car, we’d suggest the new Hyundai Venue.Since you’re based in Bangalore, the 1.0 litre turbo petrol with the DCT automatic makes the most sense. Within your budget, you should be able to consider the H8 variant, which is well equipped and feels premium. The turbo petrol engine gives the Venue effortless performance, and the DCT gearbox manages both city traffic and occasional highway drives well. The new Venue is also larger than the older model, and it offers enough space for four adults to travel comfortably. Importantly, this engine and gearbox combination has been in use for several years in Hyundai cars, so it is a proven and reliable powertrain. If you want even more space than the Venue, you can also look at the Kia Syros. It is roomier on the inside, similarly priced, and gets the same turbo petrol DCT combination. The only caveat is that the ride quality of the Syros isn’t as comfortable as the Venue.
