With your driving style, which is largely highway, Tata Nexon Diesel AMT makes better sense. It delivers good mileage, the engine performance is impressive and the ride quality on highway speeds is among the best in the segment. In our real world mileage test, the manual returned an efficiency of over 19 kpl on highway, and with AMT, you can expect a figure close to that.

The Nexon is also well-equipped, featuring a 10-inch infotainment screen, voice commands, wireless phone charging, a sunroof, and more, giving you a feature-rich package. However you must know, the Nexon AMT is not the smoothest and and NVH levels in the diesel Nexon are on the higher side.

I’m planning to replace my current car and would appreciate some expert advice. I currently drive a Maruti Suzuki Ritz, and in the past 10 years I have driven only about 65,000 km, so my usage is quite low. I mostly use the car occasionally on weekends and for highway trips, not for daily commuting. My main reasons for upgrading are better safety and more comfort. I live in Bengaluru, so city traffic and parking are also factors to consider. I am currently confused between two options: Tata Nexon top-end variant with DCA (automatic so wife can use) Tata Sierra mid variant (likely Pure Plus) manual due to budget constraints.

After the EV, the turbo-petrol-DCA is the second-best iteration in the Nexon range. The drive experience is smooth and gearbox is seamless, although it is not the most refined in the segment. Of course, being a sub-4-metre car, manoeuvring it in town or parking in tight spots will be easier than a Sierra, and like you've mentioned, opting for an automatic comes with added convenience. Tata has done well to update the Nexon's interiors with modern features and tech, so even though it is an old platform, it is still up-to-speed with times. If you like the Nexon DCA, go for it - it'll be a good upgrade from your outgoing Maruti Ritz.

If you are satisfied with the Tata experience, you could consider the Tata Sierra. As your usage is on the higher side and you already use a diesel Nexon, we would recommend going for the 1.5-litre diesel with the six-speed torque converter automatic. The Sierra is roomier than the Nexon and offers the comfortable seating you are looking for, yet it isn’t so large as to become a chore on your long city commute. The diesel engine is grunty for both city and highway use, and the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly. The ride and handling balance is also excellent, making it a very enjoyable SUV to drive.A mid-spec Adventure+ comes with all the necessities, along with features like a panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree camera. Importantly, it also gets a reclining rear seat and a thigh-support extension for the front seats, both of which improve seating comfort. Do take a test drive before committing to buying.

I'm looking for a Diesel automatic car with 40% city and 60% Highway driving, with around 1500kms per month with a budget between 12 to 15 lakhs. Please suggest a good vehicle. Used or new vehicle is considered.

There are quite a few diesel options within your budget, especially from the compact SUV segment. The list of contenders includes the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Tata Nexon. Which one suits you best depends on your key requirements. The Hyundai Venue is a great all-rounder offering good refinement, new-age features, reasonable rear seat space and a large boot. The Kia Sonet has many of the same strengths but loses out on rear seat space. If cabin space is a key requirement, the Kia Syros is the ideal pick. It's the roomiest compact SUV and cabin quality is also very good. However, the design is not to everyone's liking. The Mahindra XUV 3X0 has a good engine, feels tough and offers enough space for three to sit in comfort at the back. Boot space isn't as generous as the others, though. Tata's Nexon diesel feels peppy and the suspension is well suited to our bad roads but the package isn't as refined or polished as alternatives. If it's an automatic transmission you're keen on, the Hyundai and Kia are the one's to consider. Their torque converter automatic transmissions work superbly with the 1.5-litre diesel engines to deliver a truly upmarket experience. The Sonet diesel-AT in HTX trim is great value. You could also get diesel versions of the Hyundai Creta, Tata Sierra or Kia Seltos for the same money. While these options are more spacious, you will have to settle for a low-spec trim without many features.
