Hyundai recorded a 2.3 percent decline, while Mahindra and Tata posted growth of 20 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

For a long time, the number one spot on car sales chart in India, financial year or otherwise, has been occupied by Maruti Suzuki. Hyundai has been a close second, holding on to the penultimate spot for several years. This streak changed as the Korean carmaker noticed a drop in sales in 2025, with homegrown brands Mahindra and Tata rising quickly to take up the second and third spots. That said, how do the numbers stack up for FY2026?

1. Maruti Suzuki FY2026 sales – 24,22,713 units

Maruti’s expansive portfolio helps it maintain the top spot

Maruti Suzuki sold 24,22,713 units in FY2026, compared to 22,34,266 units in FY2025, which is an 8 percent uptick in overall volume. With a diverse product line-up that consists of small cars (Wagon R, Swift, etc.) and SUVs (Brezza, Grand Vitara, etc.) spanning several categories and price brackets, the brand manages to serve a wide variety of customers. Then there was GST 2.0, which helped Maruti by making its smaller cars even more affordable – all of these factors together explain the brand’s ability to maintain the number one spot.

2. Mahindra FY2026 sales – 6,60,276 units

An aggressive product strategy is a key driver behind Mahindra’s volumes

Unlike other brands on this list, Mahindra’s SUV-heavy portfolio helps drive sales by keeping buyers’ selections fairly straightforward. This is one of the reasons that explains how the homegrown automaker was able to sell 6,60,276 units in FY2026, which is 20 percent more than what it managed in FY2025 with 5,51,487 units. Mahindra has also been aggressive with its product strategy, bringing to market modern EVs like the BE 6 and BE 9e that quickly found buyers. It also kept its combustion-powered line-up updated with the likes of the XUV 7XO, while the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N have been top-sellers.

3. Tata FY2026 sales – 6,41,587 units

Tata’s relatively diverse and modern line-up helped drive numbers

Tata Motors has a line-up that covers hatchbacks and SUVs, but is especially helped by numbers posted by the Punch and Nexon. As FY2026 came to a close, Tata posted a total sales volume of 6,41,587 units. Compared to its sales of 5,56,263 units in FY2025, the homegrown brand saw a growth of 14 percent. Just like Mahindra, Tata’s EV line-up also helped it drive volumes, albeit not as convincingly this time around.

4. Hyundai FY2026 sales – 5,84,906 units

The Creta has been the Korean brand’s sales champion

With its total sales in FY2026 standing at 5,84,906 units, Hyundai posted a decline of 2.3 percent. For reference, the Korean carmaker sold 5,98,666 units in FY2025. There is no denying that the combustion-powered Creta has been a top-selling model for Hyundai, accompanied by subcompact and compact SUVs like the Exter and Venue, respectively. To an extent, the fleet-only versions of the Grand i10 Nios hatchback and Aura sedan are likely to have contributed to Hyundai’s overall sales as well.

5. Toyota FY2026 sales – 4,06,081 units

The Japanese marque has maintained its position quite consistently

Coming in at number 5 on this list is Toyota, accounting for 4,06,081 units sold in FY2026. Similar to Mahindra, Toyota posted growth of 20 percent when compared to its performance in FY2025, when it sold 3,37,148 units. Given its tie-up with Maruti, which resulted in models like the Glanza and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota is bound to reap the benefits of shared costs and product synergy. The Japanese automaker also has the likes of the Fortuner and Innova Hycross of its own, both of which find takers consistently.
