I want to buy a family SUV from Volkswagen, Skoda, or Toyota, preferably with good mileage, with a budget of around Rs 12 lakh. This will be my first new car, and I have very little driving experience so far. Please suggest.

Pick the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor S+ Petrol MT. It sits under your Rs. 12 lakh budget, is fuel efficient, and its easy, no-fuss nature suits low usage and first-time ownership. The simple 1.2 engine is reliable, cheap to maintain and efficient in the city, and the higher seating with good ground clearance makes it family-friendly without feeling big or heavy to drive. It is also easier on the wallet and comes backed by Toyota's widespread service network. The only catch is that it is not as powerful or as solid-feeling as a Skoda Kylaq, which is the alternative you should consider. The Kylaq is more enjoyable to drive, and it comes with a 5-star crash safety rating, but it won't be as fuel efficient or as affordable to maintain as the Toyota Taisor. For your budget and light running, though, the Taisor is the smart pick.

I am looking to buy a new car with comfortable seating for five adults, along with good fuel efficiency and a peppy driving experience for easy overtakes in city traffic. My budget is strictly between ₹11-12.5 lakh on-road. I am also eligible for a BH registration, which should help reduce the upfront purchase cost. My priorities are: Mileage and engine performance Comfortable space for five adults Good build quality and satisfactory after-sales service experience Could you please suggest the best options for my requirements?

The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a strong fit for your requirements, especially considering what you currently drive. Coming from a Ford Aspire diesel that has delivered a great mix of performance, practicality and long-distance usability, you will likely appreciate the 3XO’s punchy turbo petrol engine, genuinely spacious cabin and strong overtaking performance in city conditions. It is one of the better compact SUVs if rear seat space for five adults matters. The one caveat is fuel efficiency. The 1.2 turbo petrol is strong and enjoyable, but it is not the most efficient engine in this space if mileage is your absolute top priority. That is where the Maruti Fronx turbo petrol or Toyota Taisor turbo petrol deserve serious consideration. Both use a punchy, refined turbo petrol engine that feels surprisingly eager in daily driving while also being noticeably more efficient than the Mahindra in real-world use. Service support and long-term ownership peace of mind are also likely to be stronger here. The trade-off is space. While the Fronx and Taisor are reasonably spacious, they are not as convincing as genuine five-seaters compared to the XUV 3XO, especially if you regularly carry three adults in the rear.

I have a budget of ₹11 lakh and am looking to buy a car for a family of four, including a child. I have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXi (non-smart hybrid), Hyundai Venue SX (O), Hyundai Exter automatic, and am also considering options like the Nissan Magnite or Tata Punch. My priorities include long-term ownership (10-15 years), a reliable engine with low maintenance and running costs, good safety, and fuel efficiency in Bangalore traffic as well as on long drives, including ghat sections. I also want good rear-seat comfort over bad roads and highways, strong pulling power with a full load on slight inclines, essential features, a good interior, and a quality music system. Which option would you recommend based on these requirements?

For your requirements of a 5-member family, long-term ownership, low maintenance and good all-round ability, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXi manual is the best fit among your shortlist. It offers the most space here, especially at the rear, which makes it more comfortable for three passengers. The suspension handles bad roads and potholes well, and the overall ride is well-suited for both city use and highway trips, including ghat sections. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is simple, proven and reliable, which is important if you are planning to keep the car for 10-15 years. It also pulls well with a full load on slight inclines, which matches your requirement. Maruti’s wide service network and lower maintenance costs further add to long-term peace of mind. The main compromise is that the VXi variant misses out on some features, including a better music system, and compared to smaller engines, fuel efficiency in heavy city traffic may not be the best, though it remains reasonable overall. The Hyundai Venue and Hyundai Exter are easy to drive, but both feel smaller inside and are not as strong on hills with a full load due to their smaller 1.2-litre engines. You can also look at the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Taisor turbo manual as options. The 1.0-litre turbo engine is more punchy than the Brezza’s engine and, despite being a small 3-cylinder unit, it has very little turbo lag and is fairly refined. Both cars are spacious, have good ride quality and offer a bigger boot than the Brezza. The only downside is that while the rear seat is spacious, it does not feel as wide as the Brezza. So overall, for a balance of space, comfort, reliability and long-term ownership, the Brezza VXi is the most sensible choice.

My budget is around ₹10.5 lakh (± ₹50,000). My monthly running is approximately 400 km, and I prefer a petrol car with a city mileage of around 11-14 km/l. I have analysed the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, and Toyota Taisor. I am also expecting good resale value. Please suggest the best option.

Of your shortlisted cars, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx (or its equivalent, the Toyota Taisor) makes the most sense. In your budget of Rs 10-11 lakh, you get a choice of a 1.2-litre petrol engine or a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. While the 1.2 is more than sufficient, we would recommend the Turbo for its additional pep, with little penalty to mileage and running costs. Unless driven with an overly heavy foot, it should easily meet your target of 11-14kpl. Maruti vehicles are also great when it comes to resale value, with some of the best long-term residual values on the market. The next best bet is the Hyundai Venue, which is more spacious and comfortable, but it won't be as good as the Maruti when it comes to mileage or resale value.

I am planning to buy a new car and am currently waiting for the new Honda WR-V to be launched. Could you please advise on its expected launch timeline? Also, if there are any good alternatives to the WR-V that meet my requirements, kindly suggest them. My key requirements are: A responsive automatic gearbox Comfortable seats and good ride quality for long drives Good ground clearance Decent mileage

Honda has no plans to launch the WR-V in India, at least not in its current avatar. If a new sub-four-metre SUV is launched, it won't be before 2029, with several other products planned before then, such as the 0 Alpha EV, a new Honda City, a new 7-seat SUV and a new Elevate, as well as some CBUs.Until then, check out the Maruti Suzuki Fronx (or its sibling, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor), specifically with the 1.0 Boosterjet turbo petrol engine and 6-speed AT gearbox. This powertrain delivers, at once, performance, smoothness and efficiency, giving the best of all worlds. The Fronx is a sharp-looking compact crossover that's surprisingly practical and well equipped. It's got good ground clearance and a comfortable ride, and space is more than enough too. Plus, being a Maruti, running costs are low, and reliability is rock solid.
