I currently own a 2016 Ford Figo diesel manual with around 62,000 km on the odometer. My annual usage is about 8,000-10,000 km, mostly in bumper-to-bumper Mumbai traffic, with occasional highway trips two to three times a year. Given the traffic conditions, I am considering switching to an automatic. However, after test-driving a few petrol cars, I felt they lacked the torque and handling I am accustomed to in the Figo. Should I retain my current car for a few more years or upgrade to a new one? If upgrading, please suggest an SUV that offers strong performance with decent mileage.

If you are happy with the Ford Figo and it is running fine, you could hold on to it, however it will get progressively difficult to maintain it. Thus, if you can change it might be a good idea to do so now.

Consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx / Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor. The car will feel similar in its fun-to-drive character to your Figo, and you could opt for either the turbo or the naturally aspirated engine.

The 1.0 litre turbo will be more peppy and fun to drive but given that turbo's are very sensitive to driving style, you will likely see real world efficiency figures than quote. In this regard, the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine will be better, though at a lower performance level.

Test drive the two and see which you prefer.

Please suggest automatic cars within a budget of 13-14 lakh. My daily running is about 10-12 km, with occasional longer weekend drives (once a month) around the city. Fuel economy and maintenance reliability are important to me. Should I consider a hybrid or an electric vehicle given my usage?

Given your limited running, a hybrid or an EV will not make the most financial sense.

We’d suggest you consider a petrol-automatic. There are many options in your budget, though the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor Turbo are the ones that will best meet your requirements of good economy, low maintenance and reliability.

The Brezza is an upright compact SUV and has the roomiest interior of the options. Its 1.5-litre engine, however, is pleasant but unexciting.

The Fronx and Taisor are essentially the same car. Both are best with the turbo-petrol engine and automatic gearbox option. Performance is impressive, and fuel economy is also good.

I currently drive a 2014 WagonR for a daily office commute of about 30 km and plan to upgrade. My budget is ₹10-11 lakh on-road. My priorities are driving comfort, fuel efficiency, and hassle-free ownership, similar to Maruti; I’m also open to EVs. Please suggest some suitable options.

If you want good mileage, comfort and hassle-free ownership, two options that you can consider are - Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor S+ or Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta+
Taisor is the rebadged version of Fronx. Both options should comfortably fit in your Rs 11 lakh on-road budget, depending on your city. You can expect roughly 13 kpl in the city, and around 18.8 kpl on the highway with the AMT and about 20 kpl with the manual in real-world highway use (Autocar India tested figures).

Both cars offer comfortable seats and a comfortable ride, well-tuned for Indian roads and city usage, making them ideal for daily commuting. Maruti has already proven its hassle-free ownership experience to you, while Toyota is also known for reliability and smooth ownership.

Between the two, you can pick based on which design, brand and feature mix you prefer, but either will tick your key boxes of comfort, mileage and peace of mind.

I have a budget of around ₹10 lakh and drive about 700 km per month, plus two return trips a year of about 1,200 km each. I currently own a 2012 Honda Brio and have test-driven the Mahindra 3XO, Kia Sonet, Maruti Baleno, Maruti Fronx, and Toyota Taisor. I’m inclined toward the Taisor — which of these would you recommend for mileage, comfort, and safety?

If you like the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor then you should definitely go for it as it's a well-sorted car.

The Taisor has a spacious and comfy cabin, and it comes with 6 airbags as standard. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is frugal too. Toyota Taisor mileage with the manual gearbox is 21.71kpl and a higher 22.79kpl with the AMT automatic (claimed).

I’ve driven 1,25,000 km in 9 years. My Figo (1.2 TI-VCT) has never let me down in any situation. Although the mileage is low, it has never caused me any serious trouble, and the ride and handling are excellent. I am now looking for a car to replace my Figo. I have the Hyundai i20 N Line in mind. Please suggest a car with great handling. Mileage is not a concern.

The Hyundai i20 N Line is a great choice if you want a fun-to-drive hatchback. Its 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine will feel like a huge step up from the 1.2-litre petrol in your Figo, and the handling is sweet and engaging. It is a solid package with a spacious cabin, a premium feel, and good features. The ride is on the firmer side, so if you are fine with that, it is a strong buy.
If you want something that drives well with a more comfortable ride, you can also consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor with the turbo petrol engine. It is quick and efficient, and despite being a compact SUV, it handles corners well. You also get more ground clearance if that matters to you.

I’m planning to buy my first car. I can drive but not confidently yet, and I’m in the defence forces so I drive only while on leave. Please suggest which car I should buy. I’m considering the Maruti Fronx Delta CNG, Hyundai Venue N, or Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder. If you have any other good options, please tell me.

We'd suggest getting a compact car rather than a larger one, which will help you make a judgment easily. Also, since you are likely to drive the car infrequently, it is better to pick a petrol, rather than pay a premium for a corresponding CNG version.

We'd suggest you shortlist the new Hyundai Venue 1.2-litre petrol and the Maruti Fronx/Toyota Taisor 1.2-litre petrol. All of these are smooth and user-friendly options.

Between them, the Venue will feel more spacious, and its high seating and SUV-like driving position will make it a touch easier to drive than the Maruti/Toyota options.

I want to buy a new automatic car within an on-road budget of ₹12–14 lakh. My monthly running is around 200 km in heavy city traffic, with only a couple of highway trips each year. I prefer a car with good interiors, reliable service support, and features like a 360° camera. Which models should I consider?

The Nissan Magnite Turbo CVT and Tata Altroz 1.2 petrol DCT, both get excellent, smooth automatic transmissions, as well as a 360-degree camera.

Between the two, the Tata car gets our vote for its spaciousness, value, and overall robust build. The Toyota Taisor Turbo AT and Maruti Fronx Turbo AT with the 360-degree camera will be relatively pricier.

However, these brands have a better reputation for service and maintenance.

Hi! I’m planning to buy a hatchback or sub-4m SUV for mostly solo highway driving, around 4,500 km per month. I’m looking for a comfortable automatic car with good mileage that can seat 4 people comfortably. I’ve shortlisted the Toyota Glanza V AMT since it offers a Maruti engine (which I’ve always liked) without being a Maruti-branded car, something my family prefers to avoid. Given this context, do you think the Glanza is the right choice in 2025, or would you recommend any other non-Maruti options?

If the badge is enough to convince your family that it isn't a Maruti Suzuki, and you would like to purchase the Toyota Glanza, then go right ahead, because it is a very capable premium hatchback. Its 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is one of the smoothest and most efficient around, as you no doubt know, and it is also quite well loaded with features and spacious as well.
However, since you do a lot of highway driving, you should also consider the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, which, once again, is a Maruti Suzuki Fronx with a Toyota badge.
You might have to up your budget a bit here, but the advantage is higher ground clearance as well as the option of the punchier 1.0 Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine, which is efficient, but will give you a bit more punch out on the highway.

Hi Autocar team, need your expert suggestion. I have a 5-year-old petrol Nexon Automatic (XZA+). I'm fed up with the regular mechanical faults (one or another) and am now looking to change my car to another automatic. My preferences are safety, low maintenance, reliability, fuel economy, good interior, and comfort . I have a stretched budget of 12-13 lakhs for the automatic gearbox. Which car should I buy?

Since you are coming from a Tata Nexon, we'd recommend you narrow down your choices to the VXI AT variant of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the G Turbo AT variant of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor.
Both options are fuel efficient, pack in all the safety features, and come with the peace of mind associated with their respective brands. The Brezza is a bit more spacious, while the Taisor offers stronger performance.
