Within a budget of around ₹12 lakh (could extend some), I want to buy a petrol manual car which is fun to drive, reliable and will not be so heavy on my pocket for fueling and maintenance. My monthly usage is around 400km, mostly city and occasional road trips. Which car will you suggest?

You can consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor in their top turbo petrol manual variants. The engine, despite being turbocharged, has hardly any turbo lag and offers good punch. It also comes with a light clutch and a slick gearbox, which makes it easy to drive in the city. Even on an open road or around a ghat section, both these cars are surprisingly fun to drive, and over bad roads, the suspension delivers a comfortable ride as well. For a turbo petrol engine, efficiency is also quite impressive. Overall, there is actually not much to fault here.
If you want something that feels a bit more premium, you can look at the Skoda Kylaq, the Signature+ MT variant. The Kylaq is a fun car to drive, but the clutch is heavier, and you will feel more turbo lag. It will also not be as efficient as the Fronx turbo petrol, and the peace of mind ownership experience may not be as strong.

My daily driving is around 20 km in a small city and nearby villages, and my budget is Rs 12-14 lakh. I prefer a car with a powerful engine. Which car would you recommend?

There are a couple of options that you can consider. We've listed the highlights for each.

1) Skoda Kylaq: Punchy engine, fun handling. Rear seat space is tight, though

2) Mahindra XUV 3XO petrol: Strong engine, good ride comfort. Boot space is limited

3) Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo/ Toyota Taisor Turbo: Strong engine. Reliability and hassle-free ownership experience

4) Citroen C3: Strong engine. Feels a bit basic, and the service network isn't very large.

Hi, I’m using a Ford EcoSport AT petrol. I’m very happy with the car’s build quality, handling, and performance, but I’m concerned about the mileage. In Bangalore city, I get about 8 km/l, and on the highway it’s about 14 km/l. I want to upgrade to a similar SUV with greater mileage (over 20 km/l), good safety, and durability, costing between ₹10 L and ₹15 L on-road. Please suggest suitable options.

Unfortunately, there's no petrol automatic compact SUV today that will achieve anywhere near 20kpl in the real world, in the city or on the highway. The most efficient petrol compact SUVs are the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor

If you want something more spacious, consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, though it is slightly less efficient. If you want more efficiency still, though, consider a diesel compact SUV like the Hyundai Venue or Kia Sonet. They are the smoothest and most efficient in the segment, and are more likely to get close to or surpass 20kpl.

Hi, I am planning to buy my first automatic car. It will be used mostly within Bangalore city, and occasionally, I will drive to my native place. Could you please suggest a good family car within a budget of Rs 10 lakh?

As your first car, we recommend the Hyundai i20 petrol-IVT for its smooth and refined powertrain. The interiors feel upmarket, and it is spacious and comfortable too. The Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT variant should fall within your budget, and despite being a mid-variant, it covers the basics well.
If you want a crossover-like option, you could opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor with the 1.2 petrol-AMT combination. Do keep in mind that it is likely to be more fuel-efficient than the Hyundai; the drive experience won't be as smooth or seamless.

I own an Altroz DCT but want to replace it due to mileage issues. My running is almost 400 km per month, mostly within the city. I want an SUV in the range of around ₹12 lakh, preferably an automatic. Please suggest.

You could consider the CNG-AMT version of the updated Tata Punch, which gives you the best of both worlds - running costs of a CNG, and the convenience of an automatic.
If you want a petrol-only offering, you could consider the Maruti Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor 1.2 petrol-AMT, both of which are powered by a very fuel-efficient and smooth powertrain.

I am planning to buy a new car. I used to drive a Ford Figo and have sold it. I want a petrol manual transmission car with turbo petrol performance, good mileage, safety, and features. My budget is ₹12-15 lakh. I am confused between sub-4m SUVs (mid or above variants) like Kushaq, 3XO, Venue, Sonet, and compact SUVs (base variants) like Seltos, MG Hector, Kushaq, Creta. Please suggest which one I should choose.

Given that you previously owned a Ford Figo, we would suggest considering either the Skoda Kylaq or the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Within your budget, you can easily get the top Prestige Plus variant of the Kylaq. The AX7 Luxury variant of the 3XO is more expensive but still fits within your budget. Both cars are enjoyable to drive, offer a comfortable ride quality and come well equipped.

The main difference between the two lies in rear seat space and boot capacity. The Kylaq’s rear seat is not as wide and offers less knee room than the 3XO, making it more suitable as a four-seater. On the plus side, it has a much larger boot. Also, keep in mind that both cars use powerful turbo petrol engines, which are not the most fuel-efficient. The clutch is on the heavier side, too, making city driving a bit more effort-intensive.

If better fuel efficiency and a lighter, more progressive clutch are priorities, you could also consider the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx turbo petrol manual in their top variants. Both are more affordable than the Kylaq and the 3XO. While they do not feel as premium inside and miss out on a few features, the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine is one of the best small turbo petrol engines to drive.

It is smooth, responsive, even at low speeds, with minimal turbo lag. The slick gearbox and light clutch make it very easy to drive in traffic. Both cars are spacious enough, offer a usable boot, and have a comfortable ride. They also deliver much better fuel efficiency. With the Maruti, getting double-digit mileage is easy, while achieving similar efficiency in the Skoda and Mahindra can be more challenging.

I want to buy a compact SUV (manual petrol) within a budget of ₹13 lakh. My priorities are a good interior, smooth ride quality, and good fuel economy. Please suggest at least three suitable options.

You should check out the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, which has a plush ride and scores well on fuel economy. Its interior doesn't wow with the latest tech and gizmos, but scores for space and excellent seat comfort.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo/ Toyota Taisor Turbo would be next on our list. There's a bit more flash inside the cabin, the turbocharged engine is more exciting than the Brezza's and fuel economy is also good. Again, ride comfort is impressive.

The new Hyundai Venue is also an option. It's got a modern interior but trails the Marutis on ride quality.

My on-road budget is around Rs 15 lakh. I am unable to decide between the Urban Cruiser Taisor, XUV 3XO, Nexon and Fronx. I am looking for good mileage, safety, AMT and a sunroof. Please guide me.

If you are looking for a sunroof, you will have to remove the Maruti Fronx and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor from your consideration set, as neither of them gets one. Between the Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the Nexon is a better bet because of mileage and overall cabin space.
So go ahead with the Tata Nexon. In your budget, you can even look at Nexon Petrol DCT, which is a more responsive transmission than AMT.

I want a second car for my wife. Requirements are an automatic transmission and a 360-degree camera. Budget is Rs 12 lakh.

Get the Maruti Suzuki Baleno petrol AMT. If you want something that's a bit more stylish and has a crossover-esque look, then opt for the Maruti Fronx petrol AMT, or their Toyota equivalents - Glanza and Taisor, respectively.
These are powered by a smooth and efficient petrol engine; the 5-speed automated manual gearbox is convenient; and they are equipped with a 360-degree camera too. These are compact and user-friendly, and will easily fall into your budget.

I am planning to buy my first car under ₹12 lakh. I travel around 40km daily and also do monthly trips of about 300km on hilly terrain and bad roads with my family. Please suggest a suitable car.

You can go for the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, the V Turbo Petrol MT variant. It will be in your budget. Taisor's ride is great for bad roads; it is a good-sized car for a small family with decent boot space. The drivetrain is refined and offers good fuel efficiency. It also has a mild hybrid, which improves efficiency.
The 1-litre turbo petrol engine will not feel underpowered even in hilly conditions. If you want the convenience of automatic, you can go for the G Turbo AT variant, but for that, you have to stretch your budget.
