Hi all, I need some suggestions. I am looking for my first car and am a new driver. I will mainly use it for weekend trips, along with one or two long road trips across India each year. I am looking for a 5-seater SUV with very good suspension, with a maximum budget of Rs 20 lakh. Low running and maintenance costs are important, as I plan to keep the car for 10-15 years. Should I go for a naturally aspirated or turbo-petrol/diesel engine? I am currently considering the Tata Sierra Adventure+ diesel automatic. Should I wait for the Creta 2027? Also, should I consider a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, diesel or petrol? I have heard about high maintenance costs, electronic glitches, rusting and paint issues with Tata cars, although their build quality is said to be very good. What would be the best option for my requirements?

Go for the Tata Sierra Adventure+ diesel automatic. It is the best fit for your requirements. You are a new driver looking for your first car, with weekend trips and occasional long India tours, and you want a 5-seater SUV with very good suspension, low running and maintenance costs, and a long ownership period of 10-15 years. The Tata Sierra diesel automatic is a genuinely comfortable and spacious SUV with a strong diesel engine, and it is well-suited to long-distance touring. The diesel engine will keep running costs in check on highway trips, and the Sierra's ride quality is genuinely impressive, which is exactly what you are looking for.On your other questions: do not wait for the Creta 2027. It is still a few months away, and there is no guarantee it will land exactly in your budget. On the fuel type, diesel makes sense for your usage pattern with long highway trips. Hybrid or plug-in hybrid only makes sense if your running is predominantly city, which is not the case here. On Tata reliability, the Sierra is a new-generation product, and Tata has made genuine improvements, but it is fair to say that Hyundai and Maruti still have a more consistent long-term ownership track record. That said, the Sierra is a genuinely good product and worth considering. If you want the absolute safest long-term ownership experience, the Kia Seltos diesel automatic or the current-generation Hyundai Creta diesel automatic are the alternatives to consider. They are not as spacious as the Sierra, but it is a very reliable, with a proven ownership track record.

I am 37 years old and still attending driving school, so I am a beginner driver. My budget is Rs. 17-18 lakh, and my monthly running will be around 300-500 km at most. I am confused between a manual and an IVT. My preferences are the Mahindra XUV 3XO, new Kia Seltos HTE(O) IVT, Tata Sierra Pure DCA, and new Mahindra BE 6 Sport Utility Pack Two with BaaS. Please suggest which would be the best option for me. I live in Bangalore.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO automatic. As a new driver in Bangalore with low monthly running, the 3XO automatic is the most sensible choice. This Mahindra car is compact and easy to manoeuvre in city traffic; the automatic gearbox takes away the stress of constant gear changes, and the car is well equipped for the price. The Seltos HTE(O) IVT is a good car, but at this budget you are getting the lower variant, which means you are missing out on a lot of features. The Sierra Pure DCA is a nice car, but it is a much larger vehicle and not as easy to handle for a new driver in the city.

I am confused between the Tata Safari Petrol MT and the Tata Sierra Accomplished/Accomplished+ Petrol AT. This will be my first car, and I plan to keep it for around 8-10 years. My primary requirement is a real-world city mileage of at least 10-11kpl. Most of the driving will be in the city, with a monthly running of around 300km and one long trip every 1-2 months. Good road presence is also important. I would also prefer an engine with enough power for effortless highway overtaking. My wife is particularly interested in the passenger screen available on the Sierra Accomplished+, which is why I am considering stretching the budget for it. However, the Accomplished+ is around Rs 2 lakh over my original budget. Considering my usage and requirements, which car would make the most sense? If the Sierra is the better choice, should it be the Accomplished or Accomplished+? Is spending around Rs 2.5 lakh more on the Accomplished+ mainly for the passenger screen and additional features actually worth it?

Firstly, ask yourself whether you need the third row seating. If yes, then the Tata Safari is your best bet - it is a spacious three-row SUV. That said, its manual gearbox is not the smoothest, nor is its clutch as effort-free as that of most other smaller mid-size SUVs. Also, to extract 10-11kpl from your short city runs will be difficult. These are trade-offs you will have to make for its road presence, performance, as well as cabin space. If you don't need the extra row of seats, it makes sense to opt for the Tata Sierra instead. Do note, it isn't an efficient turbo-petrol-automatic combination, so be prepared for higher monthly fuel bills. The good news is that the 1.5 Turbo-Petrol's performance is strong, and the 6-speed automatic gearbox works smoothly. It is a spacious, sturdy SUV; you can choose from the multiple variants on offer. If you plan to keep the car for an 8-10 year period, it could be worth stretching your budget a bit and getting all the bells and whistles.

Which car is better for city and highway driving: the Tata Sierra or the Mahindra Thar Roxx?

Verified
3w

The Tata Sierra and Mahindra Thar Roxx are fundamentally different cars aimed at very different buyers. The Sierra is a family-friendly SUV with a focus on comfort, space and refinement, while the Thar Roxx is a lifestyle off-roader with a rugged, go-anywhere character. For a mix of city and highway driving, the Sierra is the better choice. It offers a far more comfortable ride, a spacious and practical cabin, better refinement and a more relaxed driving experience. The Thar Roxx is great fun off-road and has a strong personality, but it is compromised as a daily driver with a bouncy ride, limited rear seat comfort and a less-refined overall package. The Sierra is the car you will be happier living with every day, while the Thar Roxx is the car you buy for adventure. If your usage is city and highway, go for the Tata car. If your usage is off-road trails and weekend escapes, go for the Mahindra car.

I want to buy a family use car under 15 lakh. I am confused between Tata Sierra and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Verified
3w

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It is the more sensible family car and will give you a better long-term ownership experience. The Grand Vitara is a proven product with a comfortable ride, good real world fuel efficiency and Maruti’s strong service network, which makes it a very easy car to live with. It is also a well-rounded family SUV with enough space for five, a decent boot and a good balance between city and highway use.The Tata Sierra is a more interesting product with a more premium cabin and a more distinctive design, but it is a newer car with a shorter ownership track record and Tata’s service experience is still not as consistent as Maruti’s. For a family car under Rs.15 lakh, the Grand Vitara is the safer and more sensible choice.
