I have a budget of โ‚น18 lakh and an average daily commute of around 75 km. I am planning to buy an electric car - what are the best EV options available in this price range?

The best sub Rs 20 lakh EV for city use and short distances is the MG Windsor. It has compact dimensions which give it good manouverability in the city but without compromising on cabin space, which is very generous. It is easy-to-drive, well-equipped and has enough range for your daily runs of 75km and more.

A brittle ride and a fair bit of road noise that creeps into the cabin are the only real drawbacks. You can get the Exclusive Pro and Essence Pro, depending on how much you can stretch your budget.

Hello Autocar team. We are a family of five and mostly chauffeur-driven. Our daily running is almost 70 km. We want to buy an EV to save on fuel cost, primarily for city driving and occasional round trips of about 180-200 km to our native place. We have shortlisted the Punch EV Empowered S Long Range, the XUV3XO EV AX5, and the Windsor. Which one should we choose? We prefer comfort, safety, and service reliability. This will be our second car.

While the Tata Punch EV is a good all-rounder, it is perhaps a size too small for a family of 5 or to be chauffeur driven in. The Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Windsor have far more spacious cabins, but then the Mahindra is low on boot space when it comes to your 180-200km round trip. However, this would still be our pick as it has a spacious cabin for 5, tough chassis and comfortable ride quality.

The Windsor may be more spacious on the whole, but its suspension and ride are quite stiff, and its large touchscreen, which controls the entire car, is full of bugs and glitches. Moreover, in standard guise, it has a very low range, and you would have to move up to the Pro version, which will increase your budget. Also consider the Tata Nexon EV, which, though expensive, feels like a more complete car than any of these.

I am planning to buy the MG Hector Savvy Pro (top model) for around โ‚น21.5 lakh. It has almost all the required features and is very spacious compared to other cars in this price range. However, I am a little sceptical because I have seen many of your replies recommending other cars in this range-you mostly recommend Sierra and Seltos, but never Hector. Can you please let me know the reason? I will make my decision accordingly.

We recommend cars depending on people's specific needs. MG Hector is a spacious car and comes with a lot of features, and if someone is looking for those in a large SUV, we do recommend Hector.

Hector has not received a full, ground-up generational change since its launch in 2019. Mg has updated it many times with facelifts, but to compete in the fast-changing segment, Hector would do better to get a full generation change.

Hector's petrol and diesel engines are found to be thirsty units in the real world compared to their competitors. So if someone's priority is mileage, Hector falls low in their recommendation set.

I am looking for a petrol automatic SUV, as mostly my running is in the city with 3-4 short trips a year. I already drive a Hyundai Verna, so I want to avoid Hyundai and Kia. My main requirements are comfort, reliability and ride quality. Currently, I have been planning to buy the MG Hector Savy Pro 1.5 Turbo. Is it a good buy, and what else should I consider?

MG has recently updated the Hector with minor changes, but the pricing now looks quite attractive. Hector gives you a lot of space and features at an attractive price point. The ride quality is great too, and while MG has improved its service network over the years, it still does not score very high on reliability. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol isnโ€™t the most fuel-efficient in stop-go traffic. If space, comfort and features are your top priorities, the Hector is a strong value-for-money choice.
If youโ€™re open to alternatives, the Tata Sierra is worth keeping an eye on. It is an all-new product that promises a comfortable ride and a roomy cabin. However, being a new model, it may be wise to wait for real-world ownership feedback before deciding.
The other option is the recently launched Mahindra XUV 7XO. It offers strong engines, a new impressive suspension setup and a long feature list, but to get all the creature comforts it offers, you may need to stretch your budget for higher variants.

I am looking for an automatic electric car under โ‚น13 lakh. My daily commute is around 40km. Which EV should I buy?

There aren't too many electric cars below the Rs 13 lakh mark, just the MG Comet, the Tata Tiago EV, and the Tata Punch EV.
If you plan to keep your current Maruti Suzuki Celerio, the MG Comet will do well as an intra-city commuter and as a good second car. However, if you need this as a primary car, we would recommend the electric Tata Punch. The four doors make it more practical, and the larger wheels and better high-speed performance give you the flexibility to take it on small trips out of the city too.
You will get the medium range within your budget, but if you can stretch it, the long range would make good sense as a primary car.

Which vehicle should I buy, the MG Hector Plus or the Mahindra 7XO? I am looking for an SUV that is a 7-seater.

Of the two, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is the better pick. The XUV 7XO is packed with tech and is far nicer to drive than the MG Hector, too. Mahindra's engines and gearboxes are highlights, and the 7XO's updated suspension also gives it the edge in ride comfort. Importantly, the 7XO offers a better third-row experience than the Hector Plus.

That said, the XUV 7XO is not the best 7-seater for the money. Especially in case the third row space and comfort are a deal breaker for you. The Tata Safari offers a more comfortable third row among petrol/diesel SUVs of the segment.

If you are open to electric, the Mahindra XEV 9S is worth a look. While you could think of it as an all-electric version of the XUV 7XO, the 9S does boast of a better third row. The option to slide its middle row seats makes all the difference to balance second and third row space in the cabin.

My budget is โ‚น20 lakh, and I am looking to buy a family car. I am confused between choosing an EV or a petrol car. The Honda Elevate ZX AT is one option I am considering, along with the MG Windsor Pro Essence. Please help me decide.

The MG Windsor Essence Pro is spacious enough for four people, but it has limitations as a family car. Firstly, being an electric car with a moderate range, it's best as a city car and not convenient for out-of-town trips. Also, the boot isnโ€™t spacious enough for a family of four's luggage on a long weekend trip.
The Honda Elevate is the more sensible choice as a family car. It is reliable, efficient, very spacious, and has a big boot. With this Honda car, you canโ€™t really go wrong.

I have a family of six, including kids aged 11 and 6 and elderly parents. Iโ€™m looking for a petrol automatic car focused on comfort rather than performance, mainly for city use and one annual road trip. Annual usage is under 5,000 km, and my budget is preferably within โ‚น22 lakh. Which car should I choose?

The Kia Carens Clavis is the ideal pick for your requirements. It's a well-packaged MPV that offers comfortable seating across all three rows. A one-touch operation for the middle row seat fold makes access to the last row easy. Also, there is ample movement built into the middle row to balance space for all passengers.

The Clavis is also easy to drive and doesn't intimidate as some three-row SUVs can. From the Clavis line-up, the Turbo DCT HTX(O) is the one to buy.

Of the other three-row petrol-auto options, there's the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari.

I own two cars, a Honda City and a Baleno, both mainly used for city driving. My total petrol expense is around โ‚น17,000 per month, with the Baleno being used more frequently than the City. I am now looking to buy a trouble-free EV, but am confused between the Tata Punch EV, the MG Windsor EV, and the new 3XO EV. I live in an independent house, so home charging is not an issue. Please guide me.

Electric cars work particularly well for city driving, and all three options youโ€™re considering are solid choices. In our real-world range test, the Tata Punch EV (Long Range) delivered around 242 km in urban conditions, which is more than adequate for everyday city use. It is a compact car, though, so if the smaller size isnโ€™t a concern for you, the Punch EV is a sensible option.
If cabin space is a higher priority, the Windsor EV is the better fit. In our range test, it returned a real-world figure of about 327 km in the city. The Pro variant is likely to offer even better range, while also providing a noticeably roomier cabin and a more comfortable overall experience.

My budget is โ‚น7 lakh and I do not want a Maruti Suzuki. I am open to other car makers and also considering an EV. Which car should I choose?

Unfortunately, no EV is available within a budget of Rs 7 lakh. You will have to extend your budget by at least 1-1.50 lakh to purchase the entry-level MG Comet or Tata Tiago EV

The MG Comet is an excellent urban runabout, due to its tiny footprint, which makes it easy to manoeuvre and park. Occasionally, it can seat four passengers in relative comfort, with the only limiting factor being access to its rear seats due to its two-door layout. The Tata Tiago EV is relatively more conventional in its approach, and it drives a bit better than the Comet.

Also, it is the Tata Tiago EV, which will feel a bit more comfortable and confident for the occasional highway drives. Hence, if this is going to be your primary vehicle, we'd recommend the Tata Tiago EV for its well-roundedness.
