Maruti Suzuki S-Presso
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is priced between Rs 3.50 lakh and Rs 5.27 lakh (ex-showroom), and is the brand’s most affordable car. The S-Presso competes against the Renault Kwid, though buyers may consider the Maruti Alto K10 as an alternative too. The S-Presso is a hatchback and is based on Maruti Suzuki’s Heartect platform, and boasts an ‘SUV-like’ 180mm of ground clearance.
The Maruti S-Presso is equipped with a 1.0-litre K10C petrol engine producing 68.5hp and 91.1Nm of torque. This three-pot mill can be mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission). The S-Presso is offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit, which is available with the LXi and VXi trims. The CNG option is only equipped with the manual gearbox, while the output is rated at 56.7hp and 82.1Nm in CNG mode.
The ARAI-certified mileage of the Maruti S-Presso petrol is between 24.12kpl and 25.30kpl, while the S-Presso CNG is rated at 32.73km/kg. Petrol variants seat 5 occupants, though the CNG version is limited to 4 people due to the CNG tank. The Maruti S-Presso’s design tries to convince onlookers of its SUV-inspired look, featuring an upright front fascia, twin-chamber headlamps and C-shaped tail lamps. Higher trims get side body cladding and body-coloured exterior elements.
Its high stance means getting into the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is easy. The high-set seating position allows a reasonably commanding view out, while the simplistic dashboard design looks relatively dated. On the other hand, the large glasshouse and thin door pillars let in plenty of light. Some of the equipment highlights include keyless entry, manual air-conditioning, power steering, and a touchscreen infotainment system. Standard safety kit of the S-Presso are dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors, and pre-tensioning front seatbelts.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso price & variants
The Maruti S-Presso is offered in Std (O), LXi (O), VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) trim levels. These are further spread across a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options – the latter is only available with the VXi (O) and VXi+ (O).
Std (O): The base trim of the S-Presso comes with fabric seats, halogen headlamps and a digital instrument cluster. However, there’s no air-conditioning, power steering or an audio system of any kind. Its safety equipment includes rear parking sensors, dual airbags, ABS with EBD and electronic stability control as standard. This trim is for those who want the cheapest S-Presso and no modern comfort features.
LXi (O): This is where the S-Presso adds manual AC, power steering, a roof antenna, and an idle start-stop system for the petrol variant. This is also the most affordable trim with the factory-fitted CNG kit. This trim is for buyers who want the low running costs of CNG and can do without any good-to-have features with their S-Presso.
VXi (O): This trim adds remote keyless entry, front power windows, central locking, and Maruti’s ‘SmartPlay Dock’ audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and a two-speaker audio system. The AMT option further adds hill-hold assist for extra convenience. This is the highest-spec trim of the S-Presso CNG variant. This is for those who want a reasonably equipped city car without spending more.
VXi+ (O): At the top of the range sits the VXi+ (O). It gets body-coloured bumpers and ORVMs, powered ORVMs, a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, steering-mounted audio and voice controls, and a rear parcel tray. While it costs the most, this trim makes the Maruti S-Presso feel as the most complete package.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso stands out with a tall, upright stance that blurs the line between a hatchback and a micro-SUV. Its boxy proportions, high roofline and tall ride height give it a bold presence for its size, while the upright front end with squared headlamps and a slim grille slot evoke a rugged and friendly personality.
Engineering for the S-Presso emphasises simplicity and urban agility. The compact footprint and light steering make it easy to manoeuvre through tight city streets. Suspension travel is generous, sacrificing sharp handling for a compliant ride that soaks up urban imperfections with confidence.
7
Inside, the cabin prioritises practicality over sophistication. Hard plastics dominate the dash, but their robust feel suits the car’s utilitarian character. The seats are upright and supportive, and the tall roofline helps create a surprisingly airy cabin for a micro car.
Front seat comfort is adequate for daily commuting, with decent under-thigh support and generous headroom. Rear space is acceptable for two adults over short distances, though lack of under-thigh support and limited legroom make longer journeys less comfortable.
Boot space is modest, typical of cars in this class. Clever storage cubbies and a functional parcel shelf add everyday usability, but overall interior refinement falls short of larger hatchbacks.
8
The S-Presso is powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine tuned for city use. It produces manageable power suited to the car’s lightweight design and small size. In everyday traffic it feels confident, with sufficient low-speed torque that keeps urban progress easy.
Refinement is respectable for a micro car. Engine noise is noticeable under hard acceleration, but it remains smooth at typical city speeds. Vibrations are generally controlled, although cabin noise from wind and tyre tread becomes more apparent as speeds increase.
8
Fuel efficiency is a strength of the S-Presso. Its small engine and lightweight make it economical in most driving situations. In real-world running, the car delivers high mileage numbers that match the expectations for budget-centric city commuters.
Official figures from Maruti Suzuki quoted high efficiency for both the manual and automated manual (AGS) gearboxes, reinforcing the S-Presso’s appeal for cost-conscious owners.
6
Ride quality is compliant and confidence-inspiring on broken urban surfaces. Suspension absorbs potholes and speed breakers with ease, and body motions remain composed at moderate speeds.
Steering is light and easy, perfect for city traffic and tight parking, but feels vague at higher speeds. Handling is predictable rather than engaging, with body roll evident in fast corners — typical for a tall-roof city car prioritising comfort over dynamic sharpness.
6
The feature list for the S-Presso positions it above basic entry hatchbacks. It offers a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, digital instrument cluster, steering-mounted controls and front power windows — all of which add a sense of modernity to a budget-centric package.
Safety kit includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD and seatbelt reminders. Higher variants add driver-side airbags, though optional safety features are limited compared with larger cars.
8
Priced attractively for a city hatch, the S-Presso delivers strong value for what it sets out to be — a simple, practical and economical urban commuter. Its bold design, easy manoeuvrability, good fuel efficiency and useful feature list stand out in the micro car segment.
It does not feel as refined or spacious as larger hatchbacks, but for town-centric buyers and first-time car owners looking for low running costs and fuss-free daily use, the S-Presso ticks most boxes.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso FAQs
Yes, the Maruti S-Presso is a good first car as it offers a relatively good cabin space and a peppy engine. The S-Presso is the most affordable car in India and offers good fuel efficiency, saving costs in the long run.
While the S-Presso can do a 0-100kph run in less than 15 seconds, which is decent for its size, it does not feel stable at high speeds. The steering wheel feels vague, and the body roll is also not well contained, which does not make it an ideal highway cruiser.
In city conditions, the S-Presso’s 180mm ground clearance and pliant suspension make for an easy driving experience. However, as speeds increase, the suspension's inherent stiffness is visible as the hatchback shows some vertical movements.
No, the S-Presso will be good for four average-sized individuals. The front seats are comfortable for average-sized individuals, while people more than 6-feet may feel the headroom a bit intrusive. The rear seats, however, are very comfortable, even for taller passengers, but can seat only 2 comfortably.
The Maruti S-Presso is a small SUV with a relatively roomy cabin and is well-equipped for its price. It is easy to drive and also offers a good fuel economy, while being the most affordable mass-market car in India.
Questions you may find useful
Hi I am currently using an S-Presso manual car and planning to upgrade to an automatic sub-4-metre SUV. My budget is Rs. 10-12 lakh, and my annual usage is around 6,000 km, with 60% highway and 40% city driving in Chennai. I am also planning to take solo trips twice a year. Please suggest a car that offers good mileage, low maintenance costs, and strong safety.
With your 6,000 km annual running, a petrol automatic is the right choice. Your 60% highway usage and solo trips suggest you need a car that is stable at speed, comfortable over long distances, and easy to live with in the city. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic fits this brief well. It uses a 6-speed torque converter automatic, which is smooth in traffic and relaxed on the highway. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is reliable, easy to maintain, and well suited to your running. This Maruti Suzuki car also has a comfortable ride, good ground clearance and a stable highway manner, making it a significant upgrade over the S-Presso for long drives. Maruti's service network and low maintenance costs are a clear advantage too. If you want something more fun to drive, the Skoda Kylaq is worth considering. This Skoda car offers a more powerful turbo petrol engine, but the Brezza remains the safer long-term ownership bet. Overall, the Brezza automatic is the most balanced recommendation for your usage and budget.
Hi, I am currently driving a 2021 VW Taigun 1.0 MT with annual running of ~10,000 KM (60% City, 40% Highway). The car is running fine, but it becomes a pain in heavy city traffic due to constant gear shifting & turbo lag. I am confused between 3 options: (1) Get the cheapest possible city automatic like an S-presso AGS and use it with Taigun, (2) Get a proper AT like Amaze/i20 CVT or Brezza AT and upgrade Taigun after a few years, or (3) Sell Taigun and upgrade to a proper AT SUV. Please suggest.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso AGS, which has an AMT thought convenient, doesn’t offer a smooth driving experience because of the way AMTs work - their main weakness is that annoying pause in between gear shifts, which feels quite jerky and causes ‘head nod’, a term that is synonymous with AMTs.Upgrading to a proper AT leaves you with very few options; some of the ATs are diesels, and the only mid-size SUV petrol AT is the Tata Sierra. Your option of getting a city-centric car, keeping the Taigun for highway driving, and upgrading it later makes the most sense. The Honda Amaze, with its CVT transmission, makes the most sense as a city car. It is smooth and comfortable, taking the stress out of city driving, whilst the manual 1.0 Taigun is a solid highway car. The Taigun is due for a facelift around February–March 2026, and other new midsize SUVs, including an all-new Creta, are expected around 2027. So yes, hang on to your Volkswagen Taigun and pick up an Amaze for your city chores.
I want a small car with good fuel efficiency. My budget is ₹6 lakh. I’m considering the Alto K10 and S-Presso as I want reliability and hassle-free ownership. Which one is better, or should I consider another car?
Given your requirements and your budget of ₹6 lakh, you're right, the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and S-Presso are your best options. Both of these Maruti Suzuki cars use the same engine and gearboxes, and offer the same hassle-free driving experience.Of the two, the Alto K10 has the advantage of offering six airbags as standard across the range, while the S-Presso only gets two. However, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso offers more interior space, should you travel with passengers often. You could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. You might only get a mid-range variant in your budget, but it offers more space and a more upmarket feel than the Alto and S-Presso.
Want to buy a used Automatic(CVT or TC) with a budget of 6 lacs for my father. Please suggest
There are no new cars available at around Rs. 6 lakh that come with a torque-converter automatic or a CVT. However, if you are open to buying used, then a Honda Amaze CVT would be a good fit. Look for a low-mileage example with a complete service history, and make sure you get a thorough pre-purchase inspection done. Ideally, buy from a trusted, certified used-car platform that offers a warranty. If you must buy new, then consider the Maruti Alto K10 or S-Presso. Both are available with an AMT. While the shifts are relatively slow, they are reasonably smooth and do a decent job in city traffic.
I’m looking for a compact mini SUV or a small car with a petrol automatic. My daily usage is under 25 km, and my monthly usage is under 1,000 km. My budget is a maximum of Rs 6 lakh, and my priority is the best fuel economy.
The Maruti Alto K10 VXI AMT is the only one that fits your requirements. It suits your use because the car is small and light, so the 1.0 petrol delivers excellent fuel efficiency. In our experience, this Maruti 1.0 engine paired with the AMT is among the most fuel-efficient petrol automatics you can buy. It is also simple to own, with low service costs and a wide dealer reach, which will make your ownership experience stress-free. Do note the trade-offs. The back seat and boot are small, on rough roads it can feel a bit bouncy, and it's not best suited to highway duties. If you really want a taller, mini SUV look, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso VXI AMT is the closest match, but in many cities, its on-road price will cross Rs. 6 lakh.
