Suggest a good automatic car petrol within 6 lakh.

Unfortunately, you don't have too many automatic options within Rs 6 lakh (on-road). Your options are Maruti Alto, Maruti S-Presso, Renault Kwid, and thanks to some on-going discounts, you could even manage to get a Celerio VXi AMT, which is the nicest and most premium option among the ones listed.

I am looking for a small automatic car primarily for city driving. My priorities are a low price and good fuel efficiency. Could you please suggest the best options available?

Unfortunately, given your tight budget of Rs 6 lakh, you don't have too many options. Choose between the Maruti Alto and the Maruti S-Presso, both of which come with the same 1-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox. Both are also fairly similar in terms of fuel efficiency, with the Alto returning a claimed 24.90kpl while the S-presso is said to do a marginally higher 25.3kpl.

Maruti Alto AT prices range between Rs 5.53 lakh to Rs 6.07 lakh (on-road Delhi), while S-presso automatic prices range between Rs 5.31 lakh and Rs 5.85 lakh (on-road Delhi).

Alternatively, dealers will be offering discounts on models like the Maruti Celerio and Renault Kwid, so you could even consider those.

Is the Maruti Suzuki S Presso a good option for city riding if my everyday run is around 35 km?

The Maruti S-Presso is the most affordable car in the country, and as a city runabout, it is a good option. It is a very user-friendly car thanks to its peppy yet fuel-efficient petrol engine; the clutch, gearbox and steering are light; and due to its high seating visibility, all around is good too. Moreover, spare parts costs are likely to be inexpensive and being a Maruti, servicing will be a relatively fuss-free affair. If you like the S-Presso for what it offers, go for it.

I need an automatic car within a budget of ₹7.5 lakh, and I prefer Maruti Suzuki. Could you please suggest some options?

You should choose between the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Zeta AMT and the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT ZXI Plus. Both models are powered by 1.2-litre petrol engines that give them a power advantage over other automatic Marutis in your budget (namely, Celerio, Alto K10 and S-Presso).

Both use automated manual transmission or AMT-type automatics. While these aren't the slickest automatic gearboxes, Maruti's AMTs work smoothly enough if you adopt an easygoing driving style. Fuel economy is also excellent.

Of the two, the Wagon R is more spacious and has a more absorbent ride comfort. On the other hand, the Ignis packs in more features for the same money. If cabin space isn't a deal breaker, opt for the Ignis.

Hi, I am currently driving a 2021 VW Taigun 1.0 MT with annual running of ~10,000 KM (60% City, 40% Highway). The car is running fine, but it becomes a pain in heavy city traffic due to constant gear shifting & turbo lag. I am confused between 3 options: (1) Get the cheapest possible city automatic like an S-presso AGS and use it with Taigun, (2) Get a proper AT like Amaze/i20 CVT or Brezza AT and upgrade Taigun after a few years, or (3) Sell Taigun and upgrade to a proper AT SUV. Please suggest.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso AGS, which has an AMT thought convenient, doesn’t offer a smooth driving experience because of the way AMTs work - their main weakness is that annoying pause in between gear shifts, which feels quite jerky and causes ‘head nod’, a term that is synonymous with AMTs.
Upgrading to a proper AT leaves you with very few options; some of the ATs are diesels, and the only mid-size SUV petrol AT is the Tata Sierra. Your option of getting a city-centric car, keeping the Taigun for highway driving, and upgrading it later makes the most sense.
The Honda Amaze, with its CVT transmission, makes the most sense as a city car. It is smooth and comfortable, taking the stress out of city driving, whilst the manual 1.0 Taigun is a solid highway car. The Taigun is due for a facelift around February–March 2026, and other new midsize SUVs, including an all-new Creta, are expected around 2027. So yes, hang on to your Volkswagen Taigun and pick up an Amaze for your city chores.

I currently own an i20 (2012-2014) Sports petrol variant and want to upgrade because it’s quite old. I use the car very infrequently, mostly weekends or occasional family outings for four, and don’t want to spend much since I already have 2-3 bikes for daily use. My budget is around ₹5 lakh; I prefer an automatic petrol car. Should I buy a used or a new car? Please suggest suitable options.

For a budget of Rs 5 lakh, there aren't many automatic new car options available.

You could opt for a Maruti Suzuki S Presso VXi AMT, which would serve your needs. But as you need to carry four family members during your occasional weekend use, we would recommend upgrading to a Maruti Suzuki Celerio 1.0 Petrol VXi AMT. It is a bit more spacious and upmarket.

However, yes, given your limited usage and need for passenger room, we would recommend checking out a used car

I am a senior citizen looking to purchase a new car with an automatic gearbox and within a budget of around Rs 5 lakh. It should be best suited for city driving and occasional highway trips to nearby cities. High safety features are a must.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso AMT is the cheapest automatic car on sale in India, which is in your budget. And while it is a very user-friendly and easy-to-drive city car, it doesn't feel confident on the highway. Yes, Maruti has upped its safety feature list by adding Electronic Stability Program (ESP); however, it still gets only 2 airbags - side and curtain airbags are missing.

Since you plan to drive on the highways regularly, you could consider picking a pre-owned, safer car from a higher segment from reputed platforms like Spinny - the used cars are not only thoroughly inspected, but the company also offers a comprehensive warranty for added peace of mind.

Please suggest an automatic car below 4 lakh.

Unfortunately, there are currently no new cars with an automatic transmission on sale under Rs 4 lakh. The most affordable automatic car in India is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, the VXI (O) AMT variant, which is priced at Rs 4.75 lakh (ex-showroom). Alternatively, you could look at the used market, where you'll find plenty of options within your budget.

I want a small car with good fuel efficiency. My budget is ₹6 lakh. I’m considering the Alto K10 and S-Presso as I want reliability and hassle-free ownership. Which one is better, or should I consider another car?

Given your requirements and your budget of ₹6 lakh, you're right, the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and S-Presso are your best options. Both of these Maruti Suzuki cars use the same engine and gearboxes, and offer the same hassle-free driving experience.
Of the two, the Alto K10 has the advantage of offering six airbags as standard across the range, while the S-Presso only gets two. However, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso offers more interior space, should you travel with passengers often.
You could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. You might only get a mid-range variant in your budget, but it offers more space and a more upmarket feel than the Alto and S-Presso.

I have a budget of ₹6-7 lakh and want a fuel-efficient car with good ground clearance and basic features like central locking and power windows.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will fit in your budget and gets a good ground clearance, along with centre locking and all four power windows. It is also compact and easy to drive in the city and has a very efficient engine.
