Hi everyone, I am a 43-year-old working professional residing in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand. I am looking to buy a secondary car for my daily office commute, which is around 30km at most per day or approximately 1,000km per month. I will be driving alone around 80 percent of the time, and this car will replace my ageing Honda Unicorn motorcycle. We already have a Tata Nexon at home, and I have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso VXi and Alto K10 VXi. Could the experts here suggest which one would be a better choice for my requirements and explain why? Also, why does the S-Presso have such low sales numbers compared to other cars in its segment? Thanks in advance!

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso would be the better choice for you. It's got slightly more ground clearance, which will be a boon for your daily commutes. Further, the S-Presso seats you slightly higher than the Alto K10, giving a better view of the road. The slightly elevated seating position would also feel closer to the Nexon that you are used to. Also, the S-Presso gives a greater sense of space inside though it's not much roomier than an Alto. In other ways, the S-Presso and Alto are the same, using the same engine, gearbox, and platform.

While the S-Presso is a good car for the money, its gawky design hasn't won over buyers, which should explain why it doesn't sell as much as the more traditional-looking Alto.

My driving requirements are approximately 75–80% city driving, 15% highway driving and 5–10% hill driving. My budget is Rs 10 lakh, but I am also looking out for offers in December and January on previous-year manufactured cars, so I can stretch it to Rs 11.5 lakh if a good deal is available. I need a car that can comfortably accommodate three adults in the rear seat, even if it feels a little cramped. It should also be capable of handling Chennai's traffic, potholes and road bumps. My priorities, in order, are safety, fuel efficiency, engine and gearbox performance, and finally, features, if the budget permits. My current preferences are: 1. Tata Altroz Creative S AMT 2. Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX M (O) 3. Skoda Kylaq Signature Manual 4. Kia Sonet HTK (O) 1.0-litre iMT Please suggest which of these cars would be the best overall choice for my requirements and rank them in order of preference, considering all the factors mentioned above.

The Mahindra 3XO RevX would be the right choice for you. It's the roomiest of the vehicles on your shortlist and the most spacious for three adults to sit at the back. Boot space isn't great but is manageable. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy, and you will appreciate the power it offers on your highway and hill drives. Performance is good, though fuel economy entirely depends on your driving style. Drive with enthusiasm and fuel economy will drop quite dramatically. The 3XO also feels tough in its build and will be comfortable over the potholes and bumps that you regularly encounter. It also helps that the 3XO has a five-star NCAP rating. If ease of use is an absolute priority, the Tata Altroz AMT makes sense.

I’m planning to buy a new car, and my annual running is around 40,000km, primarily involving highway drives and ghat sections. I have shortlisted the Kia Seltos Diesel HTX and the upcoming facelifted Toyota Innova Hycross ZX. I’m considering two approaches: either buy the Innova Hycross and keep it for the next 10 years, given its reputation for longevity and the expectation that its engine can last at least 4 lakh kilometres, or buy the Seltos, drive it for around 2 lakh kilometres over 4–5 years, sell it and upgrade to a brand-new Seltos or another car of a similar price and size. On paper, the Innova Hycross Hybrid seems like the better choice, considering its long-term reliability and features such as the Ottoman reclining seats. However, I’m concerned that I might get bored of it after four years or that it may start feeling outdated as newer technologies and features enter the market. This makes the second option appealing, as it would allow me to upgrade to a brand-new car every 4–5 years. Which approach would make more sense in the long run, considering my high annual running and ownership costs?

It seems like you're leaning towards the Kia Seltos Diesel HTX, and we think it is a good choice. The diesel engine feels adequately powered for highway usage and ghat driving, and it is likely to return respectable efficiency too. Moreover, despite being modern with all the latest tech and features, the Seltos will be substantially more affordable than the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid. So unless you need the Innova's extra space, or you frequently travel with six or seven passengers, the Kia Seltos diesel is your best bet.
