I am 6 ft 2 in tall and want to buy an SUV. I am a bit confused between the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Mahindra 7XO/Scorpio, Honda Elevate, Suzuki Victoris, Grand Vitara, Hyryder, and Skoda Kushaq. Please suggest a suitable choice based on better ride quality and comfort, for city traffic, budget around 15L, 30km daily driving, and seating for 5/7.

Do note that you will only get the base models of most of these SUVs in your budget of Rs 15 lakh (the two Mahindra cars are entirely out of your budget), so be prepared to increase your budget if you want more features or a more powerful engine. That being said, among your chosen options, the Tata Sierra is the most spacious and comfortable, and best suited for tall passengers, so that should be your choice from the five-seaters.
If you want a seven-seater, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is the best value-for-money option you could pick, and it meets all your requirements, including the budget. However, another car worth considering is the Citroen Aircross X, which comes in both 5- and 7-seat options, and is priced really well. It's spacious, comfortable and gets a punchy engine with a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox.

I wish to buy a new mid range automatic petrol SUV. Had been owner of Honda Amaze for 11 yrs. Low maintenance, less service costs, happy ownership. So planned to buy Elevate CVT but found it lagging in power. Test drove Citroën Aircross/Basalt Turbo AT, found them to be more powerful. But lack confidence to buy due to other ownership reasons. Can you suggest a Automatic SUV in range of 17 to 19 with usage of 80% Bangalore city drive?

If you are looking for something with similar performance to the Citroen Basalt/Aircross, you should consider the Volkswagen Taigun or the Skoda Kushaq with the 1.0 TSI and torque converter automatic. The facelifted Kushaq now gets an 8-speed automatic replacing the old 6-speed unit, and the Taigun will get the same when it is facelifted later this year.

The 1.0 TSI makes a healthy 115hp and 178Nm, which delivers better performance than the naturally aspirated engine in the Elevate and is on par with the Basalt. The 6-speed torque converter automatic was also smooth-shifting and very convenient to use, and we expect the 8-speed to be more of the same. With 80 percent of your driving in heavy Bengaluru traffic, this transmission will be a boon.

Prices for the facelifted Kushaq will be announced later this month, and we expect our first drive reviews to drop around the same time. Before you decide, take a test drive, of course.

I have been driving a Honda Amaze petrol for the last 10 years and am now planning to switch. I have shortlisted the Basalt X/Aircross X automatic transmission. Will it be a good option considering their good ride quality, or are there any better options available between ₹13 to 14 lakh?

Yes, the Citroen Basalt X or Aircross X would  make great upgrades from your Honda Amaze. For one, they are a size larger, and secondly, they are very well priced - although consider upping your budget very slightly to get a higher-spec automatic variant.
Both cars have excellently calibrated suspension, which gives them superb ride quality as well as sharp handling. This is only complemented by their smooth yet punchy 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and 6-speed torque converter automatic. Considering your requirements, either of these would be a great option for you.

I own a 2011 Vento 1.6 MPI. In a few years, I want to upgrade to a bigger SUV like the Kodiaq, Meridian, or a pre-owned 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan. Which one will be more reliable and offer a peaceful after-sales experience? I live in Pune, so the service network is good for most brands. If buying new, I have the Citroen C3 Aircross in mind.

Finding a genuinely good, sparingly used example of the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, or Volkswagen Tiguan isn’t always easy. These are relatively expensive SUVs, and many owners tend to keep them. If you do find a 2024 model with low kilometres, full service history and no accident record, reliability shouldn’t be a major concern. They’re still relatively new and based on proven platforms and engines.
Between the three, VW and Skoda’s dealer networks tend to be more consistent than Jeep’s when it comes to the aftersales experience. Since you’re in Pune, network strength isn’t a problem, but service attitude and technical depth do matter, especially with turbo-petrol, DSG-equipped European SUVs. On that front, the Kodiaq and Tiguan usually inspire a bit more confidence. Ultimately, though, condition, service history and how the previous owner has treated the car should be your top priority when buying pre-owned.
For peace of mind, you could also explore our partner channel Spinny, which has a good reputation for selling quality pre-owned vehicles that have been inspected and come with warranty support. That reduces risk compared to buying from an unknown individual seller.
If you’re considering a new one instead, the Citroen Aircross is a very different proposition. It’s not in the same league as the Kodiaq or Tiguan in terms of outright performance, cabin plushness or road presence. Performance, too, is not in the same league.
That said, buying new has its own advantages - full warranty, zero history risk and predictable maintenance. If you’re happy with the space and don’t mind that it’s not as premium or powerful as the larger German SUVs, it can be an easy car to live with.
One word of caution: Citroen dealer experience can vary. If you find yourself having to chase the dealership repeatedly just to get a test drive or basic information, take that as a red flag.

I’m looking for a mid-size petrol SUV with an automatic transmission for a family of five. Good driving comfort, suspension, spaciousness, and ease of maintenance are my key requirements. My budget is ₹13-15 lakh. Please advise.

For a mid-size SUV in your budget, you would mostly get base to low variants of most vehicles, so prepare to miss out on some features and equipment. However, there is one exception, which handily serves your other requirements nicely as well.
The Citroen Aircross X is exceptional value for money, offering both 5- and 7-seat layouts with lots of space for passengers and luggage. Its suspension is superbly tuned and offers possibly the best ride comfort in the segment, and its 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and pairs well with the punchy 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine.
While service costs are reasonable, Citroen's service network isn't as wide as other brands', so make sure there is a service centre close enough to you.

I am looking forward to the Citroen C3 Aircross, but am a little concerned regarding its mileage. As one of my friends said, the average of turbocharged engines is very low. They will give an average of only 10 kmpl. Is this true? What is the real-world mileage of the Citroen C3 Aircross?

The Citroen Aircross has a turbo petrol engine, so relatively lower mileage is not surprising. In our tests, the Aircross returned around 9.5 kmpl in city conditions for both the manual and automatic variants. For reference, the Kia Sonet, which is similarly priced but smaller in size, returned around 11.5 kmpl in the city, giving it an advantage of almost 2 kmpl in efficiency. The main reason for that is the Aircross’s larger size and weight.
That said, since our efficiency test was carried out in Mumbai, in cities with more free-flowing traffic, you can expect a bit more mileage from the Aircross.

My budget is within Rs 14 lakh. My first preference is a smooth, quiet, and non-bumpy ride on our roads. I do not mind having fewer tech features. I travel on both city roads and connecting village roads. Which car would be a good choice for me?

You should consider buying the Mahindra XUV 3XO. It offers good ground clearance and excellent ride quality, especially over rough roads. You will not be skimping on features either, as within your budget, you can get the AX7 petrol manual, which is very well equipped. If you want an automatic, you can opt for the AX5 variant.
If you want a larger car with a bigger boot, you can also consider the Citroen Aircross or the Basalt. In your budget, you will get the mid-variant of either of these cars, which are decently equipped. The highlight of both these cars is the fact that you get a midsize SUV for the price of a compact SUV, and their ride quality, too, is right up there with the very best in the segment.
We would also suggest waiting for another two months for the new generation Renault Duster, which is slated to launch in March. The Duster has traditionally offered excellent ride quality and strong rough-road ability.

I want to buy a 7-seater, and my choices are the Kia Carens Clavis and the Citroen Aircross X. Petrol is the only option I can choose due to NCR restrictions. The Citroen has a torque converter automatic and good ride quality, but I am concerned about its service network and long-term trust. The Citroen also offers better mileage than the Carens. My budget is around ₹17 lakh. Please suggest which one to choose. Usage will be mostly city driving, with hill trips once every quarter. Thanks.

The Kia Carens Clavis has a plusher cabin and a stronger 160hp 1.5 turbo petrol engine, which gives it better acceleration for quick overtakes in the hills and on the highway. The overall cabin is also more spacious than that of the Citroën Aircross X.
Where the Citroen scores in sheer comfort, thanks to its brilliant suspension and very well-cushioned seats. The Aircross’ 110hp 1.2 turbo petrol engine is also quite capable, and for city driving, its 6-speed torque converter is smoother than the Carens’ DCT.
Overall, the Citroen Aircross X is the better bet. It makes a great everyday car, has superb suspension for bad roads, offers adequate power for hill driving, and is significantly cheaper than the Carens, which starts at around ₹19 lakh for the DCT variants and is over your budget.

Which one will suit Delhi NCR traffic and quarterly trips to the hills better, the Carens or the Aircross X, keeping mileage and comfort in mind? The third-row seats will mostly be used for luggage. The Carens has a DCT engine, while the Aircross has a torque converter. Monthly travel is around 800-900 km. Budget is ₹17 lakh. Please suggest. Thanks.

The Kia Carens Clavis has a plusher cabin and a stronger 160hp 1.5 turbo-petrol engine, and hence has better acceleration for quick overtakes in the hills and on the highway. Also, the overall cabin is more spacious than that of the Citroen Aircross X.
Where the Citroen scores is in the sheer comfort it excels at, thanks to a brilliant suspension and very well-cushioned seats. The Aircross’ 110hp 1.2 turbo-petrol engine is also quite strong, and for city driving, the 6-speed torque converter is smoother than the Caren’s DCT.
Overall, the Aircross X is the better bet, as it makes a great everyday car, has superb suspension for bad roads, and has adequate power for the hills. Plus, the Aircross is significantly cheaper than the Carens Clavis, which, starting at around Rs. 19 lakh for the DCT variants, is actually over your budget.

I’m interested in the Citroen Aircross but am worried about the 3-cylinder engine for long-distance driving. Is this engine ethanol-safe and capable of handling fully loaded long trips?

There are many misconceptions about three-cylinder engines due to misinformation spread on social media and online forums. The fact is that a three-cylinder engine is theoretically more reliable than a four-cylinder engine because with one cylinder less, you have 25% fewer moving parts. Three-cylinder engines are also theoretically more efficient than four-cylinder engines.
The Citroen Aircross’ 1.2 turbo-petrol engine is the best 1.2-litre engine in our view, offering strong performance and good efficiency. All engines today are compatible with E20 ethanol, and manufacturers have built in greater protection for materials affected by ethanol to future-proof themselves against higher ethanol blends. The bigger worry is Citroen’s service network. Otherwise, the Aircross is a good vehicle, and you can go ahead and buy it.
