At the launch of the Tata Altroz iTurbo, the carmaker announced that it has sold over 50,000 units of its premium hatchback. The Altroz has now been on sale for exactly one year – Tata had introduced the rival to the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Volkswagen Polo on January 22, 2020.

  • Altroz sales cross 50,000 mark in 1 year
  • Altroz petrol accounts for over 90 percent of total sales

Tata Altroz sales

As per our sister publication, Autocar Professional's analysis, total sales of the Altroz from January 2020 through to end-December 2020 were 47,076 units, comprising 44,427 petrol and 2,649 diesel. This translates into average monthly sales of nearly 4,000 units, and in turn means the 50,000-unit sales milestone has been crossed within a year of launch.

At the event where the Altroz turbo-petrol was unveiled, Tata had said that they expect the Altroz iTurbo to accelerate sales by up to 10 percent. This will help the brand improve its market share in the Indian hatchback segment. In fact, Shailesh Chandra – President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “We are delighted to share that with its [the Altroz’s] introduction, in FY2021, our market share in the hatchback category has increased by 5.4 percent compared to FY2020 and we have captured 17 percent market share in the premium hatch segment. We are confident that the new Altroz range will cater to the evolving needs of the Indian customer, all while creating benchmarks in the segment.”

The Altroz is now available with three engine options – an 86hp, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol; a 90hp, 1.5-litre diesel; and a 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol. For now, the premium hatchback is only available in manual form but a DCT gearbox-equipped Altroz is in the works.
