Hello team. I’m selling my old i20 and planning to buy a new car. I’ve shortlisted the Tata Altroz, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Maruti Dzire. My priorities are an automatic transmission, good mileage, 4/5-star safety, an armrest and a rear wiper. I’m attracted to the Glanza for its styling and the UV-cut glass on the top variant. My maximum budget is ₹10.5-11 lakh on-road in Telangana. Please suggest which is best.

The Toyota Glanza is a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and the only difference between the two is the badge, some interior trim colours and the warranty. The Glanza is sold with a 3-year/1,00,000km warranty, while the Baleno gets a 2-year/40,000km warranty. The Glanza is a good option if you like the way it looks, and the UV cut glass is a must-have feature for you. However, if you are looking for a car that will hold its value better, then the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the better option, and also features UV cut class. The Tata Altroz does get you the option of a diesel engine, and a DCT automatic, which is the more sophisticated auto gearbox here. However, you could also consider the new Hyundai i20, which comes with a CVT auto or a DCT with its powerful turbo engine.

Hi, I am planning to buy an automatic car under 10 Lakh rupees. I was in a dilemma between the i20 Sportz IVT and the Tata Altroz Creative AMT. Which one would suit both city and highway driving with good fuel efficiency? Please advise.

Verified
32w

Pick the AMT version of the Tata Altroz only if fuel efficiency is extremely important to you. Do keep in mind, the AMT is quite jerky, and the drive won't be as seamless as the Hyundai i20 CVTs or as the Altroz DCA's, both of which are far smoother options. If you love the Altroz for what it is, consider spending a bit more and getting the dual-clutch automatic version for a much superior drive experience.

I'm considering the Tata Altroz and am unsure whether to opt for the Creative variant in petrol or diesel, as both are similarly priced. My driving is primarily highway-based for family getaways, and I have heard that the Altroz petrol engine is dull. Would the diesel variant offer better power and fuel efficiency for these long-distance drives?

Verified

The Altroz diesel delivers noticeably stronger performance, with higher torque that makes the driving experience far more engaging compared to the petrol variant. It also offers better fuel efficiency, making the diesel version the smarter choice, especially for highway driving.

We are a family of four, and my budget is up to Rs. 10 lakh. I am looking for a car that is safe, fun to drive, and offers good mileage. It should be comfortable for three passengers in the rear seat, have a good sound system and effective air conditioning, and provide adequate boot space. My preference is for low maintenance costs and a hassle-free service network. My usage is mainly on weekends, with approximately 60% city driving and 40% rural driving. I prefer a petrol manual transmission only. Could you please suggest an ideal family car that meets these requirements within my budget? I am also open to considering used car options.

Get the Maruti Suzuki Baleno 1.2 petrol manual. It fits three in the back better than most at this price, sips fuel, and Maruti’s service network and parts costs will keep ownership simple. For your 60% city and some rougher rural runs, it rides comfortably enough, has a light clutch and easy steering, the AC cools fast, the sound system is crisp, and the large boot swallows a weekend’s luggage without drama. It is also one of the few cars under Rs. 10 lakh that can balance space, mileage and low maintenance without feeling cheap inside. If you pick a mid variant, you’ll still get the essentials and stay within budget in most cities. However, if safety rating is your top concern, then the Tata Altroz petrol manual feels more solid, and its Harman audio is better, but it is not as light to drive in traffic, and Tata service can be patchy. In the used car space, a gently used Maruti Brezza manual keeps the same strengths and adds peace of mind.

Currently, I own a Renault Scala diesel and drive around 1,700 km per month. My budget is ₹12 lakh. Which small car offers the best suspension durability and ride quality? Please also mention the type of suspension used. My other priorities are a spacious cabin, adequate ground clearance, and good fuel efficiency.

Verified
9w

Consider the Tata Altroz diesel. It suits your high running, has good space for a small car, and its suspension feels robust. The suspension uses a simple, proven layout - front MacPherson struts with coil springs and a rear twist beam with coil springs. This type is strong and not costly to repair. Ground clearance, too, is enough for most broken roads and speed breakers. Also, the ride comfort and high-speed stability are excellent. And you're likely to appreciate its diesel's drivability and fuel efficiency, which might not be as good as the Scala's, but still much more than what most petrol cars deliver. A compact SUV alternative for similar money is the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel MX3. It uses a similar suspension setup, has a strong and refined diesel engine and has even better ground clearance and feels even tougher than the Tata Altroz. The only downside being that the Mahindra will not be as efficient as the Tata Altroz.

I’m looking to buy a diesel manual sub-4m car. My monthly run is around 1,500 km, of which 60% is in the city and 40% on highways. My priorities are punchy performance with strong low-end and mid-range, along with good ride and handling, responsive steering feedback, and a comfortable suspension setup. Please help me choose a car.

Verified
10w

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel manual. It fits your brief best because the 1.5 diesel delivers strong pull from low speeds, making city driving easier without constant downshifts, and it has a solid mid range for quick highway overtakes, while also offering a comfortable ride and well weighted steering with selectable modes to suit your preference. The Tata Altroz diesel is a good alternative if you want something smaller and easier to park with similarly strong low and mid range, and it also has a capable chassis that makes it feel confident and enjoyable to drive, along with a sportier, lower seating position. The only drawback with the Altroz is that its diesel engine is not as strong or as refined as the Mahindra car and it is not as spacious, so overall the XUV 3XO remains the better fit for your needs.

I have grand i10 for last ten years. My daily driving is 120 km and mostly on smooth highway. Now I want to buy a new car for daily commute. My budget is 12 lakhs. I want a car which gives good mileage. Good safety and good driving dynamics.

Verified

In your case, a diesel engine is a no-brainer given your high daily running. The Tata Altroz diesel would be an ideal upgrade. It is newly refreshed, gets a trusty diesel engine, 5-star safety, and planted, confidence-inspiring handling.Your commute is mostly smooth highway, so the Altroz feels steady at 100-120 km/h and the steering weights up predictably, which reduces fatigue over 120 km days. The diesel is frugal, so fewer fuel stops and its torque make mid‑range overtakes easy. A thing to note is that the diesel engine is audible at idle and there’s mild turbo‑lag below about 1,800 rpm, so quick bursts may need a downshift.Your budget allows the Accomplished S variant, which is the top of the line that is feature-packed with a 360-degree camera, wireless connectivity, sunroof, cruise control and ambient lighting, among others.

Hello Autocar Team, I am planning to buy an automatic car with an on-road budget of ₹12 lakh in Coimbatore. Around 80% of my driving will be in the city, and this car will be driven by a new license holder. I would prefer to avoid AMT gearboxes and am looking for a car that offers good safety and a smooth driving experience. I am not interested in sedans. Could you please suggest the best options for my requirements?

Verified
16w

For your requirements of a smooth, automatic, premium feel and ease of driving, we would first suggest considering the Hyundai i20 IVT. The CVT gearbox is very smooth, which makes it the easiest car to drive in city traffic, especially for a new driver. It also feels premium inside, well-equipped and well priced, making it a great first car. Hyundai’s after-sales service and ease of maintenance are also strong positives. That said, in terms of safety, the i20 scored a 3-star rating earlier, and the facelifted version hasn’t been tested yet, so that remains a bit of an unknown. If 5-star safety is your top priority, then you can consider the Tata Altroz DCA. It has a strong build and better safety credentials. The ride quality is also more comfortable, and the car feels more stable on the highway. However, the engine and gearbox are not as refined or as smooth as the Hyundai's, though it is still a better experience than an AMT.

Planning to buy an automatic hatchback under ₹11 lakh. Please advise which is the best in terms of ride, mileage, smoothness, etc.

Verified

There's actually quite a variety of automatic hatchbacks within your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and its twin, the Toyota Glanza, are well-rounded products. Good ride comfort and excellent fuel economy are highlights, and the AMT gearbox is good enough for average driving. However, gearshifts aren't the smoothest, and you'll feel this over a quick overtaking manoeuvre. If you are open to the Citroen brand, the C3 is a great option. Its 1.2-litre engine and torque converter auto gearbox combo is excellent, and ride comfort is also very good. You could also look at the Tata Altroz DCA in Creative S trim. The dual-clutch auto gearbox is very smooth and well-suited to city use. There's also a toughness to the package that gives great confidence at highway speeds. We are also fans of the smooth and polished Hyundai i20 CVT, but the Sportz(O) that fits your budget isn't an ideal choice as it misses out on the safety of a rear wiper. Finally, if you have the option to install an EV charger at home or office, the Tata Tiago EV is also an option to consider. Being all-electric, it's super smooth and very refined. However, it works best as a city car.

Hi, I am looking to travel across India by road. I am looking for a bigger, spacious, reliable, fuel-efficient (maybe hybrid) vehicle for 5 people. I would like it to have ADAS Level 2 and good suspension for rural roads and highways. The budget is approximately 8-9 lakhs. Please suggest.

Verified
28w

At your budget of Rs 8-9 lakh, there are not many cars that meet your requirements. For a start, there are no hybrids at this price point. At this price, you will only get compact cars, so fitting 5 people (presumably with luggage) over long distances will not be comfortable. Plus, ADAS features are also not available at this price point.Your best option is a large hatchback, such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which offers a fuel-efficient petrol engine and can fit 5 people. You can also consider the Tata Altroz, which is available with a diesel engine option and has tough suspension. There are some compact SUVs available in your budget, but only the base models. You could also consider buying a used car, in which case you will get a larger vehicle in your budget, but it won't have the latest tech like a hybrid powertrain or ADAS. Check out Spinny for vetted and verified used vehicles.

The Tata Altroz measures 3,990mm in length, 1,755mm in width, 1,523mm in height, and 2,501mm in wheelbase. It's slightly shorter in length and wheelbase compared to rivals, but wider and taller than most of them.
