Questions you may find useful
I am looking to buy a new EV for my daily office commute, which is roughly 100 km round-trip. My current ride is a Toyota Innova Crysta. While it is a reliable workhorse, I find it increasingly tiring for daily use. The constant body roll, low-speed bounciness, and typical ladder-frame wobble over uneven roads are wearing me down. I want to switch to a smooth, refined electric SUV. My usage will be a mix of self-driving and being chauffeur-driven. My absolute top priorities are: Ride Comfort & Stability: I need a car that glides over bad roads, handles speed bumps cleanly, and minimises vertical movement/head-toss. I want to avoid the wobbliness of the Crysta at all costs. Cabin Space: Generous legroom, good under-thigh support, and a spacious cabin environment are highly important. I am currently considering four upcoming/recently launched options, but I am torn between them: Mahindra XEV 9e, Mahindra XEV 9s, Tata Sierra EV, Tata Harrier EV. Given my 100 km daily run, battery efficiency is a factor, but comfort overrides everything else. Which of these four will offer the most stable, plush, and fatigue-free ride for someone moving away from an Innova Crysta? I do not intend to sell the Innova Crysta, as I want to keep it for the airport and family runs for long distance.
For your 100 km daily commute, with comfort and stability as the absolute priorities, the Tata Sierra EV is the top recommendation. This Tata car is built on Tata's Gen 2 EV architecture, which is a dedicated electric platform with a flat floor and a long wheelbase. This gives it a very stable, planted feel on the road, and the suspension is tuned for comfort, with a soft, absorbent ride that deals with bad roads, speed bumps and undulations far better than a ladder-frame vehicle like the Crysta. The Sierra EV also has a spacious cabin with generous legroom, good under-thigh support and a wide, airy feel, making it a genuinely comfortable place to spend long hours, whether you are driving or being driven. Also, its 75 kWh battery pack gives it a strong range, so you don't have to worry about recharging even on long trips. The Mahindra XEV 9e and 9s are both strong products, but they are not quite as plush or as settled. The Harrier EV has a redesigned floor pan, but it still doesn't feel as spacious or airy inside as the Sierra. The Sierra also has a larger boot compared to the Harrier. Given that you are keeping the Crysta for airport runs and long-distance family trips, the Sierra EV is the best fit for your daily commute. It is the most comfortable, the most stable and the most fatigue-free option of the four.
Sir, how is the rear suspension and ride quality of the Mahindra XEV 9e Pack One and Two? I tested the Pack Three and found the rear seat very boat-like with too much movement both vertically and sideways, which can get nauseating for rear-seat passengers. Is the suspension setup in Pack One and Two any better? Should I instead go for the Harrier EV 75 RWD if I want better ride quality, or should I wait for the Sierra EV? I want an EV bigger than the Nexon, but I do not like the Curvv EV and was thinking of avoiding Mahindra because of the suspension. I tried the Nexon EV and new Punch EV and found their rear suspension much better than the XEV 9e and even the eVitara. Please guide.
What you felt in the Mahindra XEV 9e Pack Three is a fair observation. The XEV 9e does have a softer suspension tune, and for some rear seat passengers, that can translate into a floaty, slightly boat-like vertical movement over undulations, which can feel uncomfortable or even nauseating if you are sensitive to that kind of motion. As far as we know, there is no major suspension hardware difference between Pack One, Two and Three that fundamentally changes this character, so we would not expect the lower variants to feel significantly different in this regard. If rear seat ride quality and body control are a major priority, the Tata Harrier EV is the better option right now. It feels more tied down, composed and generally better controlled from the rear, without that excessive floatiness. If you still want to stay with Mahindra, the XEV 9e actually feels more balanced in this respect and does not have the same exaggerated bouncy character as the XEV 9S.That said, since you are clearly particular about ride quality and already like how Tata’s EVs are tuned, we would absolutely suggest waiting for the Tata Sierra EV as well, especially since its launch is right around the corner. It should sit in that sweet spot above the Nexon EV in size while potentially offering the kind of more settled suspension setup you seem to prefer.
Hello, I am planning to purchase a new car and would appreciate your recommendations based on my requirements. We are a family of four, and all members are relatively tall, with heights ranging from 174 cm to 194 cm. Therefore, cabin space, seating comfort and ease of ingress and egress are important considerations. My usage will be primarily city-oriented, with the possibility of using the car for office commutes along Bengaluru's Outer Ring Road and occasional highway journeys. Around 70% of the usage will be for office commuting, while the remaining 30% will be for personal use, including occasional long-distance trips. My typical driving pattern involves approximately 400 km of office commuting every week, along with an additional 300–500 km of personal or long-distance travel once a month. My key priorities are excellent ride comfort, strong safety features, well-tuned suspension for both daily commutes and highway driving, a spacious cabin that can comfortably accommodate tall occupants, and reasonable maintenance and ownership costs. The car will be purchased under my company's car lease policy, which permits only electric vehicles. Based on my initial research, I feel the Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and Kia Clavis EV could be suitable options. However, I would appreciate an expert opinion on which of these models would best meet my requirements and whether there are any other electric vehicles worth considering. I am particularly interested in understanding which option offers the best balance of ride comfort, safety, practicality, maintenance costs and overall ownership experience. I would also prefer to stick with one of the major established manufacturers to ensure reliable after-sales support and predictable maintenance costs. Additionally, since the long-term resale value of EVs remains uncertain, I would like to keep the overall cost of ownership reasonable, taking the benefits of my company's car lease policy into account. I look forward to your recommendations. Thank you!
Go for the Kia Carens Clavis EV as it will suit your particular requirements well and has a well-tuned electric powertrain that delivers well on performance, refinement and an easy and fuss-free drive. Since all of you in your family are tall, the extra space inside would come in handy, and the third row would be useful to carry luggage for your family of four on your outstation travels you do every month. The Clavis is longer than the Tata Sierra EV and the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara; however its not something that would be cumbersome in the city and moreover the benefits the Clavis EV powertrain offers more than make up for this. Power delivery is smooth and natural and the regen braking is really well calibrated and it is well equipped too with all sensible features that you would appreciate during everyday motoring. The Sierra EV would offer you a more lively and thrilling performance but since this is not a key requirement we would leave this option out for you. The eVitara too as passenger space inside is tight, especially at the rear and the boot is very small too. On the whole the Kia will prove to be a sensible, easy to use no nonsense EV and the most well rounded of the lot.
I am planning to buy either Kia Seltos HTX ivt or Tata Sierra EV empowered 75. Since there is concern on petrol availability/pricing and ethanol blending in the future, which option would be better for our monthly usage of around 500km within the city which will also include 2 trips outside the city every year. If I take Seltos, I am concerned about its resale value in 5 to 10 years and more for an EV as it is more expensive as compared to Deltos and its infrastructure problems. What do you suggest?
Go for the Kia Seltos HTX IVT. Your usage pattern of around 500km a month in the city with only two outstation trips a year does not justify the premium of the Tata Sierra EV Empowered 75. The Seltos IVT is a smooth, refined and reliable petrol automatic that will handle your city driving effortlessly, and Kia’s service network and ownership experience are strong. Concerns about petrol availability and ethanol blending are largely overblown - E20-compliant engines are designed to handle the fuel, and there is no official roadmap beyond E20 at this stage. The Sierra EV is a very impressive product with a premium cabin and strong range, but it is significantly more expensive and you will not recover that premium through fuel savings at your level of usage. The Seltos is the more sensible and cost-effective choice for your requirements.
I want to buy a rugged electric vehicle with a minimum average range of 500 km below Rs. 36 lakh (on-road).
Rugged electric SUVs under Rs. 36 lakh on-road include the Mahindra XEV 9S, XEV 9E, Tata Harrier EV, and Tata Sierra EV. While none will comfortably deliver an average real-world range of over 500km, the Mahindra EVs are likely to come close to that number on accout of their more efficient electric powertrain and larger battery. They also offer more tech, and thanks to their light steering and tight turning radius, they're surprisingly easy to maneuvre in the city. If you need a seven-seater, get the XEV 9S, else you can pick the XEV 9E.Pick the Tata Sierra EV for its relatively compact size, impressive road presence, and spacious interior. The Sierra EV and Harrier EV get a 75kWh battery, but because the Sierra EV is lighter, its real-world range is likely to be better. Also, the Sierra EV is tough and well-built, and will be relatively more affordable than the other EVs listed here. So value-wise, it is the better car.
