I am planning to sell my Mahindra XUV500 as it is nearing the end of its registration validity in Delhi NCR, and I want to buy a 5-seater SUV under ₹10 lakh. My preference is for a fuel-efficient car as my daily running is around 100 km, but it should also be spacious enough for five people. Since fuel efficiency is a priority, I am open to both CNG and diesel cars. My usage will be 70% city and 30% highway, mostly within Delhi NCR. I have narrowed my choices to the Maruti Brezza CNG, Tata Nexon CNG, Kia Sonet Diesel, and Maruti Fronx CNG. Please help me evaluate which would be the better option. I am also open to any other better option if available.

The Maruti Brezza CNG and Fronx CNG will be more fuel efficient than the Nexon iCNG, and their clutch and gearbox make them friendlier to drive, too. The Brezza is due for a facelift in the coming weeks, so you might want to wait for that to arrive. 

The Kia Sonet diesel will feel punchier to drive (than the CNG options listed above), while being very efficient too. Also, by opting for a diesel, you won't need to wait in long queues to refill CNG. Even the Sonet is due for a generation update, which is likely to be launched this year. 

Another option you could consider is the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel MX2, which is more spacious than a Sonet. Its ride-handling balance is very impressive; the Sonet, however, has an edge in terms of fuel efficiency.

Within a budget of around ₹12 lakh (could extend some), I want to buy a petrol manual car which is fun to drive, reliable and will not be so heavy on my pocket for fueling and maintenance. My monthly usage is around 400km, mostly city and occasional road trips. Which car will you suggest?

You can consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor in their top turbo petrol manual variants. The engine, despite being turbocharged, has hardly any turbo lag and offers good punch. It also comes with a light clutch and a slick gearbox, which makes it easy to drive in the city. Even on an open road or around a ghat section, both these cars are surprisingly fun to drive, and over bad roads, the suspension delivers a comfortable ride as well. For a turbo petrol engine, efficiency is also quite impressive. Overall, there is actually not much to fault here.
If you want something that feels a bit more premium, you can look at the Skoda Kylaq, the Signature+ MT variant. The Kylaq is a fun car to drive, but the clutch is heavier, and you will feel more turbo lag. It will also not be as efficient as the Fronx turbo petrol, and the peace of mind ownership experience may not be as strong.

My daily driving is around 20 km in a small city and nearby villages, and my budget is Rs 12-14 lakh. I prefer a car with a powerful engine. Which car would you recommend?

There are a couple of options that you can consider. We've listed the highlights for each.

1) Skoda Kylaq: Punchy engine, fun handling. Rear seat space is tight, though

2) Mahindra XUV 3XO petrol: Strong engine, good ride comfort. Boot space is limited

3) Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo/ Toyota Taisor Turbo: Strong engine. Reliability and hassle-free ownership experience 

4) Citroen C3: Strong engine. Feels a bit basic, and the service network isn't very large.

Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy the Hyundai Venue facelift model, but am unsure whether I should go with the petrol or diesel automatic. I prefer an automatic only, and my monthly usage is around 1,000 km, mostly city driving with occasional highway trips.

For your monthly usage, petrol makes more sense. The new Hyundai Venue is a good choice, and its 1.0-litre TGDi engine works well with the DCT. However, you may notice the occasional hesitation from the DCT.
Alternatively, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with the Boosterjet engine and automatic combination, or the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI automatic. Both these cars have torque converter automatics, which shift more smoothly than a DCT and are therefore better suited to slow urban traffic.
Do take a test drive of all the cars before making your decision.

I am planning to buy a car on-road around 10-10.5 lakh. My drive is less than 200km per month, with occasional highway drives. I want a low-maintenance car that doesn't require money even if it is not being driven or kept still, as I mostly use a two-wheeler. I live in Chandigarh. A few options that I am considering are Baleno, Kia Sonet, Exter, Fronx, and Punch. All car agencies are available near my house.

Since you mostly use your two-wheeler and the car is only for occasional and limited use, we recommend getting a compact SUV, as at least it will be a bit more enjoyable on your highway drives. Of these shortlisted cars, we would recommend either the Kia Sonet or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, as they both offer a relatively strong 1.0-litre turbo-petrol option. which will be beneficial on the highway, where the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines may feel a little out of breath.
Both cars are relatively reliable, although historically Maruti has had the advantage in this area, with lower maintenance costs overall. We don't recommend leaving any car for too long without driving it, as that would lead to issues and consequently expenses. This should preferably be done at least once a week, even for a short drive around the block.

I want to buy a new car and keep it for a lifetime. My budget is Rs 10-12 lakh. It should perform well in hilly terrain and I do not need features like a sunroof or other sophisticated electronics. I only want a good AC and, if possible, a good sound system. Which car would be the best choice?

If you are looking for a car that will last you a lifetime, we would recommend you go for a Maruti Suzuki car. The brand has a reputation for reliability and low maintenance costs. In your budget, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine. 

The turbocharged engine has enough grunt to tackle hilly terrain, and ground clearance is better than that of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. It’s based on the AC is superb, and it has all the essential features you might need, without a sunroof.

Hi, I’m using a Ford EcoSport AT petrol. I’m very happy with the car’s build quality, handling, and performance, but I’m concerned about the mileage. In Bangalore city, I get about 8 km/l, and on the highway it’s about 14 km/l. I want to upgrade to a similar SUV with greater mileage (over 20 km/l), good safety, and durability, costing between ₹10 L and ₹15 L on-road. Please suggest suitable options.

Unfortunately, there's no petrol automatic compact SUV today that will achieve anywhere near 20kpl in the real world, in the city or on the highway. The most efficient petrol compact SUVs are the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor

If you want something more spacious, consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, though it is slightly less efficient. If you want more efficiency still, though, consider a diesel compact SUV like the Hyundai Venue or Kia Sonet. They are the smoothest and most efficient in the segment, and are more likely to get close to or surpass 20kpl.

I am using Alto for 18 years. I want to upgrade to AMT car with 10-12 lakhs budget. Mostly city ride with occasional highway trips. I like smooth ride with better road visibility. Short listed Amaze, Fronx etc. Please suggest choices

Even though you were thinking of an AMT, the Honda Amaze actually comes with a CVT automatic, which is significantly smoother and more refined than a traditional AMT which the Maruti Suzuki Fronx comes with. From a city driving perspective, the seamless nature of the CVT makes everyday traffic much more effortless and relaxed, especially compared to AMT gearboxes that can feel jerky in stop-and-go conditions.

On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx scores highly on practicality and ride comfort. Its SUV-like seating position gives you better road visibility, the cabin feels more spacious, and the rear seats fold flat when you need to carry larger luggage. The Fronx also generally feels more comfortable over rough urban roads and highways compared to the Amaze.

If your priority is the smoothest possible automatic experience for city traffic, the Amaze’s CVT makes it a very easy and stress-free car to live with. But if you value better ride comfort, higher seating position, more space and everyday practicality, then the Fronx is the more well-rounded choice

I am 72 years old. I have driven a Maruti 800, Esteem, Honda City, Civic, Jazz, and now an i20 (all manuals). I want to purchase a new car as my i20 is completing 15 years. My wife also drives occasionally. My monthly usage is about 200-300 km of city driving. I want a comfortable car that my wife can also drive. My options are Honda Amaze, Toyota Fronx, and i20 (all manuals). Please suggest which car to go for.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx would serve you well. The car has an SUV-like higher riding stance, and this means getting in and out is easy, and it offers you a good view outside. 

The controls, like the steering and clutchcare also light, and it makes for a relaxed drive. Ride quality is also very good, and we would suggest you skip the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine and opt for the 1.2-litre unit. It delivers sufficiently for everyday motoring and is also very refined, and costs a good deal less than the turbo versions.

Confused between Punch AMT and Fronx AMT. First-time buyer, need an automatic car only. City vs highway usage is 60:40. Kindly suggest in terms of reliability, as I plan to keep this car for at least 10 years.

The Tata Punch has just got a facelift and is pretty up to date in terms of features and tech for its class. It has a larger boot than the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, but its cabin is smaller, and rear seat space is cramped in comparison.
The Fronx's 1.2-litre naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder is smoother and nicer to drive than the Punch's 1.2 three-cylinder motor. Also, from a long-term reliability standpoint, the Fronx, backed by Maruti-Suzuki's reputation for reliability and good service, is a better choice.
