Exterior Design And Engineering

8

The Clavis sticks to the Carens silhouette when it comes to the design but with a fresh face. The most notable change is up front where the LED headlamps get a revised design featuring the LEDs stacked in an ice-cube like housing like we’ve seen on the Syros. The DRLs are now sharper and extend down into the bumper while the bumper itself is sharper and cleaner. The grille is slimmer now and overall there has been no change to the width of the car. Over to the side the wheels are new and also bigger in size at 17-inch. The design is sharp and gives the Clavis some extra height to boast. Wheelbase is identical and the lines have been carried over. At the rear the LED taillamps are conjoined with a thick light bar giving it the perception of a wider car. The bumper is sleeker like the front and there is a stop lap on the mini spoiler up top. Overall. It looks like an evolved Carens which is exactly what it was intended to do.

Interior Space And Comfort

Like the Carens, the Clavis can also be had as a 6 seater with captain chairs for the middle row or 7 seater that features a bench. The front seats are large and supportive and also hey electric control for the driver. Height adjust however, is manual. The passenger seat misses out on power adjust but both front seats get ventilation. The dashboard has also been revised while the blue and beige theme is carried over. You’ll also notice the new steering wheel that is also seen on the Syros and the switchgear feels high quality. In the middle row of the 6 seater, the seats are comfy, can be moved forward and backward along with a fair amount of recline. The new bit however is the addition of a panoramic sunroof that opens up the cabin. As a result the AC vents have been repositioned on near the door grab handles. There is also a boss mode that allows the middle row passenger to move the front passenger seat to elevate more room. Getting into the third row is also very easy courtesy the electric one touch tumble on the left rear seat. The third row is spacious for two adults and also gets type C ports for charging and AC vents. Backrests are adjustable and one can come a comfy spot for a few hours. With three rows up, the boot is impressive at 216-litres and there is some more space under the boot floor too.
The spare wheel sits flush under the car.

Performance And Refinement

7

The Carens Clavis gets multiple powertrain options. The best one arguably is the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with 160hp mated to a 7-speed DCT. It’s powerful enough and while linear, never struggles for grunt. The dual-clutch automatic can be controlled via the paddle shifters too.
There is also a 1.5-litre diesel with a 6-speed manual and automatic which will be preferable for regular long distance drivers. As for the enthusiasts, the Clavis gets a 6-speed manual for the turbo-petrol engine. Gearshifts are slick and the clutch is well balanced making it an enjoyable experience. The drive modes further allow the driver to customise the powertrain performance with Sport being the most responsive and Eco being the most efficient.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8

Official claimed economy for the 1.5 petrol is about 15.34 kpl, the lowest among the Clavis powertrains, but because it encourages an easy-going driving style, real-world efficiency should be respectable for daily commuting.

The broader Clavis range — including turbo-petrol DCT and diesel — officially returns up to about 16.66 kpl (DCT) and higher figures with diesel variants. These numbers should satisfy families seeking a balance of efficiency and performance in a three-row MPV.

Ride Comfort And Handling

7

The suspension of the Clavis has been tweaked compared to the Carens but it retains the character with a soft setup that takes on the bumps rather well. The bigger wheels let in some thuds at low speeds, but overall it remains a comfy ride. As for handling , the Clavis does not like to attack corners. There is a fair bit of body roll in tight bends and it is best to drive it sedately.

Features And Safety

9

The Clavis takes over the already well-equipped Carens and adds another layer of plushness. The 12.3 inch touchscreen and 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster sit flush in a single panel. The touchscreen is loaded with tech and gets all the essentials like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Sadly, this isn’t wireless. It also gets in-built navigation, voice assist, a BOSE sound system, and an air purifier along with a crisp 360 degree camera.
Safety is also impressive with 6 airbags with ABS and EBD along with ESC. The big new addition is the level 2 ADAS that works well and can be manually controlled.

Value For Money

7

Priced between Rs 11.49 lakh to 21.49 lakh the Clavis offers a wide array of variants for different budgets. It is only slightly more expensive than the Carens which will continue to be on sale in a lower trim, presumably for fleet operators. The Clavis will aim to take the baton from the Carens and bring in more audiences to the showroom for its updated character.
It remains a well-rounded, practical MPV for those who want a family car that is feature rich.

Kia Carens Clavis FAQs

Space in the third row of the Kia Carens Clavis is adequate for two adults. Convenience is enhanced here with the presence of USB ports and AC vents.

For owners whose driving is mainly in city conditions, the naturally aspirated petrol engine with the CVT gearbox is the one to go for. The diesel automatic is best suited for those who do a lot of highway runs

With three rows up, you only get 216 litres of boot space, which is enough for four soft bags. Folding the third row seats frees up more space.

Under full load of passengers, the petrol and diesel engines of the Carens Clavis lack punch, hence overtaking and driving uphill will require planning.

No, the Carens Clavis is positioned as a more premium offering with upmarket looks and more features, in contrast to the Carens, which is targeted towards budget and fleet MPV buyers.

I am planning to buy a new 7-seater and am confused between the Kia Carens Clavis and Maruti Ertiga, both with naturally aspirated petrol engines. I do not like the new air-conditioning setup in the Ertiga. Could you advise on the Carens Clavis in terms of mileage, reliability, and long-term service costs?

Verified

The Kia Carens Clavis is a great 7-seater. It is very spacious, and even tall adults can sit in the last row without any issue. The cabin feels very premium, with high-quality materials used, and even the lower variants offer impressive standard equipment, which makes the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol versions excellent value for money. The 1.5L petrol engine is smooth and refined, and in our tests, it accelerated quickly than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, indicating better drivability too. This engine is shared with the Carens, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Verna, and it has been quite reliable so far. Service and maintenance costs are also on par with, or even lower than, its rivals.

I’m planning to buy either the Kia Carens Clavis or the Hyundai Alcazar. Please advise which one would be better.

Verified

Assuming you’re considering these two models because they offer a third row of seats, the Kia Carens Clavis would be the better choice. This Kia car offers easier access to the third row thanks to its electric one-touch tumble function, and space and comfort at the back are superior. Carens Clavis and Hyundai Alcazar share their turbo-petrol and diesel engines, so there isn’t much difference in performance.

I currently own a 2016 Hyundai i20 Elite Sportz and am planning to upgrade to an SUV, but I am a bit confused. My budget is Rs. 20 lakh. I am looking for a reliable engine, low maintenance costs, and decent mileage. Since my family consists of six members, I am particularly interested in a 7-seater. Would the Tata Safari be a good option, or should I consider other alternatives?

Verified
•3d

With a family of six and a Rs 20 lakh budget, the Carens Clavis is worth considering before the Safari. It offers genuinely usable space across all three rows, a comfortable ride and a proven 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. For a buyer prioritising reliability, low maintenance and reasonable running costs, it is a more natural fit.The Safari is the more SUV-like choice, with a spacious cabin, good ride comfort and strong highway manners. Although the Safari itself has not been tested, the Harrier uses the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and returned just 6.17kpl in the city and 12.49kpl on the highway in our testing. The Safari is heavier, so expectations of fuel economy should be realistic. The diesel is more efficient than the petrol, but it is not particularly frugal either, especially in city use.The Clavis therefore makes more sense if mileage and running costs are important. The Safari becomes more attractive if you specifically want the larger SUV experience, higher seating position and stronger highway character.

I am planning to buy a 7-seater car and am confused between the Kia Carens Clavis HTX (O) Petrol DCT and the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX5 Diesel. My confusion is mainly around a few points. The XUV 7XO has better looks and more power than the Clavis, while the Clavis offers better third-row space and a more spacious cabin. I do not have a very high annual running either. With my current car, I drive around 12,000-14,000km a year, including both city and highway driving, with occasional hill trips. This has left me confused about whether I should opt for a diesel or petrol. The XUV 7XO petrol is also not known for particularly good mileage, which makes the decision even more difficult. With the diesel option, I am also concerned about potential DPF-related issues, especially given my relatively low annual running. Since the car will primarily be driven in NCR, there is also some uncertainty around the applicability of BS6 diesel vehicles when GRAP Stage 4 restrictions are in force, as government regulations can change. Another concern is the DCT transmission. I have heard about DCTs facing heating issues in bumper-to-bumper traffic, although I am not sure how significant this issue is with the Carens Clavis. During my test drive, I also felt that the Clavis seemed somewhat underpowered in Normal mode, particularly when starting from a standstill. I had to press the accelerator pedal quite hard to get it moving more quickly. Is this simply a characteristic of the DCT and its calibration, or could it be specific to the particular test-drive car? I would really appreciate any suggestions or experiences that could help me clear up these doubts before making a decision. Thanks in advance.

Go for the Kia Carens Clavis HTX (O) Petrol DCT. Your annual running of 12,000-14,000km with a mix of city, highway and occasional hill drives is pretty healthy actually, but given your other concerns like DPF regeneration and NCR policies, petrol is the safer long-term choice. A turbo petrol gives you the punch you need out on the highway and in the hills, while also the benefits of a petrol engine that you're looking for. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is the more powerful and more rugged SUV, but the Clavis is the better family car. It has a more usable third row, a more spacious and practical cabin, and a more comfortable ride for everyday use. On the DCT, yes, it can feel a bit hesitant at low speeds and in bumper-to-bumper traffic, but Kia’s DCT is one of the better ones in the market, and it is not a deal-breaker. The slight lag you felt in Normal mode is more to do with the car’s tuning than the gearbox itself. Switch to Sport mode and it feels much more responsive. The Clavis is not as powerful as the XUV 7XO, but it is quick enough for family use and much easier to live with in the long run. And as you pointed out, the heavier, more powerful XUV 7XO petrol is is nowhere near as efficient as the Clavis.

I need an SUV with minimum 470 liters of boot space and manual transmission where I need more than 12 years with minimum complexity turbo petrol engine (NA is better) and budget is on-road price 22 lacs max. Can you suggest me at least 2 cars ?

Consider the Honda Elevate. It is a naturally aspirated petrol SUV with a manual gearbox, simple mechanicals and strong long-term ownership prospects. This Honda car is a good all-rounder, with a large boot (458 litres), a spacious cabin and Honda’s reputation for reliability. If you want an even larger boot, consider getting a three-row vehicle and keeping the third row folded. If you are open to this, consider the Kia Carens Clavis turbo-petrol manual or the Maruti Suzuki XL6. Both are spacious, comfortable and have bigger boots than mid-size SUVs. Kia and Maruti Suzuki also have strong reputations for aftersales service, so they should serve you well over 12 years.
