Kia Carens, Carens Clavis CNG specs, launch timeline announced

Kia has officially announced specifications for the CNG-powered Carens and Carens Clavis MPVs on the sidelines of the Sorento launch. Both MPVs will be available with a factory-fitted CNG kit with a 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated engine, and will be offered with a 60-litre CNG tank positioned in the boot. Kia has long expressed its intent to enter India’s growing CNG segment, and this officially marks their entry into this space. Prices for the Carens and Carens Clavis with factory-fitted CNG kit will be announced by the end of September or early October.

Kia Carens, Carens Clavis CNG specification details 

In CNG spec, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine will produce 93hp and 123Nm of torque – that’s 22hp and 21Nm less than the petrol-powered counterpart. Kia hasn’t revealed an exact fuel-efficiency figure yet, but it’s estimated to be in the range of 22-25km/kg. Kia also says the engine has been calibrated to not heavily compromise on the performance aspect.

Boot space is rated at 116-litres on the CNG models.

The 60-litre CNG tank is positioned under the boot floor, which means it takes up some boot space – it’s now down to 116-litres compared to 216-litres on the petrol-powered counterparts. Kia has also retuned the suspension and upgraded the front disc brakes to account for the additional tank weight. Notably, the underbody spare wheel has also been retained. 

On the Carens Clavis, the CNG kit will be available on the HTE and HTE (O) trims, while on the older Carens, it will be offered on the sole Premium trim. Both MPVs will only get 16-inch wheels on their respective CNG-powered versions. Interestingly, the older Carens was already offered with a CNG kit, but that came only as a dealer fitment. 

CNG will be offered only on the lower-spec trims.

Kia now joins the growing CNG space in India, which accounted for as much as 22 percent of all vehicle sales in FY2026, and was the second most popular fuel after petrol in the same period. Maruti Suzuki remains the market leader in this space, followed by Tata Motors and Hyundai. Renault and Nissan, too, will soon join this space with factory-fitted CNG kits on select models.
