The Tata Nexon EV has crossed the 2,000-unit sales milestone in India. Launched at the end of January this year, the Nexon EV – Tata Motors’ first all-electric SUV – has found an increasing number of takers, with over 1,000 units being sold in just the last three months (September – November 2020).

In a matter of 10 months – a few of which were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic – Tata Motors has sold over 2,200 units of the Nexon EV. That’s higher than even the total number of Mahindra e-Veritos sold till date (2,058 units), which has been on sale since 2016.
Sales figures for the all-electric Nexon rose slowly as the country made its way out of the lockdown, with production crossing the 1,000-unit milestone in August, and over 300 units of the Tata Nexon EV were sold every month between September and November, with most buyers opting for the fully-loaded XZ+ Lux variant. That is significantly higher than every other EV on sale in India today, including the MG ZS EV, which averages sales of around 100 units every month.
How the Tata Nexon EV’s price makes a difference
At present, the Tata Nexon EV is the country’s most affordable electric SUV, with the range starting at Rs 13.99 lakh, and going up to Rs 15.99 lakh for the top-spec XZ+ Lux trim. It has no real rivals to speak of at this time – the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG’s ZS EV are bigger and operate in a higher price bracket. There’s the Tata Tigor EV, which has a lower starting price than the Nexon EV, but it has a significantly lower range and costs a whole lot more than the internal combustion-engined version.
More interestingly, the Nexon EV isn’t that much more expensive than the standard Nexon. The most expensive, non-EV Nexon is the dual-tone Nexon diesel-AMT, which, at Rs 12.70 lakh, costs only Rs 1.3 lakh less than the entry-level Nexon EV. On the road in Delhi, the Nexon diesel AMT’s price – Rs 14.91 lakh – even exceeds the Nexon XM EV’s price, which is Rs 14.75 lakh.
If you were to factor in the Rs 1.5 lakh subsidy the Delhi government is handing out on electric PVs at this time (applicable to the first 1,000 registrations only), the Nexon EV ends up becoming significantly easier on the pocket in comparison. Add to that the novelty factor, lower operating costs and the image of a status symbol EVs presently have to offer, and it’s clear to see why the all-electric Nexon is becoming more and more popular.
For the uninitiated, the Tata Nexon EV gets a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers an electric motor that makes 129hp and 245Nm of torque. Using a DC fast charger (compatible with CCS2) can help quick-charge the Nexon EV from 0-80 percent in just 1 hour. However, using a standard 15A AC charger, it will take between 8-9 hours to reach a full charge. ARAI-certified range for the Nexon EV stands at 312km.
