Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara teaser

Ahead of its global debut on July 20, 2022, Maruti Suzuki has begun sharing glimpses of the all-new Grand Vitara. Bookings for the midsize SUV, which will sit above the new Brezza, have opened at Nexa outlets.

  • Teasers show glimpses of new Maruti Grand Vitara
  • Will be built by Toyota in Karnataka
  • Expected to go on sale by late August

Maruti Grand Vitara: distinct Suzuki styling elements

The Grand Vitara is a sister model to the Toyota Hyryder and will be built at the latter's Bidadi plant in Karnataka. In a series of teasers released by Maruti, we can see the final design of the fifth-gen Grand Vitara SUV, with its unique design elements that will give it a distinct identity compared to its Toyota cousin.

Up front is a wide grille with chrome and piano black inserts, similar to the new Ertiga. The Maruti Grand Vitara will have a squarish split headlamp set-up with LED projectors and with its three-part LED daytime running lamps, the styling seems to be more in-line with the Suzuki ACross SUV and the new Suzuki S-Cross, both sold overseas. This design element is also seen on the current-gen Baleno and, as we've reported earlier, is expected to be seen on more Nexa models. A chrome bar runs between the Daytime Running Lamps with the Suzuki badging placed in between.

The side profile previews a proper midsize SUV silhouette, which, too, is quite similar to the Toyota Hyryder. The Grand Vitara, however, will have distinct styling elements and unique alloy wheel design, floating roof and blackened pillars.

The rear styling is partially shown too – the tail-lamps extend on to the tailgate with three horizontally placed LED lighting elements on either side.  A prominent chrome strip runs across the width of the tailgate housing the Suzuki logo, and neatly merging with the tail-lamps. The Grand Vitara badging sits right below the logo.

Maruti Grand Vitara: Expected interior details, feature list

The interior for the upcoming fifth-gen Grand Vitara has not been revealed yet. We expect the SUV to share common elements here as well with the Toyota Hyryder with some distinct cosmetic tweaks. Key features will include a heads-up display, 360-degree camera, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a panoramic sunroof, which will be first for any Maruti product here.

Maruti Grand Vitara: powertrain, production, launch timeline

As far as engines and powertrains go, the new Grand Vitara will come equipped with mild-hybrid tech supplied by Maruti Suzuki and a full-hybrid system from Toyota. Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K15C engine with mild hybrid will be the starting point of the Grand Vitara line-up. This powertrain will also come with Suzuki’s AllGrip AWD tech.

The second engine option on offer will be Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA engine which will come with strong hybrid system and will come with an eCVT gearbox. This engine option will also have an EV mode where the vehicle can be driven for a short distance on full-electric power only.

Maruti is expected to call the full-hybrid tech as “Intelligent Hybrid”. The brand already markets its mild-hybrid tech in India as “Smart Hybrid”, seen in existing Maruti Nexa and Arena line-up.

Production for both Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder will start in August. Prices for the Maruti Grand Vitara is expected to be announced take place after the market launch of the Toyota.
