Hyundai Venue 1.2 petrol vs Maruti Brezza petrol

The Hyundai Venue and Maruti Brezza with naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engines come across as formidable options if you’re looking for a compact SUV, mainly for city driving. From the Venue’s diverse powertrain lineup, the 1.2-litre NA petrol engine is offered in its low to mid-level trims. On the other hand, the Brezza is powered solely by a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine, which is available on all trims. We’ve put both the engines through our comprehensive real-world fuel efficiency tests and stacked up their efficiency figures to find out the more frugal one.

Both the Venue and Brezza are powered by naturally aspirated (NA) engines with a displacement of 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre respectively. The Hyundai mill outputs 83hp and 115Nm, while the Maruti develops 101hp and 137Nm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, while the Brezza also offers a 6-speed AT on higher variants. Also, the Brezzas’ fuel tank is 3 litres larger than the one on the Venue. When it comes to price, the Hyundai has a more affordable price point. Because the Venue’s top trims don't offer the NA engine, prices at the top end are lower than those of the Brezza’s.

Despite the Brezza’s petrol engine producing more power than the Venue's, it also achieves better overall fuel efficiency. However, in city driving conditions, the Venue is 0.21kpl more frugal than the Brezza,  but the latter outperforms it on the highway by 0.99kpl. Also, the Brezza's tested range of 632.64km is higher than that of the Venue's 576km range. This is due to the Brezza’s 0.38kpl higher overall efficiency and 3-litre larger fuel tank in comparison to the Venue.

Autocar India’s fuel efficiency testing

Before our real-world fuel efficiency tests, we fill our test cars’ tanks to the brim and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. These cars are driven in fixed city and highway loops in and around Navi Mumbai, and we maintain certain average speeds. Throughout the tests, there is only one person in each car, running the air conditioner and other electricals, such as the audio system, indicators and wipers, when required, just like a regular user would. Periodic driver swaps further neutralise variations in driver patterns. At the end of each cycle, we calculate efficiency by refilling the tanks to capacity.

Poll of the month

What do you think about the push for ethanol blends even higher than E20 petrol?

Good move; it cuts dependence on crude oil imports
I support it as it’s a greener solution than pure petrol
I’ll accept it only if it’s cheaper than E20 petrol
I am concerned about damage to my vehicle
Not good; fuel efficiency will drop even further
