I currently drive a 2015 Hyundai Grand i10 petrol and am planning to replace it with a compact SUV. My daily driving is around 25 km with a mix of city and highway use, and I usually go on a long trip once a month. My budget is around Rs 10-15 lakh. Should I choose a petrol or diesel car for this usage, and which compact SUV would you recommend?

Your limited usage doesn’t justify a diesel, so we recommend sticking to a petrol engine. If you’re happy with the Hyundai experience, the new Venue fits your needs well. The latest generation has grown in size, and the interior is roomier than before.

Within your budget, you could opt for the HX6 variant with the turbo-petrol and DCT combination. It comes well equipped with features like a sunroof, automatic climate control and cruise control. The engine is powerful enough for your long highway tours, and the DCT works well in the city. Do take a test drive before you commit to a purchase.

I currently own two cars: a 2025 XUV700 and a 2012 Tata Vista. The Vista is now having AC issues and brake failures, so it’s time to replace it with a 5-seater. While searching for cars under ₹10 lakh, I found many petrol options, but both my dad and I are diesel engine lovers, so we decided to increase our budget to ₹12 lakh. In that range, we considered: Tata Nexon - high-end model (but we’ve had customer and service issues with Tata before) Mahindra XUV 3X0 - MX2 Pro variant or base variant Hyundai Venue - 1.5 MT diesel variant Kia Sonet - base diesel variant Finally, my dad and I had a dramatic idea to get a Mahindra Thar RWD. Is that okay for comfortable city use and short-range driving, or should I consider other diesel cars under ₹12 lakh? Please suggest.

Yes, you are correct, there are very few diesel options in the lower segment today. From your shortlist, we would recommend the Hyundai Venue. The diesel engine is refined and smooth, and is coupled to a torque convertor gearbox, which is the smoothest type of autobox to have, thus you will appreciate this in the city traffic. The powertrain also delivers a good balance of performance and efficiency. As for the Mahindra Thar, we would not recommend this for you, as you are primarily looking for a comfortable city car, and the Thar ride is far too bumpy over bad city streets, and refinement levels will also not be as good as the Venue.

Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy the Hyundai Venue facelift model, but am unsure whether I should go with the petrol or diesel automatic. I prefer an automatic only, and my monthly usage is around 1,000 km, mostly city driving with occasional highway trips.

For your monthly usage, petrol makes more sense. The new Hyundai Venue is a good choice, and its 1.0-litre TGDi engine works well with the DCT. However, you may notice the occasional hesitation from the DCT.Alternatively, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with the Boosterjet engine and automatic combination, or the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI automatic. Both these cars have torque converter automatics, which shift more smoothly than a DCT and are therefore better suited to slow urban traffic.Do take a test drive of all the cars before making your decision.

I am planning to buy a second car for office commuting with an automatic gearbox. Driving will be 90 % in the city, point A to point B, with about 12,000 km per year. I want a car with good suspension, comfortable ride, decent mileage, and long-term reliability within ₹15 lakh. I have decided between the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT and the Hyundai Venue HX5 Diesel AT. Please suggest which is the better option, or if there are suitable alternatives.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT is a petrol-automatic, while the Hyundai Venue is a diesel-automatic. Thus, you will likely spend less on fuel with the Hyundai. However, since your driving is 90% in the city and you are looking for a good suspension system, we would lean towards the Maruti Brezza. The ride is nice and plush at city speeds, soaking up bumps and ruts easily. The Venue, on the other hand, still has a slight underlying firmness to its ride. Further, since your driving is mainly in the city, you could face issues with the DPF filter clogging or needing to run a regeneration cycle now and then. Especially if your drives are less than 40 to 50 odd kms and at speeds below 50 kph..
