I am confused between the Tata Harrier and XUV 7XO. My yearly running is around 6,000- 7,000 km. I am also confused between the petrol and diesel versions of each model. My budget is Rs 25-30 lakh, plus or minus. My main concerns are service, reliability and maintenance costs. Will the price difference between petrol and diesel offset my yearly running costs?

With a yearly running of 6000-7,000 km, diesel does not make financial sense. The price premium for the diesel engine will take too long to recover at your usage, and modern petrol engines are efficient enough for this kind of running. Between the Tata Harrier and XUV 7XO, the Mahindra car is the one we recommend. It offers a more refined ownership experience, a more polished cabin and a better overall balance between comfort and driving dynamics. Mahindra’s service network is also strong, and the 7XO has a good track record of reliability. The Tata Harrier is a very capable SUV with excellent ride comfort, but Tata’s service consistency can still be variable depending on location. Go for the XUV 7XO petrol automatic. It will be the most sensible and satisfying long-term ownership choice for your usage and budget.

Hi Autocar, I am currently using a 2019 Mahindra XUV300 diesel, and I have driven 2,50,000km so far. We are now planning to buy an EV. My daily usage would be around 100km (if I use city roads), 200km (if highway). We also go on a 3,000km road trip across South India every quarter, and once every year we drive 6,000- 7,000 km to North India. I am from Hyderabad, and I am considering the Tata Harrier EV, Tata Sierra EV and Mahindra XEV 9S. Please suggest whether an EV will really work for me. If yes, which one should I choose? If not, which car would suit my usage better? Thanks.

Given your usage pattern, an electric car is not the right choice for you. Your daily running of 100- 200 km is well within the comfort zone of modern EVs, but your quarterly 3,000km South India road trips and annual 6,000- 7,000 km North India trips are the deciding factor. While the charging infrastructure has improved significantly, long-distance EV touring in India still requires careful planning, and charging stops can add considerable time to your journey. The Harrier EV, Sierra EV and 9S are all capable EVs, but none of them can match the convenience and flexibility of a diesel SUV on long, cross-country trips.Given your experience with the XUV300 diesel and your high annual mileage, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is the most sensible upgrade. It offers strong performance, excellent highway stability and a proven diesel powertrain that is well-suited to long-distance touring. If you want a more premium and comfortable experience, the Tata Harrier diesel is also a strong contender, with a spacious, refined cabin and a comfortable ride. Both cars will give you the range, flexibility and peace of mind you need for your long road trips, without the compromises of charging infrastructure.

I travel 40 km per day in Hyderabad city traffic. I want to buy an SUV within my budget. I currently drive a Tata Harrier manual and now want an automatic SUV with good fuel efficiency.

With 40km a day in Hyderabad traffic, your priority should be a comfortable automatic with good fuel efficiency and low running costs. Since you are coming from a Harrier manual, you are already used to a large SUV, but in city traffic, a smaller, more efficient automatic will make a bigger difference to your daily experience. The best option for your usage is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid automatic. The hybrid system delivers excellent fuel efficiency in stop-start traffic, and the automatic gearbox is smooth and stress-free. It is also a reliable, low-maintenance car with a strong service network, which is important for long-term ownership. The only drawback is that it is not as big as the Harrier, but for city use, it is the more sensible choice. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara also offer the same powertrain if you prefer the look of those. If you want something a bit more premium and are willing to compromise slightly on fuel efficiency, the Kia Seltos IVT automatic is a good alternative. It is more spacious and feels more upmarket, but it will not match the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid on fuel economy in city traffic.Overall, the Victoris Hybrid automatic is the best fit for your usage and budget. It will make your daily commute easier, cheaper and more comfortable.

I am considering the Tata Harrier Adventure X AT Diesel. I stay in Hyderabad. Currently, I have an Indigo CS, which I bought in 2009, a diesel. Now, I am planning to exchange it. What is your suggestion?

Verified

The Tata Harrier Adventure X AT Diesel is a solid choice if you are looking for a rugged, spacious and comfortable SUV with strong diesel performance. Coming from a 2009 Indigo CS diesel, the Harrier will feel like a massive step up in terms of refinement, safety, comfort and overall driving experience. The diesel engine is punchy and well-suited to highway runs, while the automatic gearbox makes city driving far less tiring. That said, it is worth considering the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic as well. This Mahindra car offers a more modern cabin, a stronger feature set and a more polished ownership experience overall. If you are set on the Harrier, the Adventure X is a good mid-spec variant with most of the essential features, but do check the exact feature list and compare it with the equivalent XUV 7XO variant before making a final decision.Overall, the Harrier is still a very good SUV, but the XUV 7XO is the one we would lean towards today.

I am looking to buy a car in the Rs 20-30 lakh budget. My driving is mostly in the city, and I cover around 50km every weekday, with occasional driving on Saturdays. I want a car with good after-sales service and decent fuel efficiency for city use. Most of my commute is along the Coastal Road from Bandra East to Fort in Mumbai. I am considering the Kia Seltos 2026 X-Line and the Tata Harrier EV, but I'm open to other suggestions if there's a better option in this price range. I have already ruled out the Honda Elevate, Toyota Hyryder, Honda City, and I don't want to buy a Maruti Suzuki.

If you can charge at home, go for the Hyundai Creta Electric. Your 50km Mumbai city run suits an EV perfectly, and this one will do the coastal road crawl very smoothly and deal with stop-start traffic well, thanks to its nicely tuned one-pedal driving mode. Hyundai’s service consistency in Mumbai is better than Tata’s today, and the Creta’s size is easier to park than a Harrier. Running costs in the city drop sharply versus petrol or diesel, and your budget will comfortably get you the larger 51.4kWh battery, which, as per our testing, delivers a combined real-world range of 430km.The Kia Seltos is a fine pick only if you cannot charge at home or at the office. In that case, pick the 1.5 NA IVT combo for the most seamless drive in the city. Kia’s service is also generally hassle-free.One honest catch with the Creta Electric is that you need a reliable charging point at home or work, and the upfront cost is higher than that of a petrol Seltos. If you have a fixed parking spot with a plug, it is the easiest, cheapest way to do your daily Bandra East to Fort grind.
