I have a Škoda Superb L&K 2022, which comes with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) drivetrain, while in some international markets, the Superb has been offered with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup. My first question is: how does FWD differ from RWD in terms of basic driving dynamics? Secondly, what does chassis weight distribution mean in a car, and what significance does it have for driving dynamics and handling? Is an ideal weight distribution necessarily associated with an RWD setup? Also, is it correct to say that RWD is always better than FWD or AWD? The Skoda Superb is a front-wheel-drive car globally, including in international markets. There is no rear-wheel-drive version of the Superb. The confusion may come from the fact that some premium sedans in the same segment, such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class, are rear-wheel drive, but the Superb itself is not. Hi Autocar team, I am looking for a premium EV. I am confused between the BYD Sealion, Model Y, and Model YL. We are a family of four with mostly city driving and take outstation trips twice a month of about 350-400 km. Which would be the best option in terms of value for money? I also like sporty looks. We plan to set up home charging. I currently drive a Skoda Superb and am looking to replace it.

Go for the BYD Sealion 7. For a family of four stepping out of a Superb, it’s the comfier daily - softer ride, quieter cabin and a roomier rear bench than the Model Y, so city runs and school-office duty feel easy. Your 350-400 km trips should not be an issue with the big battery and fast-charging capabilities. It also gives similar range and kit for less money, so it’s the stronger value. The design is sleek enough and performance is properly quick for India, and though both are limited, BYD car has the edge on dealer network and reach at the moment.The Model Y is more playful to drive and its software and driver aids are slicker. It is the more tech forward choice, and if that's what you're after, it might be worth considering. The Model Y L definitely has the edge on space, although its real-world range and comfort is yet to be proven. It is a much larger vehicle, however, so driving in the city could be cumbersome compared to the others. The Y L is also quite a bit more expensive than the Sealion 7. Test drive both and see if you have a preference, as both the Tesla and BYD are good options, but we would pick the Sealion 7 for your requirement.

Which would be the better choice among the BYD Sealion 7, Mahindra XEV 9e, and Vinfast VF7? I currently own a Skoda Superb, which is 6 years old, and my ownership experience has been good so far. However, I am considering switching to an EV as a replacement, mainly because I am concerned about potential mechatronics-related repairs and higher maintenance costs as the car ages, even though I have not faced any issues yet. My heart says the BYD Sealion 7 would be the ideal replacement or upgrade for the Superb because of its build quality, premium cabin, and overall feel. However, my mind wonders whether it truly offers good value for money considering its premium price tag, although budget is not a major constraint for me. My daily driving is around 20-30 km, mostly within the city, with only occasional outstation trips. Considering my usage pattern and expectations, which of these EVs would you recommend?

Pick the BYD Sealion 7. It comes closest to your Superb in the way it feels inside and the calm, premium way it goes down the road, and BYD’s EV tech is well proven here. For 20-30km city usage it is smooth, very efficient, and the cabin quality, quietness and ride will feel like a real upgrade that's on par with luxury cars in the same price range.The Mahindra XEV 9e and Vinfast VF7 do sound like good value with the amount of performance and features they offer, but they both belong a size and segment down on the BYD, and that's reflected in the price too. Plus, though feature laden, their cabins will not give you the same plushness you enjoyed in your Skoda Superb. One catch with the Sealion 7 is BYD’s smaller network as compared to Mahindra. But with budget not being a big worry and your usage being mostly in the city, the peace-of-mind of mature EV hardware and genuine upmarket feel makes the BYD car the right call for you. Charge at home and you will need to top up just once every few days.

Hi, My current car is a Skoda Superb L&K, which has done around 18,400 km. I really like the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line. Is it worth upgrading to the Tayron, or should I continue with the Superb, considering it is already a fantastic car?

With a 2023 Skoda Superb L&K that has only 18,400 km on it, I would not switch unless you clearly need what the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line gives you: a higher seat, easier entry, and better clearance for rough roads or steep speed breakers. For your mix of city and highway use in a near-new car, keeping the Superb makes more sense right now.Three reasons. First, the Superb has a roomier back seat, so family trips are easier. Second, at this mileage, your car is almost new, so changing now will mean a big hit on resale, plus fresh tax and insurance for gains that may be small in daily use. Third, the move from a long, low car to a taller one changes the feel: you sit higher and see more, but the Superb's suspension is soft and plush while the Volkswagen car is a bit more sporty in the way it rides, especially on big wheels as the R-Line gets.Overall, unless you have a clear need for the higher seat and rough-road ease, holding on to your Superb a bit longer is the smarter move.
