I used to own a Tata Nexon AMT petrol for five years, but I had to sell it due to a serious manufacturing-related rusting issue and a poor service experience. I’m now looking to buy a new automatic petrol SUV with a budget of up to Rs 14 lakh. The car will mainly be used for weekend driving within the city, with perhaps one long trip every month. The annual running is expected to be only around 5,000- 6,000 km. A car that does not require much hassle in terms of servicing would be a major plus. Good power output and decent fuel efficiency are also important. What options can be considered?

Given your low annual running, weekend city use and a monthly highway trip, a petrol automatic is the right choice. Since you had a poor experience with Tata cars, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic. It is a reliable, hassle-free SUV with a proven service network, which is exactly what you are looking for. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is smooth and the 6-speed torque converter automatic is far better than the AMT you had in the Tata Nexon. It is not the most powerful car in the segment, but it is dependable and easy to live with.If you want something with a bit more power and a more engaging driving experience, the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI automatic is a good alternative. The turbo petrol engine is punchy and the 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth in the city. Skoda's service network is not as extensive as Maruti's, but it has improved significantly in recent years. The Mahindra XUV 3XO petrol automatic is also worth considering. It is one of the most powerful cars in the segment and offers a strong feature list, but the boot is on the smaller side.Overall, the Brezza is the safest recommendation for your requirements. If you want more performance, the Kylaq is the better choice.

Looking for a sedan that fulfils the following criteria, in order of preference: Smooth, non-bumpy ride that doesn’t wobble over potholes and speed breakers Good mileage Relatively low maintenance costs Comfortable rear seats with good legroom, as the car will be chauffeur-driven Budget: Rs. 12–16 lakh Usage: 95% in city traffic Please suggest suitable sedans based on the above criteria, ranked from highest to lowest preference. Brands such as Honda, Hyundai, Skoda and Volkswagen are preferred. I am currently using a Kia Sonet, which is absolutely disappointing in all the above respects. Thanks, Dr Chinwalla

For your requirements, the Honda City is what we would recommend. It offers the most comfortable rear seat in the segment, with excellent legroom and a well-cushioned bench that makes this Honda car ideal for chauffeur-driven city use. The ride quality is also very well judged, with the suspension absorbing potholes and speed breakers without the car feeling bouncy or unsettled. Honda’s reputation for reliability and relatively low maintenance costs further strengthens its case, and the City’s petrol engine is efficient enough for your predominantly city driving. The Hyundai Verna 1.5 MPI would be the second choice. It offers a comfortable ride and a premium cabin experience, but the rear seat is not as spacious or as comfortable as the City’s, which is a key consideration for your usage. And while the mileage is good, it's not quite as good as the City's. The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus are both good cars, but their ride quality is firmer, and they are not as well suited to chauffeur-driven city use.Overall, the Honda City is the best fit for your requirements and budget. It delivers the right balance of comfort, ride quality, efficiency and ownership experience for a predominantly city-driven sedan.

Hi Team Autocar, Firstly, I wish to thank you for the advice you rendered earlier. Based on your advice, I have booked the Toyota Taisor. I now wish to ask for advice for my father, who is looking to replace his 2015 Skoda Octavia with something more compact and easy to drive. His daily commute isn't much, and he mostly drives around the city in Lucknow. His budget is Rs. 15-16 lakh on-road. I really liked the new Hyundai Venue. Is that a good choice? Could you also suggest some other vehicles in this price range?

Since your father has been driving an Octavia for a while, a good replacement would be within the family. The Skoda Kylaq is what we would recommend. The Hyundai Venue is also good, but the DCT gearbox isn't as smooth in the city. The Kylaq is compact, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces and easy to park and it gets a strong 1.0-litre TSI engine with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The seat position too is comfortable, and getting in and out is rather easy. The steering is light, visibility is good, and within your budget you can get the top-spec Prestige+ trim with all the bells and whistles.

Hi team, I want to purchase a new car mainly for city use with 55 km daily running and highway driving very occasionally. I want a hassle free car for which I am considering Kushaq facelift classic plus model with post market modification, the new Sierra petrol model, Toyota Hyryder strong hybrid or Honda Elevate in a budget of 15 to 18 lakh. Please suggest.

We would recommend the Honda Elevate as it suits you best within your budget. In the city it is very smooth, quiet, and easy to drive, and the CVT transmission needs no effort in stop-go traffic. Steering is light, the ride handles bad roads well, and Honda's service network and long-term reliability are strong, which takes worry out of ownership. For your rare highway trips it cruises calmly, and the braking and high speed stability are reassuring. Also, the four cylinder engine is more powerful than the Kushaq and in the VX trim, you get the essential kit like parking camera with sensors, LED headlamps, powered tailgate and a single-pane sunroof among others.

I want to upgrade from my 12-year-old VW Vento to a comfortable SUV. My driving is not much, around 300-400 km per month. My budget is Rs 18-20 lakh, and I intend to keep the car for a long time. Which one should I go for?

Since you own a VW Vento, you are already familiar with VW's sales and service experience; hence, you could consider getting the Volkswagen Taigun 1.0 8AT. It is a solid mid-size SUV that is likely to feel very similar to your outgoing vehicle in terms of driving manners, but at the same time it packs in all the niceties, as well as a more powerful turbo-petrol engine with a modern 8-speed automatic. The Skoda Kushaq is also an option you could consider, which is the Taigun's mechanically identical Skoda counterpart.Alternatively, you could consider a Kia Seltos 1.5 IVT too. It is a bit larger, more spacious, comfier and better equipped than the two VW-Skoda SUVs From a long-term perspective, the Kia car mentioned above deserves serious consideration.
