I am planning to buy a new car. Currently owning a 2022 Creta. I am confused between the Tata Sierra Turbo petrol accomplished + and the Mahindra XUV 700 AX7 model, as the prices are quite similar for both these models. Not sure which one will make better sense, and also the one that will be easier to manage for a long period of ownership

The Tata Sierra and Mahindra XUV700 are slightly different vehicles, and it depends on your requirements and priorities. Also, the Mahindra XUV700 is due to be discontinued and replaced in Jan 2026 with the XUV7X0, which is essentially an upgraded XUV700.
If you want power and performance, the Mahindra XUV 7XO, with its strong petrol and diesel engine options, is the one for you. However, the petrol engine is a bit of a guzzler and will burn a hole in your pocket. Another reason to buy the XUV7X0 is the space and the on-board tech, which is very impressive.
The Tata Sierra is a more compact car, which makes it much easier to park and manoeuvre, and overall it's easier to drive thanks to fantastic all-round visibility. The Sierra’s 1.5 turbo-petrol, though nowhere near as powerful as the XUV7X0’s 2-litre petrol, is smooth and strong enough to give you enough punch for everyday driving. Also, a plus is the 6-speed auto, which is jerk-free and refined.
The Sierra’s long-term performance is not yet known, and Tata’s poor reputation for quality and service precedes it. However, since it's made in a new plant with a far better quality culture, we are hopeful that with the Sierra, Tata will put this reputation behind it. We would lean towards the Sierra as it's a similar kind of car to the Hyundai Creta, which you are currently using.

I am planning to buy a new car and am confused between the XEV 9S, Harrier EV, and Fortuner 4x2 Diesel Automatic. My usage is mostly within the city, with occasional weekend drives of up to 100 km. I live in an area with a lot of incline terrain and bad roads, and my monthly driving is around 500 km. I also have my own parking space where I can install a charger. Considering my driving pattern and road conditions, should I opt for an EV or choose a petrol or diesel vehicle, and which car would be the best choice for my needs?

For city use, the Toyota Fortuner is not ideal. Since you have private parking that accommodates a charger, this is a perfect time to switch to an EV. The Mahindra XEV 9E is more appealing than the Harrier EV, but the Mahindra XEV 9S is the one to focus on because it is more practical and also costs less.

It offers enough range for your 100 km weekend runs, has sufficient power and torque to tackle steep inclines, and has adequate ground clearance for rough roads. The Fortuner will handle rough roads better, but given that it is much more than the 9S. It is hard to justify the extra spend for occasional rough-road use.

I am planning to buy a new car and have narrowed it down to the Tata Sierra TGDI top model (approx ₹24.5 lakh on road) and the Mahindra XUV 7XO; my monthly run is up to 1000 km and fuel efficiency is not a big issue, and I am looking for a tech-powered car with good road presence - which one should I choose?

The Tata Sierra stands out for its design. Its new 1.5 TGDI and 6-speed automatic gearbox combination is smooth, refined and delivers strong performance. Also, this Tata car is packed to the gills with tech and features, and you'll be happy to know that fit-finish and quality levels are the best compared to any other Tata vehicle on sale.

The Mahindra XUV7XO, on the other hand, will continue to be equipped with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, which will certainly feel stronger and punchier than the Tata's unit. Both are likely to have a similar features list, and both are likely to rank similarly in terms of their ride comfort and driving dynamics. The Mahindra car, though, has an edge over the Sierra in terms of a third row of seating. It gives you the flexibility to ferry 6 or 7 passengers occasionally.

So ask yourself this: Is having a third row of seats something that matters to you, in which case, the XUV7XO is the one to get. If not, go for the Sierra - it scores higher on emotional appeal.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new car for my grandparents. My budget is 20-25 lakh. They have an Innova and a Ciaz. I want to replace the Ciaz with something spacious and comfortable in the back. The car is going to be mostly chauffeur-driven, so comfort and convenience are paramount. They ideally want something electric but are flexible and can wait 4 to 6 months for a new launch. What do you recommend?

The best option is the newly launched Mahindra XEV 9S, which is superbly priced and fits your budget well. You can go for the 70kWh battery option, which is a good sweet spot between a very aggressive price of Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom) and a decent range.
The reason why the XEV 9S trumps other cars is because of the spacious back seat, which slides back and forth and reclines, making it the most comfortable car at this price. The ride is also very plush, though there is a bit of up-and-down body movement because Mahindra has tuned the suspension on the softer side. We don’t see any better option coming in the next 4-6 months, and feel this is the best replacement for your Ciaz.

Hi team, my monthly driving is around 500 km per month and with occasional long drives, my annual usage is roughly 10,000km, a mix of city & highways. I am looking for tech & features. Interested in a 7-seater automatic with a budget of around 21-22 lacs. Confused between XUV700 diesel, XUV700 petrol, Kia Carens Clavis 1.5 turbo petrol. Pls advise.

We would narrow your choice down to the Mahindra XUV700, but suggest you wait for a month when its replacement, the XUV 7X0, will be launched.
The Mahindra XUV 7X0 will be absolutely feature-packed with a three-screen layout, a full suite of ADAS, and connected tech. Though your running isn’t very high, we would still recommend the diesel as it's smooth, economical and will command better resale value.

I am looking to buy a good EV and want something a segment above city cars. I had shortlisted the XEV 9e, but considering the ₹2 lakh price difference compared to the 9s, I feel the XEV 9e may not sustain its current pricing and could see a price correction. The December offers are available, but they are not attractive enough for me to close the deal. Should I wait for another 2-3 months, or do you think the current offers are the best and I should go ahead with the purchase?

There is no confirmation of a possible price reduction for the Mahindra XEV 9e. In fact, carmakers usually use the new calendar year to bump up prices. If your heart is set on the Mahindra XEV 9e, we'd advise you to make the most of the year-end discounts.

Alternatively, you could consider the attractively priced Mahindra XEV 9S that is essentially a 9e in a conventional SUV body style. The two SUVs are one and the same under the skin, and it's only the different suspension tuning (the 9S is set up much softer) that is the point of difference that you'd feel on the move. The 9S also gives added flexibility with a third row of seats.

I am confused between the XEV 9S and the XUV 7XO. My monthly running is around 1,500 km, and I have my own parking space. Please advise.

The new Mahindra XEV 9S and upcoming XUV 7XO will be closely related in many ways, sharing their body panels, interior layout and features. However, the two will be very different under the skin, with the 9S coming built on Mahindra's new-age INGLO electric architecture.
If the majority of your usage will be in the city and you have the option to install an EV charger in your parking, the Mahindra XEV 9S would make more sense. For starters, running costs will be significantly lower than the petrol/diesel XUV 7XO, and there's also the other advantages you get on an EV - near silent running and supremely smooth performance. What's more, with the benefits available on EVs, the final price will not be much more than a comparable Mahindra XUV 7XO.

The 7XO promises to build on the XUV 700's strengths by adding more features like a three-screen layout. The petrol and diesel engines will be carried forward from the XUV 700, but that's no bad thing because they are powerful and refined. That said, consider the XUV 7XO only if you undertake long-distance journeys frequently, where the lack of reliable public EV chargers can play spoilsport.

I plan to buy a Thar Rox. My daily running is about 10 km, with long road trips once every quarter. Which engine is best for my use - petrol or diesel - and which model offers the best value for money within a ₹20 lakh budget? Please advise.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx petrol makes more sense given your limited running. The 2.0 litre turbo petrol is powerful, smooth and refined. While the diesel is more efficient, it is not as smooth, and you would need significantly higher running costs to recover its higher upfront cost.

Since you are not planning hardcore off-roading and your usage will mostly be daily commutes and highway driving, the fact that the petrol is only offered in 4X2 does not really matter.

The MX5 fits your requirements well, in both manual and automatic, stays within your budget, and offers features you would expect, such as 19-inch alloys, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a single pane sunroof and a reversing camera.

I want to buy a seven-seater car with decent boot space. I am open to ICE or EV options, and my budget is around Rs 20-22 lakh. My monthly running is around 1,000 km. Please suggest a comfortable, feature-loaded vehicle with a sunroof option.

The Mahindra XUV700 is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable, and feature-loaded. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy and refined, and the 7-seater version has a decent boot space as well. The XUV700 is also available with a sunroof.
The only downside of this Mahindra car is that the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is not very fuel-efficient, and you will need to be comfortable with the fact that the XUV700 is not a very frugal car.

I am looking to buy an SUV with a budget of up to Rs 22-23 lakh. My must-haves are a minimum 3-star safety rating, excellent suspension, at least 13 kmpl fuel efficiency with a 60% city and 40% highway usage pattern with about 10k Kms annual running, a minimum of 400 litres of boot space with a spare wheel, a reliable automatic transmission and the ability to pre-cool or pre-heat the car before entering it, and a fuss-free ownership experience for at least 13 years.

The Mahindra XUV700 is a good option to consider. It is spacious, has a comfortable ride, and the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is refined and punchy. The automatic gearbox is smooth, and the cabin is well-built and feature-rich.
The only downside is that the third row is best suited for children, and the boot space is not as big as in some rivals. This Mahindra car is also available with a 2.2-litre diesel engine, but it is not as refined as the petrol.
