I am planning to buy the new Hyundai Venue HX6 DCT petrol. Most of my driving will be within Bangalore city in bumper-to-bumper traffic, with occasional highway trips. I am looking for a modern car with decent features, and this variant fits my budget of Rs 12-14 lakh. I am 27 years old, 6 feet tall, and this will be my first car. Usage will mostly be with two occupants (driver + 1), though occasionally there could be 4. Is this a good choice, and are there any obvious drawbacks I should be aware of?

The Hyundai Venue HX6 DCT is a good pick for your requirements, but it is advisable to check the following models as well. Here's a list of options and how they compare -
  • Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT: Down on wow features to the Venue, but has a smoother gearbox, plusher ride, and more comfortable seats.
  • Skoda Kylaq Signature+ AT: Again, not as well-equipped as the Venue, but it has a smoother gearbox and punchier engine. Space at the back is less, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker for you.
  • Kia Sonet HTX Petrol DCT: It is due for replacement within a year, but it is very competent. Packs in plenty of tech and shares its engine and gearbox with the Venue, and is actually a better value for money. Space is less at the back, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker for you.
  • Mahindra XUV 3XO REVX A: Stronger engine, lots of features, and feels tougher in its build. Boot space is less than the Hyundai car.

I have a family of six, including kids aged 11 and 6 and elderly parents. I’m looking for a petrol automatic car focused on comfort rather than performance, mainly for city use and one annual road trip. Annual usage is under 5,000 km, and my budget is preferably within ₹22 lakh. Which car should I choose?

The Kia Carens Clavis is the ideal pick for your requirements. It's a well-packaged MPV that offers comfortable seating across all three rows. A one-touch operation for the middle row seat fold makes access to the last row easy. Also, there is ample movement built into the middle row to balance space for all passengers.

The Clavis is also easy to drive and doesn't intimidate as some three-row SUVs can. From the Clavis line-up, the Turbo DCT HTX(O) is the one to buy.

Of the other three-row petrol-auto options, there's the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari.

I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of ₹15 lakh. My priorities include good suspension, a panoramic sunroof, a spacious cabin that can comfortably accommodate someone 6ft tall, automatic transmission and good safety ratings. The car will mostly be used for weekend-long drives and occasional office commutes. Please suggest a suitable option.

You should consider the Mahindra XUV 3XO. It offers a spacious cabin that can easily accommodate six-footers, is equipped with a panoramic sunroof, and offers a comfortable ride - everything that you're looking for.
This Mahindra car is available with two 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engines, one of which is a direct-injection unit, while the other is an MPFI unit. Both engines can be had with either manual or automatic transmissions. The compact SUV has also received a full, 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP. Mahindra XUV 3XO prices range from Rs 7.28 lakh to Rs 14.40 lakh (ex-showroom).

I am planning to buy a new sub-4-metre SUV with a strict budget of ₹15-16 lakh (on-road). I prefer a petrol automatic with a proper automatic gearbox (no AMT). My shortlisted options are the Hyundai Venue HX8, Mahindra XUV 3XO (AX7/AX5 L), Kia Sonet GTX Plus, and Tata Nexon Fearless Plus. I currently own a Ford EcoSport and would prefer a driving experience similar to that. Please advise.

We would first recommend that you check out the Skoda Kylaq Prestige AT, which would be the ideal replacement for your Ford EcoSport. Like the EcoSport, the Kylaq is an entertaining car to drive, with slick handling being a highlight. The 1-litre turbo-petrol engine of this Skoda car is punchy too, and the gearbox is also smooth. All in all, the Kylaq delivers a very enjoyable driving experience that you are sure to appreciate. Do note, while the Kylaq is well equipped, it does miss some frills that you get on rival models of the same price.
From your shortlisted options, it's the Mahindra XUV 3XO that we'd recommend. Again, the engine, gearbox, and handling make the 3XO a fun-to-drive compact SUV. Among the variants, the AX7 gets you niceties like larger rims, leatherette upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof, among other features. The AX5 L variant, on the other hand, gets ADAS features which can be a lifesaver. However, in our experience, the ADAS features are best put to use on highway journeys. If you drive on highways often, the AX5 L would be the right pick for you.

I want a new petrol car with good safety features and an excellent music system, and I’m confused between the Mahindra 3XO and Tata Nexon. Which one should I choose?

Both the Tata Nexon and Mahindra 3XO are tough-feeling and robust compact SUVs, and both boast 5-star Global NCAP safety ratings. Both models also get branded audio systems, though it's advisable to test them out for your preferences.

Of the two models, it's the Mahindra 3XO that's the more complete package. It's better finished, better equipped and more spacious than the Tata Nexon. What also tips the ratings in favour of the Mahindra is its punchier petrol engine and slicker gearboxes - both manual and automatic.

Where the 3XO loses out is in luggage capacity, offering less room than you'd get in a Nexon.

Hi, I have recently learned to drive and am planning to buy my first car. My budget is around Rs 10 lakh, with an expected monthly usage of about 600km, mostly within Chennai city. I am looking for a reliable automatic car with good mileage and decent features. I have shortlisted the Maruti Swift and Baleno, Hyundai Exter and i10 Nios, Kia Sonet and Nissan Magnite. I also like the Mahindra XUV 3XO for its looks. Would it be practical for my usage? Thank you.

Mahindra XUV 3XO Petrol AT is a good-looking car, but it is not particularly known for mileage. In our real-world test, the XUV 3XO gave a mileage of  9.89 kpl in the city. In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT gives a mileage of 12.7 kpl in the city.
If you want a slightly bigger car, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT or Toyota Glanza AMT can be a good option. They are essentially the same car with different badges. Both offer a real-world fuel efficiency of around 12 kpl, and can deliver even more with a relaxed driving style. They are also known for their reliability and low cost of ownership.

We are a family of five looking to buy a new car with a budget of Rs 12-13 lakh. We are considering an SUV or micro SUVs like the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon and Tata Punch. Please suggest which would be the best fit.

Since you are a family of five, rear seat space and comfort would be important; thus, we would recommend the Mahindra XUV 3XO as your best option. It has a wide rear seat, so seating three at the rear will be much better than other compact SUVs.
Overall, this Mahindra car is a well-rounded car with good features and smooth, powerful engines, though fuel efficiency is not class-leading. If this is very important, you could also look at the Kia Syros, which has very comfy rear seating with even sliding and reclining seats and cooling too. And besides the quirky looks, there's nothing significantly wrong with this Kia car.

I ma going to purchase my first car and new to cars. I want to buy an automatic car with mostly city drive and occasional highway. I need a car with 3 adult rear seat with a budget of 13-15 lakh on road. From my side, I have looked for punch but heard it's rear seat is not good for 3 adults and also have 3xo ax5 in mind. Please advise as open to any options

Yes, seating three adults at the rear of the Tata Punch will be tight. Tata Motors has recently unveiled a new updated Punch; however, changes are to the features and engine, space inside will remain the same.

We would recommend the Mahindra XUV 3XO as the rear is spacious, particularly in terms of width, which is what you will need to seat 3 adults at the rear. Moreover, the car has a comfortable ride and is well-equipped too.

However, do not expect class-leading fuel efficiency as the engines are tuned with a bias towards a more lively performance.

Hi Autocar team, I have been looking to purchase a car for the last six months and am confused by so many good options. My budget is ₹20 L. I booked the Honda Elevate Adventure CVT but realised it feels very dated. I want features like ADAS 2.0, a 360° camera, panoramic sunroof, good speakers, and all modern tech. I considered the new Venue but it doesn’t seem like a good value for money. I have been stuck between the Tata Nexon and the MG 3 XO. Mostly two people will be travelling, and the car will be used mainly for highway travel and some light city use. We want an automatic with a good balance of performance and features. We can also consider the Creta, Seltos, or other C‑segment SUVs if they satisfy the above conditions.

You wouldn't find a C or mid-size SUV with all of your requirements (especially level 2 ADAS) for under Rs 20 lakh.

But if you can stretch it a bit, we would recommend the Kia Seltos HTX (A) variant. This would be just over your budget but will meet with all your requirements of ADAS level 2, a 360-degree camera, and good speakers (Bose).

Moreover, it's an easy enough car to drive, and the 1.5 litre naturally aspirated engine coupled to the CVT gearbox works very well, especially in low and moderate city traffic. If you must stick within your budget, then opt for the Mahindra 3XO, which will meet all of your requirements, too.

Hi, I own a 2014 diesel Ertiga and am planning to upgrade to an automatic car costing under ₹20 lakh. I am looking for a car that is equal to or shorter in length so that it fits into my garage. My usage is around 100 km per month in the city and 2,000 km per year on highways. Please suggest.

There are multiple automatic cars that fall within your budget, however, since vehicle length is a constraint, your choices are limited to the Volkswagen Taigun or Skoda Kushaq from the mid-size SUV segment; all the other options measure more than 4.3m in length.
You could also consider sub-4-meter compact SUVs like the Kia Syros and Mahindra XUV 3XO, both of which are excellent options. Out of these, our top pick would be the Syros for its spacious boot and cabin, high-quality interiors, and lengthy equipment list.
