I am looking for a sub-compact SUV with a focus on mileage, safety, and a smooth driving experience. My budget is ₹13 lakh, and I want an automatic car. Around 70% of my driving will be in the city and 30% on the highway. I am considering the Skoda Kylaq, 3XO, and Toyota Taisor. My first car was a Toyota, and I have had a good overall experience. Please suggest which car I should go with. I am also open to other recommendations.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is essentially the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with a Toyota badge and is a reliable crossover and the most fuel-efficient of your short list. It’s a safe choice but not the most exciting one.
If you want a car that is enjoyable to drive both in the city and on the highway, we would suggest you look at the Skoda Kylaq, as it offers sharp handling, a comfortable ride, and strong performance. The Mahindra XUV 3XO has better features but isn’t quite as nice to drive as the Kylaq.

I want to exchange my Datsun Go T 2019 and buy a feature-rich SUV with better driving dynamics, power, performance, ride quality, comfort, stability, suspension, and overall driving experience. I also want premium value for money and at least ADAS Level 2 features. Please suggest a car under a ₹20 lakh budget that covers most of these requirements.

The best options for you to consider include the Mahindra XUV 3XO AT AX7 L and the Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT HX10. In fully loaded form, both compact SUVs pack in lots of comfort, tech and safety features, including ADAS. 

The Mahindra XUV 3XO has a more powerful engine, a smoother gearbox, more absorbent ride comfort and also feels more entertaining to drive. The XUV 3XO is more spacious, too. 

On the other hand, the Hyundai Venue has a fresher vibe to it and also feels more polished in its user interface and technology.

I am currently using a 2017 Creta 1.6 diesel manual, and I love its pickup and overall driving feel. I have clocked 85,000 km so far, and my driving is mixed city and highway. I am now planning to buy a new automatic car. My requirements are good driving dynamics, a comfortable interior, and generous boot space because my kids are over 6 ft tall. I prefer diesel because I enjoy diesel performance on the highway, and cruise control is a must. Please advise. Thank you.

First things first, you should know that some of the punch that you like about your Hyundai Creta's diesel engines is missing on modern day diesel engines. Engine calibration to meet the latest BS6 emission norms has, sadly, taken away that mid-range kick older turbo-diesels were known for. However, there are still some great diesel-automatic options available today. 

Among compact SUVs, the new Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO are worth a look. In the mid-sized SUV space, the new Tata Sierra, new Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta make for good, if unexciting, long-distance diesel SUVs. 

If your budget allows, you should consider the upcoming Mahindra XUV 7XO in diesel-automatic form. The engine-gearbox will be carried over from the current XUV 700. 

The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a smooth and strong unit and is really well complemented by the 6-speed automatic transmission. It is our pick of the diesel-automatic options.

Hi Autocar experts! I’m a first-time buyer with a strict ₹13 lakh budget and need an automatic car (not AMT). I have shortlisted the Hyundai Venue 2025 HX5 DCT variant. Is it good value for money within my budget? What are the pros and cons of the HX5 DCT variant? Do you have any other suggestions?

The Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT is a good package, but it is on the pricey side by segment standards. 

The HX5 variant does get reasonable features, but we would urge you to consider the HX6 version. While the price gap from the HX5 to HX6 is significant, the HX6 does get essential safety features like a rear wiper, adjustable rear headrests and wider tyres. Of course, the jump to HX6 also brings in more comfort features such as a rear armrest and auto climate control, among others.   

Alternatively, you could consider the Kia Sonet Turbo DCT HTX, Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5 and Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo Zeta, all of which offer good automatic gearboxes. Also pack in plenty of comfort and safety features within your Rs 13 lakh budget.

Please advise me on choosing the best petrol automatic car within a ₹13-14 lakh on-road budget in Bangalore for a family of four. My driving is evenly split between city and highway use. I have shortlisted the Maruti Brezza AT, Skoda Kylaq or Mahindra XUV 3XO AT, and Hyundai Venue DCT. While the Brezza seems practical, I am concerned about its driving engagement. The Kylaq and 3XO raise doubts around mileage and long-term reliability, and the Venue DCT makes me unsure about gearbox reliability and turbo efficiency in Bangalore traffic. Is the Brezza’s driving experience truly disappointing for someone who enjoys driving?

All the models you have shortlisted have their highlights and weaknesses. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is a well-rounded vehicle that excels in space and comfort. Maruti's service network is a huge plus in its own right. However, as you rightly identified, the Brezza is not exciting to drive. This Maruti Suzuki car's performance is fine in city driving conditions, and it will cruise comfortably on the highway. But the engine lacks punch in case that's important to you. 

If strong performance and good handling are requirements, the Skoda Kylaq and Mahindra XUV 3XO are the ones to be most interested in. Both models are good to drive, but fuel economy could be a concern in bumper-to-bumper city driving. 

We feel you will find a good balance in the Hyundai Venue 1.0 Turbo DCT. The engine is strong enough, and the gearshifts are also nice and quick. DCTs do tend to fumble at low speeds and aren't as smooth as torque converter autos. Although, it's not really an issue and surely not to the extent of avoiding the gearbox type altogether. 

Fuel economy should also be better than what you'd get with a torque converter.  The new Venue is also quite a wholesome package. The cabin is quite spacious, and the material quality is impressive.

I currently own a Ford EcoSport and an i20 Elite, both around 10 years old. I drive about 50 km daily in the city and do one highway trip of around 800-1,000 km every month. After test-driving several sub-4m SUVs, crossovers, and even the Virtus (I know it's a completely different body type), I have shortlisted the Mahindra 3XO AX5 diesel and the Volkswagen Virtus 1.0 TSI. My budget is ₹15 to 17 lakh. The new car will be used mainly for highway trips with occasional city use. Which one would be better?

Given that your usage will primarily be on the highway, consider getting the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. Out on the highway, you'll appreciate the diesel's torquey nature and its better fuel efficiency compared to a petrol. The Mahindra XUV 3XO also has a spacious cabin and a comfortable ride, which makes it ideal for long distances. You can even opt for the AMT automatic gearbox for greater convenience on your city drives.

I am seeking expert advice on DPF management for the Mahindra 3XO Diesel AT, as my daily usage is 13 km each way in heavy Powai traffic in Mumbai. How often should I drive on the highway, and what are the ideal speed or RPM range, trip distance, and monthly frequency required to ensure effective soot regeneration?

Yes, you are right, your short drive in Mumbai traffic won’t allow the diesel particulate filter (DPF) of Mahindra XUV 3XO to reach the temperatures. It needs to ‘light-off or regenerate properly to burn off the soot which will accumulate in your DPF and trigger a malfunction warning. 

The way to raise the exhaust temperature and subsequently heat the DPF to its ‘light-off’ point is to run the engine under a steady load. You should plan a long drive at least once a month, with around half an hour of continuous driving at around 50-60kph. 

Use a gear that keeps the engine between 2,000 to 2,500 rpm and drive steadily without hard acceleration or braking. 

The aim is to drive consistently so that the exhaust temperatures can stabilise and you can complete the regeneration process without interruption. Since you live in Powai, the Eastern Expressway is not far away and can be a convenient stretch for you to clear your DPF periodically.

Shall I buy the existing Seltos HTX IVT as I’m getting a good discount, and will it have better resale value, or should I consider the XUV 3XO AX7L for better features and a turbo engine? My budget is around ₹14-15 lakh - please suggest.

If you are getting a good deal, go for the Kia Seltos HTX iVT. The new Seltos is bigger and fresher but gets the same engines and is likely to be at least a lakh more expensive. 

Yes, your resale will be hit once the new model comes out, but that can be compensated with the good deal you get on the outgoing model. The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a smaller car than the Seltos, so it will be a step down in that sense.

I currently own a Grand i10 diesel manual, which has been a very good car with excellent mileage. However, I now want to shift to an automatic transmission as most of my driving is in city traffic. My monthly running is around 1,200 km, with an outstation trip once every three months. My budget is ₹13-14 lakh. Please suggest a suitable automatic car. I am confused about whether to choose diesel or petrol.

We can understand that after driving a diesel car, you appreciate the great mileage they offer. However, if you want to switch to a diesel automatic, consider the Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO diesels, which provide automatic transmissions and are within your budget.
However, both the Tata and Mahindra diesels come with an AMT automatic transmission, which is not very smooth and has a noticeable lag when changing gears. On the highway, you have to plan your overtaking manoeuvres.
If you are not too fixated on diesel, we suggest looking at the Honda Amaze, which has a CVT gearbox that is much smoother for city driving, good enough for the highway, and reasonably efficient.

My budget is ₹14 lakh, and I want to buy an automatic car. Please suggest which is the better option among the Kia Sonet, Mahindra 3XO, and Hyundai Venue. I do a round trip of about 600 km to my hometown once every 4-5 months, and the rest of my driving is within the city. I am looking for good mileage, good boot space, and comfortable seating for three people in the rear.

One of the weaknesses of the Mahindra XUV 3XO is poor boot space for its class, and hence we would rule it out since boot space is one of your requirements. The Kia Sonet has the maximum boot space, but the Hyundai Venue is almost as good and overall is a better car after its recent upgrade a few months ago.
You can opt for the 1.0 turbo petrol with the DCT option, which will serve you well both in the city and on the highway. Since all the options you have listed are compact SUVs, rear seat space is not the best, and though three passengers are manageable, it will be a tight squeeze.
