Hi, I am planning to buy my first automatic car. It will be used mostly within Bangalore city, and occasionally, I will drive to my native place. Could you please suggest a good family car within a budget of Rs 10 lakh?
As your first car, we recommend the Hyundai i20 petrol-IVT for its smooth and refined powertrain. The interiors feel upmarket, and it is spacious and comfortable too. The Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT variant should fall within your budget, and despite being a mid-variant, it covers the basics well.
If you want a crossover-like option, you could opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor with the 1.2 petrol-AMT combination. Do keep in mind that it is likely to be more fuel-efficient than the Hyundai; the drive experience won't be as smooth or seamless.

I’m planning to buy an automatic car for my parents, and I’m really confused between the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Amaze. The car will be used in city traffic, so comfort, ease of driving, and reliability are very important to me. Which one do you think would suit elderly drivers better and be easier to live with in the long run?
The Honda Amaze is a no-nonsense, user-friendly compact sedan, with a smooth and responsive 1.2-petrol-CVT combination. Its large 416-litre boot gives it an advantage over the i20.
The Hyundai i20, on the other hand, feels distinctly more premium in terms of interior quality, as well as the equipment list. The i20's power delivery feels lazier than the Amaze's; however, it is much more refined in comparison. Moreover, the Hyundai also has broader, more supportive seats. Hence, for your parents, we'd recommend the i20 IVT for the more polished user experience it delivers.
That said, Honda and Hyundai are known for their service support and reliability, hence your ownership experience is likely to be trouble-free by opting for either of these two cars.

I am a first-time car buyer, but am confused between Altroz DCA and i20 IVT. I am 5.4ft, and have a family of four. City usage with 1/2 long trips in a month.
Considering your primary usage is in the city, a CVT gearbox is a better option than a DCT. DCTs can be jerky in stop-and-go traffic and are prone to overheating, which results in more frequent wear and tear. With that in mind, the Hyundai i20 CVT would be a better choice for you.
This Hyundai car is easy to maintain and comes equipped with most of the features available in the segment. Its CVT is also one of the smoothest on the market. The i20 has a larger wheelbase (2580mm) compared to the Tata Altroz (2501mm), translating into better second-row space. The engine is refined, and the power delivery is smooth, making it an overall easier car to live with.

I am 32 years old and have three other family members. I am planning to buy my first car and am confused between the Hyundai i20 and the new Hyundai Venue. Please suggest which one to pick, and also recommend a suitable trim. My budget is close to ₹11-12 lakh. I would prefer an automatic. It really depends on what you prefer: a car from a higher segment that is nicer to drive but has fewer features, or a car from a lower segment that offers far more premium features.
For daily commutes, the Hyundai i20 IVT (CVT) works beautifully. It is silky smooth, and the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has enough poke for quick overtakes at lower speeds. Combined with its compact dimensions, it is very easy to drive, which is a big plus for a first-time buyer. It is only on the highway where it can feel a bit underpowered, and this is where the 1.0-litre turbo DCT in the Venue has a clear advantage.
The new Venue is spacious enough for a family of four. The 1.0-litre turbo engine with the DCT is smooth in the city, but what makes it more versatile is the fact that it feels far more effortless on open roads compared to the i20 IVT. It is also easy to drive, with good all-around visibility. That said, the most affordable Venue variant with the DCT is the HX5, which is still over ₹12 lakh on road and only offers basic features. With the i20, however, you can get the top Asta (O) variant, which comes loaded with premium features, including a Bose audio system.
So, the final choice really comes down to what you value more: driving ease and premium features, or an SUV that offers greater comfort and better highway performance.

I am just learning car driving. I am planning to buy a used hatchback to learn fluently and use it for 5 years. Which car would be fine? I may use it weekly once may be upto 100kms and 3 months once a long drive of 800kms including up and down. I am living in Bangalore. I want a manual car
Since you are still learning, two cars that you can look at in the second hand market are the Maruti Suzuki Swift or Hyundai i20. Swift is slightly smaller, making it easy to drive in the city while i20 comes with more space and premium interiors. As you wish to keep the car for over 5 years, it will be wise to go for a car which is around 3 years old and should have an odometer reading between 35-40000kms. This way you will save on cost and still get a car which has some life left in it.

I am planning to buy a second car purely for city driving. It will be driven approximately 700 km per month. My criteria are that it should be automatic and within a budget of around ₹10 lakh. I have shortlisted the Hyundai i20 Sportz (O) iVT and Honda Amaze VX CVT. I have excluded AMT gearboxes due to their jerky driving experience. Can you help me choose a suitable car for my needs? Also, please suggest any other options that I may have overlooked.
Between the two, the Hyundai i20 makes the stronger case. It delivers excellent ride comfort in the city, and its CVT is among the smoothest in the segment. While the typical ‘rubber band’ effect of CVTs is present, it’s very well controlled here. The Honda Amaze does offer a few features the i20 misses, but the i20’s longer wheelbase means you get better rear-seat space.

I am looking for a small automatic car with good mileage. The car will be used purely in the city, as I already own an XUV700. The only criteria are fuel efficiency and a good automatic gearbox. My budget is around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
Considering you already own a Mahindra car, we would have suggested the Mahindra 3XO. It has a very smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic, but fuel efficiency from this gearbox and turbo-petrol combination is not the best.
Based on your requirements and considering that you already have a large SUV and need this car purely for city commuting, we would suggest the Hyundai i20, the Sportz (O) IVT variant. It is powered by a refined 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a smooth CVT automatic.
The compact size, light controls and smooth gearbox make this Hyundai car extremely easy to live with in urban conditions. The car is also spacious, feels premium on the inside, and has a large boot. Fuel efficiency will also be noticeably better compared to turbo-petrol engines.

I am buying a car for my mother. We need an automatic car mainly for city use, and long trips will be rare. I am considering the Exter S AMT, as its AMT is said to be better than others at this price point, and it also offers higher ground clearance. The other option is the i20 Magna CVT, which is around Rs 50 to 55K more expensive than the Exter S AMT variant. For bumper-to-bumper traffic and city driving, should I go for the i20 CVT, or is the Exter AMT smooth enough to stick with? Also, which transmission is more reliable in the long term?
Even though it is a bit pricier, the Hyundai i20 CVT (or IVT) feels like a more premium car compared to the Hyundai Exter AMT. The i20's drive experience is smoother and more refined thanks to its CVT, and it is more spacious and comfortable too. Also, while ground clearance is less than the Exter, it is more than adequate for our conditions.
Besides ground clearance, the only other reason to consider the Exter over the i20 is for its more compact dimensions, which make it relatively easier to manoeuvre and park in tight spaces. These aside, the i20 is superior in nearly every aspect.

I want to replace my i20 Elite petrol with a Tata Sierra diesel automatic. Monthly usage is under 1,000km. Budget is ₹20 lakh. Which car should I buy?
The Tata Sierra is a good upgrade from your Hyundai i20. You will enjoy the space and features inside. The diesel engine is not very punchy, but it's a tired and tested unit and it uses a lean NOx trap to manage emissions so you do not have to worry about the diesel particulate filter clogging as you do in other diesels in the segment - which tend to clog if your driving is all typically short runs (less than 60kms) in the city.
Besides the Tata Sierra, it's hard to figure out what you would like without knowing specifics, such as the importance of rear seat space, features, engine performance, etc. However, you can also consider the new Kia Seltos, which is a very good all-rounder. However, bear in mind, since you are switching to diesel, your running at least once a week should include a long drive with speeds around 60-70kph to avoid potential DPF clogging issues.

I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of up to ₹10 lakh, although I can stretch it slightly if required. I am currently confused between the Honda Amaze and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Are there any other options I should consider?
Both the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the Honda Amaze are worth considering as they come with proper automatic transmissions rather than AMTs. The Amaze is the more cost effective option. Its 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine has adequate performance for city use, and the CVT transmission is smooth and refined.
The Brezza, on the other hand, feels better to drive thanks to its larger 1.5 litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, the most affordable automatic Brezza is available only in the VXI variant, which costs close to Rs 13 lakh on road, putting it well above your stated budget.
A more affordable alternative is the Skoda Kylaq in the Signature variant, priced at around Rs 12 lakh on road. The Kylaq is engaging to drive, and its 1.0 litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic offers smooth performance with enough power for both city and highway driving.
If you want to stay well within a Rs 10 lakh budget, the Hyundai i20 is also a strong option. It is powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine and comes with a smooth CVT transmission, making it suitable for daily urban use.
