Toyota has launched the Hyryder CNG in India, with prices starting from Rs 13.23 lakh and going up to Rs 15.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The brand had already opened bookings for the Hyryder CNG back in November 2022, at a token amount of Rs 25,000. Compared to its equivalent petrol-powered version, the Hyryder CNG costs Rs 95,000 more. The Hyryder is just the second midsize SUV after the Maruti Grand Vitara to be equipped with a factory fitted CNG kit.

    • Offers a claimed fuel economy of 26.60km/kg
    • Uses 1.5-litre K15C engine from Ertiga, XL6 CNG
    • Bookings open at Toyota dealerships, online

The mild-hybrid petrol Hyryder is offered in E, S, G and V trims. The Hyryder CNG, meanwhile, will only be offered in S and G trims. Here’s a table showcasing the price comparison between the standard Hyryder and its CNG version.

    G MTRs 15.29 lakhRs 14.34 lakhRs 95,000

The S trim of the Hyryder CNG is Rs 38,000 more expensive than the equivalent Delta trim of the Grand Vitara CNG. Meanwhile, the Hyryder G CNG is Rs 45,000 more expensive than the equivalent Grand Vitara Zeta CNG.

    Toyota Hyryder CNG: powertrain details

The Hyryder CNG uses the same 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, K12C engine as the Ertiga and XL6 CNG. In petrol mode, the engine delivers 103hp and 136Nm, but in CNG-spec, the output drops to 88hp and 121.5Nm. As is the case with most CNG models, the Hyryder CNG is also only available with a 5-speed manual transmission, and Toyota claims the midsize SUV can deliver a fuel economy figure of 26.6km/kg.

Toyota Hyryder CNG: design and features

The Hyryder CNG retains the exterior design of its mild-hybrid petrol version, apart from the addition of the CNG badging. On the inside, the Hyryder CNG gets an all-black interior with the same switchgear and steering wheel from its Maruti counterpart, the Grand Vitara. However, Toyota has installed a 60-litre CNG tank in the boot, which has compromised the storage capacity compared to its petrol counterpart.

In its G trim, the Hyryder CNG gets equipment like full-LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, engine start/stop button, six airbags, cruise control and a reversing camera with parking sensors.

    Toyota Hyryder CNG: rivals

The Hyryder CNG will squarely compete with the Grand Vitara CNG, the only other midsize SUV with a CNG option, and also rivals other midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Nissan Kicks, Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun.
