2020 Hyundai i20 bookings cross 20,000 mark in 20 days

New Hyundai i20 prices had been revealed recently and the Korean brand claims that demand for the third-gen premium hatchback has been strong. Hyundai says they have received over 20,000 bookings in 20 days and have delivered over 4,000 units of the all-new car during the Diwali festive season.

    • Sportz, Asta and Asta(O) variants account for over 85 percent of total bookings
    • 2020 Hyundai i20 priced between Rs 6.80-11.18 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
    • Available in five engine and gearbox options

2020 Hyundai i20 variants in demand

The new i20 has launched with five powertrain options and in four trim levels – Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta(O); the higher three variants seem to be in greater demand. In fact, Hyundai reports that over 85 percent of bookings have been made for the higher three trims.

The 2020 i20 Sportz (Rs 7.60-9.00 lakh) is available with 1.2 petrol-MT, 1.2 petrol-CVT, 1.0 petrol-iMT and 1.5 diesel-MT engine-gearbox options and is quite well equipped. It comes with a segment-first tyre pressure monitor, along with equipment such as a rear camera, automatic headlights, keyless entry. A digital instrument cluster, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice recognition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and power folding and adjustable wing mirrors are also on offer with this trim.

The top-spec i20 Asta(O)(Rs 10.60-11.18 lakh) ups the features game considerably, with kit like the largest-in-segment 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charging, Hyundai’s BlueLink in-car connectivity tech, a seven-speaker Bose sound system, a sunroof and more.

2020 Hyundai i20 price and rivals

The original Hyundai i20 popularised the premium hatchback segment in India and the third-gen model is set to take that further. Although it is very well equipped, easy to drive (regardless of the powertrain), spacious and comfortable, it is on the pricey side.

    Diesel-MTRs 8.20-10.60 lakh---Rs 6.99-8.95 lakh-

Rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Tata Altroz come across as more value for money, even if they are comparatively lacking in features. The Honda Jazz is the only premium hatchback that’s more expensive than equivalent version of the i20 1.2 petrol; it’s also the only other model here to get a sunroof.

Despite the new i20’s high asking price, it bodes well for Hyundai that demand for the more expensive variants is strong.
