Maruti Suzuki has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 3 crore cumulative domestic sales in India, a first for any passenger vehicle manufacturer in the country. This accomplishment, reached over 42 years, highlights the company’s sustained market leadership from its first delivery of the Maruti 800 in 1983 to its current portfolio of 19 models with 170 variants.

  1. Maruti has achieved the quickest one crore unit sales in India

  2. The last 1 crore units were sold in just six years and four months

  3. Alto, Wagon R and Swift were the highest contributors to this milestone

The First 1 Crore: February 2012

The People’s Car Era

Maruti Suzuki took 28 years and two months to reach its first 1 crore sales milestone. This period was largely defined by the Maruti 800, the brand’s inaugural model, a foundational phase that established the company’s reputation for producing affordable and reliable vehicles, setting the stage for future growth.

The Second Crore: July 2019

Dominance of Hatchbacks

The journey to the second crore was substantially faster, taking just 7 years and five months. This era was characterised by the success of the company’s hatchback portfolio comprising eight models: the Alto (800/K10), Wagon R, Swift, Ritz, Celerio, A-Star, Baleno and Ignis.

The Third Crore in November 2025

Shortest time taken by a carmaker to achieve 1 crore in domestic sales

The company achieved its most recent 1 crore sales in a record time of 6 years and four months. This rapid growth reflects a strategic shift towards the utility vehicle (UV) segment to align with changing consumer preferences.

In the last 42 years, the Alto has been the top-selling model, with cumulative sales exceeding 47 lakh units, while the Wagon R and Swift have also become staples in the market, selling over 34 lakh and 32 lakh units, respectively.
