Exterior Design And Engineering

8.0

You’ll know this is a GLE at first glance. The wraparound rear quarter glass is a design trait that dates back to the original ML of 1997. What’s new are the eyebrow-like LED DRLs, reworked tail-light internals and refreshed bumpers. The GLE 300d in Professional trim keeps things clean with new-look 19-inch alloys, while AMG Line versions of the 450d and 450 go flashier with 20-inch AMG wheels, sportier bumpers and a grille with a neat star mesh.

Interior Space And Comfort

9.0

Inside, there’s rich quality, an airy layout and a calming use of materials. The new three-spoke steering looks cool but its all-touch interface isn’t always intuitive. Thankfully, Merc hasn’t bundled everything onto the touchscreen – seat and climate controls remain separate.

Rear seat space is excellent, with powered recline, a wide armrest and even rear seat slide. Visibility is good, and the panoramic sunroof adds to the sense of space. Boot space is generous, and the air suspension can lower for easier loading. There's also powered rear seat fold and a space saver neatly tucked under the floor.

Performance And Refinement

8.0

The 450 petrol’s straight-six is smooth, strong and sounds lovely. The 9-speed auto is intuitive, and the mild hybrid system subtly boosts performance. A 5.6s 0-100kph time is impressive for a 2.3-tonne SUV.

The four-cylinder GLE 300d will get the job done for most buyers but if you’re keen on the diesel kick the GLE 450d is the one you’d want. It’s straight-six diesel engine is fantastic and gives the GLE all the power and performance you’d expect of a large SUV.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

7.0

The GLE 300d is the economy pick with double digit fuel economy figures possible in everyday driving. The 450d is thirstier but it’s the 450 petrol that can scare you with its fuel bills.

Ride Comfort And Handling

8.0

While the GLE 300d rides on steel springs, the pricier versions get air suspension.
The air suspension rides beautifully but doesn’t like corners. There’s no sport mode for the suspension and the steering isn’t engaging. Still, stability is solid, and city manoeuvrability is decent. Off-road gear includes hill descent, terrain cameras and height-adjustable suspension.

Features And Safety

9.0

The 12.3-inch touchscreen has been upgraded with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and  crisper camera views while the digital dials sport more themes than before. New features include a head-up display, air purifier, fragrance dispenser, and heated/cooled front seats with multiple adjustments. Rear passengers get powered sunblinds, USB-C ports and climate control, though no wireless charging. Nine airbags, blind spot detection and auto braking are standard, though the latter is too sensitive for low-speed Indian traffic. ADAS isn’t as expansive as on newer Mercs – adaptive cruise is missed.

Value For Money

7.0

At Rs 96.4 lakh-1.15 crore, the GLE is expensive. It’s not the most dynamic or most spacious, but for comfort and polish, it nails the brief. If that’s your priority, the GLE deserves a close look.

I own a Mercedes-Benz E250 CDI (May 2014) that has covered only 63,000 km. I am thinking of replacing it. Which brand and model would you recommend among the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and Lexus RX, and why? My priorities are high reliability and low servicing costs, as the Mercedes-Benz E250 CDI has been disappointing.

Verified
18m

Given your experience with the E250 CDI and your clear priority for reliability and lower servicing costs, the Lexus RX is the recommendation. The RX has a strong reputation for long-term reliability, lower maintenance costs and a very refined ownership experience. Lexus’ hybrid powertrain is proven, efficient and well-suited to Indian conditions, and the brand’s focus on durability and customer service is a key advantage over the German rivals. The Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5 are both excellent SUVs, but they are more complex vehicles with higher long-term maintenance costs and a greater reliance on electronics and software. The Lexus car may not have the same outright performance or brand cachet as the German options, but it is the most sensible choice for an owner looking for a premium SUV that will deliver a hassle-free ownership experience over the long term.

I own a May 2014 Mercedes E250 CDI, which has covered just over 63,000 km. It still runs well, but the annual servicing costs are high, and one part or another needs replacement. I don't feel Mercedes cars are as bulletproof as they once were. I was thinking of replacing this with an SUV - which would you recommend between the GLE, the BMW X5 and the Lexus RX and which model? My usage is mainly city driving a couple of days a week, along with occasional long-distance trips.

Verified
11h

Given your usage pattern of mainly city driving with occasional long runs, the Lexus RX 350h would be our recommendation. The hybrid powertrain is particularly well-suited to your needs, offering excellent refinement and efficiency in urban conditions while still being capable and comfortable on longer journeys. Lexus cars also have a strong reputation for reliability and lower long-term maintenance costs, which addresses your concerns with the E 250 CDI.The Mercedes GLE and BMW X5 are both excellent SUVs, but they are more performance-oriented and can be more expensive to maintain over time. The GLE 300d is a strong diesel option, but with your limited usage, the benefits of a diesel are less compelling. The X5 xDrive30d is similarly impressive, but again, the Lexus hybrid makes more sense for your driving pattern. There are also these cars' respective petrol versions, but coming from a diesel, you might find their respective running costs much higher. The RX 350h strikes the right balance between luxury, efficiency and long-term ownership peace of mind. The only downsides are that it's not that exciting to drive, and that Lexus' network isn't anywhere near as big as Mercedes or BMW cars. But if you have a dealer close to you, and don't mind a more relaxed drive, it is a genuinely premium SUV that should prove to be a more satisfying ownership experience over the long term.

I’m thinking of buying a Mercedes GLE. Considering the facelift has just been revealed, should I wait for the newer version? And by when is it expected to launch in India?

Verified
8w

If you want the car in the next few months, buy the current Mercedes-Benz GLE. The India launch date for the new version hasn’t been announced, and going by how Mercedes usually staggers its new launches, you could be waiting around half a year to a year. We don't expect it to be launched before early to mid-2027. Part of the reason is that the GLE is locally assembled in India, so Mercedes-Benz’s Chakan plant in Maharashtra will first need to prepare for right-hand-drive kits of the updated version.Wait only if you specifically want the fresh look and updated tech, and you are fine holding off at least 6-9 months. The biggest update is the new dashboard with the three-screen 'Superscreen' setup. This includes the new MB.OS software with many new AI-based features packed in, and a generally slicker interface. The updated GLE will, however, likely be mechanically unchanged from the GLE currently on sale. Expect the same engines and suspension setups, which are well-sorted for our roads, and you’re likely to get faster delivery of the current model. Also, expect the new version to be priced higher and come with an initial waiting period.

Hi Autocar Team, I am 60 years old and have been driving a Toyota Fortuner automatic for the past 14 years. I am now planning to upgrade to a more luxurious vehicle that offers superior comfort, especially for both city and highway use. My budget is up to ₹90 lakh.

Verified
12w

After living with a Fortuner for so many years, you’re clearly used to a tough, dependable SUV and likely prefer diesel power. The best upgrade that fits your brief is the Mercedes-Benz GLE. It retains that solid SUV character you’re familiar with, offers generous space, and comes with a strong, refined diesel engine paired with a part-time all-wheel-drive system. While the GLE isn’t built to take quite the same rough-and-tumble punishment as the Fortuner, it delivers far higher levels of comfort, sophistication, and ease of driving, whether in city traffic or on long highway runs. The cabin feels genuinely premium, packed with features and excellent noise insulation, making every journey relaxing. In short, the GLE 300d combines the ruggedness you value with the luxury and refinement you now deserve. Compared to the Fortuner’s utilitarian nature, it feels like a quantum leap forward into the luxury SUV world.

I want to buy a new SUV for daily driving under ₹1.5 crore. My driving is around 3,000 km per month, including both city and highway use. I own a GLS Maybach and a Volvo XC90.

Verified

While there are a few interesting options in this price range, we feel you should pick the BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport. Apart from being excellent to drive and very luxurious, it will feel like a nice departure from your GLS and Volvo XC90. BMW's straight-six engines are superb when it comes to refinement, smoothness and performance, and given your intended heavy usage, some of which is on the highway, we'd recommend the diesel, which is strong and efficient. You can easily get more than 700km out of a tank of diesel in your mixed driving cycle. An alternative is the Mercedes-Benz GLE, which offers more rear-seat space and a slightly more comfortable ride, though we feel it will be too similar to your GLS, or the Lexus RX 500h, whose smooth and efficient hybrid powertrain is an excellent alternative to the established order.

I’m confused between the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 Petrol and the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Petrol for highway runs. Which one provides a flat, composed, and stable ride quality with confidence-inspiring high-speed dynamics and better NVH levels?

Verified
20w

Both the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 and GLS 450 are very comfortable and stable at high speeds. However, if you do not need the extra row of seats, the GLE would be a better bet. The GLE is a five-seater and hence is lighter by around 210kg. The GLE is also shorter in length, and the wheelbase makes it a bit more stable on the highways, especially over expansion joints. Both SUVs get air suspension and feature an inherently soft ride. But between the two, the GLE would be a bit more comfortable on the highway. Both SUVs have similar and excellent NVH performance and feature impressive cabin insulation. So with either one, you won't be disappointed.

Hello Autocar India, I want to buy the most powerful diesel SUV in India. My budget is between ₹1 crore and ₹1.5 crore, with about 50 % city and 50 % highway usage. I’m confused between the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450d and the BMW X5 - which one should I choose?

Verified
19w

Firstly, there is no Mercedes GLE 450d variant. There is a diesel 400d, but the variant you must be meaning is the Mercedes GLE 450 4MATIC petrol, which compares with the BMW X5 xDrive40i petrol. Both the Mercedes-Benz GLE450 and the BMW X5 are very closely matched in power, using 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engines with 48V mild-hybrid systems. The GLE 450 4MATIC produces 375-380hp whilst the BMW X5 xDrive40i produces a near identical 375-380hp. Top of FormThe BMW X5 has slightly higher torque at 520Nm to the GLE 450’s 500Nm, which contributes to a more sporty feel. In fact, the BMW X5 is known for a more sporty, engaging driving character, with quicker acceleration. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 delivers power in a very linear, smooth manner, prioritising comfort and luxury.

I’m looking to buy a luxury SUV and have shortlisted the Range Rover Velar, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. I’m also considering something from Mercedes‑Benz. Which one would you suggest?

Verified
36w

Without knowing your specific requirements, it is hard to give you a definitive pick. Of the options on your mind, the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE make for the most well-rounded luxury SUVs. They are spacious, well-equipped, comfortable and good to drive. The Range Rover Velar is big on style but isn't as roomy as the other SUVs. The Volvo XC90's firm ride and lesser refinement mark it down.

Which car is better between the Mercedes GLE 300d or the BMW X5 xLine D?

Verified
37w

While similarly priced as the entry-level versions of their respective model ranges, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d and BMW X5 xDrive30d xLine take two different approaches. The Mercedes-Benz uses a less powerful 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine, while the BMW retains the 3.0-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine. However, while the BMW sacrifices some features in this variant owing to the lesser xLine trim, the Mercedes comes in the fully loaded AMG Line trim. Thus, if you drive yourself even occasionally, the powerful 6-cylinder BMW will likely be the better choice for you, but if you're mainly chauffeur-driven, the Mercedes-Benz with its greater creature comforts and more spacious back seat is the better bet.

I am looking to buy a new car for my wife. She has been using a Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence for the past 6-7 years. She enjoys driving herself but also uses a chauffeur at times. Most of her travel is within the city, typically around 30-50 km per day. I currently drive a Range Rover Sport Autobiography. She prefers an SUV, so we are looking for something in that segment. Could you please suggest the best SUV options suitable for her usage?

Verified
17w

There are plenty of options to choose from - including your Range Rover Sport - which is good to drive and be driven in. However, since you already have one of those in the household, why not consider something different? Cars like the Mercedes GLE and BMW X5 are good options, but since her travel is primarily in the city, an interesting and often overlooked option is the Lexus RX. Unlike her Volvo, this is a strong hybrid, not a PHEV, so there's no need to plug it in to keep the battery topped up. It's also quite enjoyable to drive, offering a serene rear-seat experience when she is chauffeur-driven. Plus, Lexus's uniquely Japanese take on luxury is unlike any other in the segment and would feel like a meaningful change from the Volvo. As a strong hybrid, running costs will be very low, which is a bonus.
