I am 65 years old and will be superannuating from service soon. My current car is chauffeur-driven. I am now looking for a comfortable automatic car for city use that I can drive myself, with occasional long trips of up to 300 km. My budget is ₹8 lakh on-road. Please suggest suitable options.

There are quite a few automatic options within your budget. However, we'd narrow the list down to models with high seating, which are more convenient to get into and out of. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R would be the first model we'd recommend for you. Its high seating, excellent visibility and airy cabin are aspects you will appreciate. This Maruti car is easy to drive, and the brand’s hassle-free ownership is a plus in its own right. Opt for the AMT gearbox with the more powerful 1.2-litre petrol engine.
Within the Maruti line-up, you could also look at the Ignis AMT, though ride comfort is a bit harsh. Other alternatives with high seating include the Nissan Magnite AMT, Renault Kiger AMT and Tata Punch AMT.

I am looking for a compact car in the NCR to help my wife learn driving and for my elderly dad to use for short city runs. I want it to be reliable for 3-4 years. It should have good visibility and easy driving manners. I have a budget of about ₹5 lakh for a used car. I am looking for a petrol automatic, ideally a CVT. I have shortlisted the Honda Jazz but am worried about BS-IV issues during GRAP times. I am not yet ready to go electric. Should I still consider a used car, or should I stretch for a new one?

Buying a BS4 car in Delhi NCR is not a good idea, as you run the risk of being unable to use it when the AQI worsens and GRAP measures are implemented. This can disrupt your commutes and cause significant inconvenience. If you want to buy a used car, we suggest looking for a BS6 option or a vehicle that is no more than 5 years old.

You can visit spinny.com to see what is available. Ideally, you should stretch to a new car that is fully compliant with the latest regulations. This means it will also be designed to run on E20 fuel, unlike vehicles before 2023.

A Maruti-Suzuki Wagon R would be the ideal new car for you.  Its high seating position offers the double benefit of making learning to drive easier for beginners and making it easier for elderly people to get in and out. Wagon R prices range from Rs. 6-8 lakh, depending on the variant.

Hi, I am planning to buy a new petrol car for my parents, which will be mostly driven by my father. My budget is ₹8 to 8.5 lakh. I am also planning to sell the car later using an exchange offer. Should I buy the car in December 2025 or wait until next year? Should I go for an automatic or a manual? I prefer a high seat position!

Given that the car will be used primarily by your parents, ease of entry and exit, good visibility, and stress-free ownership are aspects we'd prioritise. The best option is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, which will fit your parents' requirements well.
We'd recommend the more powerful 1.2-litre engine that delivers stronger performance. Opting for an automatic depends on how open your father would be to switching to an auto. The switch from manual to auto requires a few days, as drivers need to get used to not using the left foot (it's best to keep the left leg folded over during this transition period to avoid inadvertently pressing the brake pedal). The benefit is a far more convenient driving experience. The Wagon R’s AMT automatic is worth checking out.
Other cars you could keep on your shortlist include the Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.

My elderly parents, who are over 80 years old, stay in a remote subdivision town. We need a car to visit doctors and occasionally go to relatives’ houses. The expected monthly travel is approximately 400 km. We want to invest in a budget-friendly car like a Wagon R. We once had a first-generation Alto, but had to sell it due to age. Please suggest a suitable car.

For your usage, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R can be an excellent choice. It is one of the most spacious budget cars, and its reliability is well documented.

Maruti has the most expansive service network; you won't find it difficult to find service stations, which can be an issue for other brands, as your parents live in a remote location.

The variant we recommend is the Wagon R VXi Manual with the 1.0-litre engine. The 1.2-litre engine is worth considering only if you frequently drive in hilly areas, as it makes uphill driving a bit more effortless.

I’m looking for a car for a daily commute of about 60 km and prefer CNG. I have shortlisted the Wagon R and Tiago. The Wagon R seems to offer much more value. What do you suggest?

If you are finding more value in the Maruti Wagon R, you should go ahead with this, as in the end, that is what matters to you. However, do bear in mind that the boot of the Wagon R is completely filled with the large single CNG tank and the spare tyre, thus leaving practically no space for even small bags.

The Tata Tiago CNG, on the other hand, has the spare tyre underneath the car and comes with a dual CNG cylinder setup which sits below the boot floor, thus leaving you with a decent amount of luggage space.

I am planning to buy the Wagon R ZXI next month since it is spacious. What is your opinion?

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is easily the most spacious car for the money. The high roof design frees up a lot of room and also makes getting in and out of the car very easy. Large windows also give great visibility and amplify the feeling of space inside. If a roomy cabin is what you are looking for, the Wagon R makes a great buy.

What is the major difference in driving feel between the WagonR 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre engines? The car will be used mostly in the city with an occasional monthly highway trip. I am also considering the Tata Tiago - any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

The 1.2-litre K-Series engine in the Maruti Wagon R makes it feel noticeably peppier and relatively more effortless than the 1.0-litre petrol version. Also, being a four-cylinder unit, it is a bit smoother and more refined as well.

Yes, the 1.0 will be a bit more efficient than the 1.2; however, if you like to drive and if it falls within your budget, quite simply go for the 1.2. The Tata Tiago has its strengths, like a good sound system, and better driving manners than a Wagon R; however, in terms of space, user-friendliness, smoothness and overall sales and support, the Maruti car is the one to go for.

I have been using a Wagon R CNG for the last 11 years with around 97,000 km on the odometer. I would now like to upgrade to an automatic. My preferences are safety, power and comfort. My budget is Rs 15 lakh, but I can stretch it to Rs 18 to 20 lakh. I am considering the Tata Sierra. Please suggest if there are any other alternatives.

The Tata Sierra seems to be a very promising car, and will certainly feel like a huge upgrade from you Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. We will be putting up our detailed review on 8th December, which will give you a better idea of what you can expect from the car as far as drive experience goes.

Please advise me on replacing my existing Santro Xing with a new automatic car. I am 66 years old and drive around 500 km a month.

Get a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT. Its tall-boy design makes getting in and out easy; furthermore, visibility all around is good, getting a judgment of all the corners of the car is a breeze thanks to its boxy body, and its light steering makes it very easy to drive and maneuver.
But if you want to upgrade within the Hyundai family, consider the Hyundai Exter AMT for its smoothness and tall stance.

I’m a first-time car buyer with no driving experience. I need an automatic petrol car with a 4-cylinder engine, good mileage, low maintenance costs, and a reliable engine. My budget is under ₹8 lakh. I drive about 30 km daily, split roughly 50% highway and 50% city. Please advise.

Within your budget, you have two Maruti Suzuki options, the Wagon R 1.2 ZXi AMT and the Ignis Delta AT

The Wagon R is the more practical choice with a roomier cabin and a larger boot, while the Ignis feels more premium inside and looks more stylish. Both use 1.2-litre four-cylinder engines, but they are not identical.

On paper, the Ignis makes 8 hp less than the Wagon R, yet in real use, there is little difference, and the Ignis' 1.2 litre K12 engine actually feels a bit more responsive at low speeds than the K12N in the Wagon R.
