I am looking for a compact car in the NCR to help my wife learn driving and for my elderly dad to use for short city runs. I want it to be reliable for 3-4 years. It should have good visibility and easy driving manners. I have a budget of about ₹5 lakh for a used car. I am looking for a petrol automatic, ideally a CVT. I have shortlisted the Honda Jazz but am worried about BS-IV issues during GRAP times. I am not yet ready to go electric. Should I still consider a used car, or should I stretch for a new one?

Buying a BS4 car in Delhi NCR is not a good idea, as you run the risk of being unable to use it when the AQI worsens and GRAP measures are implemented. This can disrupt your commutes and cause significant inconvenience. If you want to buy a used car, we suggest looking for a BS6 option or a vehicle that is no more than 5 years old.

You can visit spinny.com to see what is available. Ideally, you should stretch to a new car that is fully compliant with the latest regulations. This means it will also be designed to run on E20 fuel, unlike vehicles before 2023.

A Maruti-Suzuki Wagon R would be the ideal new car for you.  Its high seating position offers the double benefit of making learning to drive easier for beginners and making it easier for elderly people to get in and out. Wagon R prices range from Rs. 6-8 lakh, depending on the variant.

Hi. Thanks for supporting and guiding. I have budget of 10 lakhs on road price. I am looking to purchase for occasional/weekend city drives only and very limited highway trips. I am also looking to buy automatic car since My wife will also use and she is new to driving and she will prefer that. My preference are Good Mileage, Basic good features, good interiors and exterior look. Will buy week to avail year end discount. I was looking after Exter, punch. Also open to other options. Pls suggest.

You can consider the Hyundai Exter AMT. It comes with one of the smoothest AMTs in the segment, offers a comfortable ride and has precise handling. The Exter feels stable and confident on the highway, while on the highway, it is easy to maneuver in city traffic. It is also well equipped, with a thoughtfully designed cabin that makes excellent use of the available space.

I want to buy an automatic car with good ground clearance and low maintenance. I want to know your advice on the Tata Sierra, and please suggest other makes and models as well.

You can go for the Tata Sierra, it is packed with features and looks and feels very premium. The engine to go for in Sierra is the 1.5 turbo-petrol unit, which is strong and smooth, and the handling is confident, making everyday driving enjoyable. Its unladen ground clearance is 205mm, which means it can handle even large speed breakers with ease. Though Tata products are not particularly known for being reliable, Tata Motors is working on improving overall ownership and customer experience. Sierra is manufactured at the Sanand plant, which Tata Motors acquired from Ford, and the quality processes and manufacturing culture there should help improve long-term reliability.

I’m looking to own a car that is reliable, has good resale value, and low maintenance cost. It should have high torque and be punchy, with good handling and a rugged body. My budget is up to ₹20 lakh. Please suggest.

These two cars are very different, so it depends on your preference. The Citroen Basalt X is a natural upgrade from your Polo, offering fantastic ride and handling, a strong 1.2 turbo-petrol engine, and a pleasure to drive. However, compared to the Tata Sierra, the Basalt feels a couple of segments down. It is nowhere near as well-equipped, and in fact, the Sierra’s most significant selling point is all the tech on offer, which includes three digital screens for the infotainment system, a top-notch audio system, ADAS features and a lot more. Also, the Sierra is more spacious and solidly built. Being an SUV, the Sierra is not as agile as the Basalt, but it's still a pleasure to drive and hence overall fits your needs better.
