My budget is Rs 20 lakh. I am looking for an all-wheel-drive car as I frequently travel to the mountains and need a safe, comfortable and reliable family car. Safety, comfort and reliability are my top priorities.

There are not many AWD or 4x4 vehicles that meet all your requirements perfectly, but there are some to consider. Your best option is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, the ZXI Plus AWD AT variant, although you will have to stretch your budget slightly.
It is a 5-star rated car from both Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP, so you're well covered on safety, and overall, it is a well equipped and comfortable family car. As a bonus, it comes with Maruti's renowned reliability and low running costs.
Alternatively, you could consider the Mahindra Thar Roxx, the MX5 2.2 Diesel MT 4x4 variant, which is also safe and offers more space and a more robust 4x4 system, but it's not as reliable or comfortable as the Maruti Suzuki.
Or you could look at the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which is a capable off-roader and falls easily in your budget, but it is not as comfortable, and its small size makes it less practical as a family car.

I’m choosing between two cars - the MUV Kia Carens Clavis and the SUV Mahindra Thar ROXX. My ownership horizon is 5 years with an annual running of 10,000-15,000 km, and I have a family of five. I like both vehicles, but need advice: which one would you recommend and which would you avoid, and why? Please consider practicality, space and comfort for five passengers, running costs, safety, and long-term suitability.

As I'm sure you know, these are both very different vehicles, but the good news is that each one is very capable in its own right. Both offer petrol and diesel engines, as well as manual and automatic gearboxes, so you should be able to find a variant that suits you.

The Kia Carens Clavis is the more sensible option, with more fuel-efficient engines, a more spacious cabin - even if you only use 5 of the 7 seats - and better features. However, it's not very exciting.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx, on the other hand, is the more emotional choice, with more power and performance, and great road presence. However, its ride is not comfortable, and because of its high floor height, entering and exiting is not easy for elderly people.

Your usage is not extremely high, so you could choose the Thar if you are prepared to live with its shortcomings.

I work in real estate and currently drive a Mahindra TUV300 T8 (2016). It has been reliable and gives me around 17 kmpl. I drive 100-150 km daily and need something rugged and bad-road friendly. I often take rough paths, and because of the lack of a 4x4, I got stuck on multiple occasions. What should I upgrade to?

Since you haven't mentioned your budget, it'll be difficult to recommend the right car for you. That said, the Mahindra Scorpio N and Thar Roxx seem like a logical upgrade from your current vehicle. Both of these Mahindra cars feel more modern, more refined, and polished.

I currently own a 4x4 Thar petrol AT. I’m confused between the Thar Roxx and the Tata Sierra. The Sierra looks premium, but the Thar’s ruggedness gives me peace of mind in traffic, water-logging, and bad roads. The Sierra has many screens and touch panels, and I’m unsure how they will age over time. Which one should I pick?

On the question of Tata Sierra reliability, only time will tell. That said, the Sierra appears to be one of Tata’s best-finished products yet and is appealing not just in its exterior design but also in its fit and finish, interior quality, space, practicality, and features.
As for choosing between the Tata Sierra and the Mahindra Thar Roxx, you are right that the Roxx is more rugged and will handle waterlogging better. However, in most other areas, the Sierra will be the stronger choice. Its monocoque construction will give it a more comfortable ride, and it will be easier to drive in traffic and park, too.
If you are considering a more comfortable and practical Mahindra, the XUV700 is also a strong option, and a facelift is around the corner, which may be worth waiting for.

I'm a 26-year-old planning my first car purchase. I'm smitten by the Thar Roxx for its looks and practicality, but high petrol running costs and the 10-year diesel ban worry me. I plan to do road trips all over India and have a maximum budget of ₹18 lakh on-road. Which safe, powerful vehicle would you recommend within this budget? Also, are there any upcoming launches worth waiting for - I can wait until April 2027 when CAFE-3 norms kick in.

Yes, the Mahindra Thar Roxx, in diesel guise, and especially in petrol guise, is not fuel-efficient. One car worth considering is the recently revealed Tata Sierra, which is likely to be available with multiple petrol engine options. And given Tata cars' recent track record of high NCAP crash test ratings, you can expect a good rating from the Sierra as well.

You could also wait for the next-gen Kia Seltos. It is expected to launch by late 2025 or early 2026. The new model is likely to be larger and more spacious than the current version. There are also rumours of a hybrid powertrain, which could be the answer to your long-distance road trips.

There will be many more new launches before April 2027, including models that haven’t been revealed yet. So if you’re not in a hurry, waiting could give you even better options.

I'm looking to replace my 2017 Duster. I do a lot of highway driving, city runs, and around 10–15% off-road/poor roads. I need space for four people, luggage, and two Labradors. What should I buy?

It would depend on your budget and how far you are willing to stretch it, but good options would be the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Mahindra Scorpio N (5 seater). They're both tough, ladder frame SUVs with strong petrol and diesel engines, that are great on the highway and perfect for rough roads.

With spacious cabins and big luggage areas with split-folding rear seats, your dogs will have enough room and easy access. Of the two, we would recommend the Thar Roxx as it is the newer of the two and, as such, is better equipped, and slightly better engineered. Plus, its split-opening tailgate feature could be a nice way to give your dogs some ventilation while still being safely inside the car.

I’m looking to upgrade to a new car. My monthly usage is around 1,000 km, mainly for city commuting as a college student. My budget is ₹10-15 lakh, and I’m considering the Mahindra Thar 4x2 or the new Hyundai Venue diesel.

Between the two, we definitely recommend the new Hyundai Venue diesel. Being a monocoque compact SUV, it’s likely to be more comfortable, easier to drive, and more efficient than the Mahindra Thar or Thar Roxx.
Between the two Thar versions, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is the better choice as it’s more practical and comfortable for daily use.

I am single and looking for a fast, comfortable 4x4. I currently own a Thar but want something better. One vehicle that can do it all: high-speed highway cruising, off-roading, travel anywhere, and remain reliable, comfortable, and no-nonsense.

At a slightly higher budget, the Mahindra Thar Roxx fits your requirements well. It’s far more comfortable than the three-door Thar, both in seating and ride quality. While the ride is still a bit firm, it’s significantly better than the three-door version. It also offers a large boot. Overall, the Thar Roxx is a versatile SUV that suits your needs for highway cruising, off-roading, and everyday use.

My current car will complete 15 years in February 2026, and I am looking for a suitable replacement. I am an Army officer and will be buying through the CSD. I want an SUV with an automatic transmission and an on-road price between ₹18–20 lakh. Please advise.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a good option for you. It suits your job role well and comes with smooth diesel and petrol engines, both paired with equally smooth automatic transmissions.

If a 4x4 is not a strict requirement, the 4x2 version is still very capable. On top of that, it will be a bit more fuel-efficient, making it a practical choice for daily use as well. Mahindra Thar Roxx price starts at ₹16.81 Lakh (on-road) in Noida for the automatic transmission variants, which falls within your price range.
