I am currently using a 2017 Creta 1.6 diesel manual, and I love its pickup and overall driving feel. I have clocked 85,000 km so far, and my driving is mixed city and highway. I am now planning to buy a new automatic car. My requirements are good driving dynamics, a comfortable interior, and generous boot space because my kids are over 6 ft tall. I prefer diesel because I enjoy diesel performance on the highway, and cruise control is a must. Please advise. Thank you.

First things first, you should know that some of the punch that you like about your Hyundai Creta's diesel engines is missing on modern day diesel engines. Engine calibration to meet the latest BS6 emission norms has, sadly, taken away that mid-range kick older turbo-diesels were known for. However, there are still some great diesel-automatic options available today.

Among compact SUVs, the new Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO are worth a look. In the mid-sized SUV space, the new Tata Sierra, new Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta make for good, if unexciting, long-distance diesel SUVs.

If your budget allows, you should consider the upcoming Mahindra XUV 7XO in diesel-automatic form. The engine-gearbox will be carried over from the current XUV 700.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a smooth and strong unit and is really well complemented by the 6-speed automatic transmission. It is our pick of the diesel-automatic options.

Hi, I am planning to choose between the Kylaq Signature Plus Automatic and the Sonet HTX DCT. Around 70% of my driving will be between Delhi and Gurgaon in heavy traffic, and the remaining 30% will be on highways. Which of these two cars would suit my usage better? I plan to keep the car for at least 10 years and would prefer something that is lighter on maintenance and ownership costs.

In your case, the Skoda Kylaq is a better choice for several reasons. Firstly, the Kylaq’s 1.0 TSI engine and 6AT automatic gearbox work better than the Sonet’s 1.0 TGDi and DCT combination. Being a torque converter, the Kylaq’s automatic gearbox is smoother in heavy traffic, and it's quite responsive too.
The Sonet’s DCT is not as smooth, and there’s a bit of lag in the response when you float it. Also, for highway driving, the Kylaq feels more planted and stable at high speeds and has better overall dynamics than the Kia Sonet.

Hi Autocar experts! I’m a first-time buyer with a strict ₹13 lakh budget and need an automatic car (not AMT). I have shortlisted the Hyundai Venue 2025 HX5 DCT variant. Is it good value for money within my budget? What are the pros and cons of the HX5 DCT variant? Do you have any other suggestions?

The Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT is a good package, but it is on the pricey side by segment standards.

The HX5 variant does get reasonable features, but we would urge you to consider the HX6 version. While the price gap from the HX5 to HX6 is significant, the HX6 does get essential safety features like a rear wiper, adjustable rear headrests and wider tyres. Of course, the jump to HX6 also brings in more comfort features such as a rear armrest and auto climate control, among others.

Alternatively, you could consider the Kia Sonet Turbo DCT HTX, Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5 and Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo Zeta, all of which offer good automatic gearboxes. Also pack in plenty of comfort and safety features within your Rs 13 lakh budget.

Hi. I have been driving a Ford Figo for the last 13-15 years, and it has done only about 65,000 km, which shows how little I drive. This is mostly city driving. I am not a driving enthusiast and drive only because I have to. My family says it’s time to change and get a new car. We have been test-driving a few in the ₹15 lakh on-road price range. The ones we have shortlisted are the Kia Syros DCT and Hyundai Venue DCT. We also checked the Honda Bassalt and Skoda Kylaq.

For the family, the Kia Syros DCT is the most appropriate simply because the Syros has the most spacious cabin. The rear seats in particular are comfortable, offering more headroom and legroom than the Kia Sonet and Skoda Kylaq

The Syros is also superbly equipped, feels quite premium and has a large boot. The only issue is that the Syros pricing is a bit too high for a sub-4 metre SUV and not the best value.

Hi, I own a Wagon R 2015 model and now wish to upgrade to a new car. My priorities are a big boot and a powerful engine, with a monthly drive of around 500 km. The car should be under ₹15 lakh on road - kindly guide me on which car I should go for.

The car that best suits your budget and requirements is actually the Kia Sonet. It has the biggest boot in this price bracket of compact SUVs, and the wide boot opening and good depth make it best for loading luggage.

The 1.0 Turbo-petrol engine packs 120hp and is mated to a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox, which provides good performance and is quite powerful. The HTX variant will easily fit your budget and comes with essential features. But if you can stretch your budget to the GTX variant, which is around Rs 16 lakh, you get useful features like ADAS and a 360-degree camera.

My budget is ₹14 lakh, and I want to buy an automatic car. Please suggest which is the better option among the Kia Sonet, Mahindra 3XO, and Hyundai Venue. I do a round trip of about 600 km to my hometown once every 4-5 months, and the rest of my driving is within the city. I am looking for good mileage, good boot space, and comfortable seating for three people in the rear.

One of the weaknesses of the Mahindra XUV 3XO is poor boot space for its class, and hence we would rule it out since boot space is one of your requirements. The Kia Sonet has the maximum boot space, but the Hyundai Venue is almost as good and overall is a better car after its recent upgrade a few months ago.
You can opt for the 1.0 turbo petrol with the DCT option, which will serve you well both in the city and on the highway. Since all the options you have listed are compact SUVs, rear seat space is not the best, and though three passengers are manageable, it will be a tight squeeze.

Hi Experts, I have a daily running of about 80-85 km, with a mix of city and highway. I am a first-time buyer and need a reliable car with essential features and a good engine within a ₹10-12 lakh budget. I’m open to any fuel option that suits my needs. Please suggest some good options to consider. I had the Tata Altroz diesel and Kia Sonet diesel in mind.

Given your requirements, we would recommend you opt for the Kia Sonet diesel. The car will likely be more reliable, and the Kia diesel engine delivers a good mix of refinement and performance. It's also very well equipped and, with the SUV body style, will give you a better view of the road outside. Do bear in mind, though, that the rear seat space is quite limited, so we would suggest you personally check to see if this is ok with you.

Hi team, my monthly driving is around 1,000 km. I want to buy a diesel car, and my budget is Rs 17 lakh. Please help me select the right vehicle. I am open to both manual and automatic options.

There are quite a few diesel-manual options available within your budget. You could go for a smaller but more feature-equipped vehicle or a larger, more powerful but less-equipped vehicle. Of the smaller vehicles within your budget, the Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO should be on your shortlist. Among the larger vehicles, the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra XUV700 are worth a look.

As for automatic gearbox options, the best pick would be the Kia Sonet diesel GTX+ AT. The refined 1.5-litre diesel engine and smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission work really well together to deliver a premium driving experience. Hyundai also offers the same combo on the new Venue, though you'll need to up your budget to get a feature-equipped model.

I currently own a premium hatchback (Baleno) and want to upgrade to an automatic SUV, but I’m unsure which model suits me best. My priorities are strong engine performance, seating comfort and legroom, and reasonable fuel efficiency (about 12-14 km/l in Bangalore city). My budget is ₹15-20 lakh. Which reliable brands and models offer low maintenance costs while meeting these requirements?

Expecting 12-14kpl in peak Bangalore traffic from an automatic SUV is a bit optimistic, and if you really want that kind of efficiency, you will have to look at diesel alternatives.

Consider a Kia Sonet or Hyundai Venue diesel AT for its smooth transmission and refined diesel engine. The Tata Nexon diesel is efficient too, although its AMT isn't as smooth as its Korean rivals.

I am moving on from a manual Tata Nexon and have test-driven the Renault Kiger Turbo Emotion and the Kia Sonet HTK Plus iMT. The Kiger is fully loaded, looks modern and has a good feel, while the Sonet offers a sunroof, iMT useful for city driving, and stronger overall road and brand presence. I’m confused because the Sonet seems like a better car but feels outdated, and the Kiger is very cool and feature-rich but might have poorer resale or other issues. Please advise.

You're right, the Renault Kiger is a modern car which is decently equipped, but its resale value isn't as strong as some other options in this segment. The Kia Sonet feels more polished overall, and it will get you more features too.

Yes, the iMT is convenient, but try getting a proper automatic instead, which will be a far more convenient and smoother option. If you want something a bit more modern, the Hyundai Venue is also an option you must consider. The Mahindra XUV3XO is also a compact SUV you may consider.
