We like

  • Practical, comfortable and well-finished interior

  • Brisk performance even with a full load

We don't like

  • Not ideal for long distance travel

  • Significantly pricier than ICE Clavis

Exterior Design And Engineering

8.0

The Kia Carens Clavis EV doesn’t radically change the MPV’s shape but introduces EV-specific styling cues that set it apart from its petrol/diesel siblings. A glowing light bar above the grille, a central charging flap, new active-aero bumper elements and aero-optimised 17-inch wheels give the EV a purposeful yet familiar look. The bonnet hides a 25-litre frunk useful for storing charging cables.

Underneath, the EV shares much with the Creta Electric’s architecture, with the battery pack tucked within the wheelbase, helping maintain usable interior packaging. Two battery options are offered: a 42 kWh pack with 135 hp/255 Nm and a 51.4 kWh Extended Range version with 171 hp/255 Nm, both driving the front wheels.

Interior Space And Comfort

8.0

Inside, the Clavis EV cabin feels familiar to anyone who has sat in the ICE version, with a smart dash and twin-screen layout. EV-specific touches include a floating centre console with integrated cupholders and controls for ventilation and drive modes. A roomy feel and good ergonomics continue to define the interior.

Seats are comfortable with partial power adjustment for the front row, and the steering offers rake and reach adjustment. The middle row remains flexible and comfortable, with 60:40 split sliding seats and generous recline. A powered seat tumble makes access to the third row effortless.

The third row is usable for average-sized adults, and boot space with all seats up accommodates soft bags. Folding the rear rows expands luggage space for longer trips or bulky loads.

Performance And Refinement

8.0

In extended range form, the Clavis EV feels brisk for an MPV, with Kia claiming a 0-100 km/h time of about 8.4 seconds — impressive for a seven-seater electric family mover. Power delivery is smooth with plenty of low-end pull, making overtaking and loaded cruising easy. Normal mode delivers more than adequate performance for everyday use, and even Eco mode feels competent.

Cabin refinement is a highlight. The EV’s electric drivetrain is quiet, and road and wind noise are well contained, creating a serene environment that complements relaxed cruising and family conversations.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

7.0

Official figures state up to 404 km range for the 42 kWh version and 490 km for the larger battery, though real-world testing during the Autocar India review put the Extended Range’s practical range closer to 320-350 km, especially on hilly roads. DC fast charging can bring the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 39 minutes, and AC charging to full takes around 4-4.75 hours depending on pack size.

This makes the Clavis EV well suited to daily drives and moderate highway runs, though it may not be ideal for frequent long-distance travel without planning around charging stops.

Ride Comfort And Handling

7.0

The Clavis EV’s ride comfort remains a strength despite the extra weight of the battery pack. Kia has retuned the suspension to handle the mass, and the result is a composed ride that softens most road imperfections. Sharp speed breakers can cause a firm impact before the suspension settles, but overall comfort for passengers across all three rows is good.

Steering is light and easy, aiding city driving and low-speed manoeuvres, while higher-speed stability feels assured. Regen braking, adjustable via paddleshifters, works well with adaptive cruise to modulate speed and can even enable a one-pedal driving feel at its strongest setting.

Features And Safety

8.0

The Clavis EV inherits the Carens’ feature list, with a generous offering of tech and convenience equipment. Higher trims get dual high-res screens, a 360-degree camera and advanced driver aids, while the EV’s adaptive systems work well with regen and cruise control for a relaxed driving experience.

Safety gear includes multiple airbags, stability control and parking aids, making it competitive for its segment.

Kia Carens Clavis EV FAQs

Yes, the Kia Carens Clavis EV offers a practical real-world range for most buyers. In our real-world tests, the 51.4kWh version delivered a combined range of around 364km per charge, making it well suited to daily commuting while also offering enough range for occasional intercity journeys without frequent charging stops.

Yes, the Kia Carens Clavis EV is brisk by MPV standards. Kia claims a 0-100kph time of 8.4 seconds, and the electric motor delivers strong, immediate acceleration that makes overtaking easy. Performance remains adequate even with all three rows occupied, giving it a more responsive character than many conventional MPVs.

Yes. The Kia Carens Clavis EV has a well-packaged battery that avoids the raised, knees-up seating position common in many EVs. It also gets a one-touch powered tumble function for easier third-row access, while the last row offers enough space for two average-sized adults on shorter to medium journeys.

For most buyers, the Kia Carens Clavis EV is the better value. While the BYD eMax 7 offers larger battery options, more range and higher outputs, its price premium of around Rs 9 lakh is substantial. Kia's wider sales and service network further strengthens the Kia Carens Clavis EV's appeal.

The Kia Carens Clavis EV prioritises ride comfort over outright handling. Its suspension absorbs broken roads and expansion joints well, while remaining composed despite the added weight of the battery pack. Although there is some float at higher speeds, the Kia Carens Clavis EV maintains a comfortable and predictable ride suited to family use.

I want to upgrade from a Tata Nexon EV Max to a seven-seater SUV. Having used the EV for almost 4 years, I have experienced how economical it is and would like to go for another EV. One of the best options I am considering is the Mahindra XEV 9S. However, I am not sure whether it is really worth the price, as I don't feel comfortable spending over Rs. 30 lakh on a Mahindra. Are there any better options I should consider? Please advise.

The Mahindra XEV 9S is a genuinely impressive product, but yes, at over Rs 30 lakh, it is a significant outlay, and the question is less about whether the car is worth the money and more about whether it is the right fit for you. The XEV 9S offers strong performance, a well-appointed cabin, and a premium feel, but if you would still like to avoid a Mahindra, opt for the Kia Carens Clavis EV. It does not offer you that SUV stance, but its MPV configuration means a flexible interior and a genuinely usable third row too. It's also well appointed inside with a premium look and feel around the cabin, with all the essential and some nice-to-have features too.

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy my first EV. I was initially considering the Tata Punch EV, but I'm 6'4" tall, and I found the driver's seat and overall driving position a bit cramped for longer drives. I'm open to stretching my budget a little if it means getting a more comfortable car. My requirements are: comfortable for a 6'4" driver, real-world driving range of around 350 km, good value for money, suitable for both city driving and occasional highway trips. What would you recommend? I'd also love to hear from tall owners about their experience with cabin space and driving comfort. Thanks in advance!

Verified
2w

The Tata Punch EV is a great value proposition, but at 6'4", you are already experiencing its biggest limitation: cabin space. The driving position in this Tata car is upright, and the seat does not go low enough, which can become uncomfortable on longer drives. Since you are willing to stretch your budget, the MG Windsor EV is the better fit. It offers a significantly more spacious cabin, a wider and more comfortable seat, and a more relaxed driving position. Range is one aspect where this MG car doesn't really hit the 350km mark. Around 300km is what you can expect in normal driving conditions. Highway trips will have to be planned well. The screen inside dominates the dashboard. It is a more premium product than the Punch EV, but the extra spend is justified by the comfort and space. The other option is the new Kia Syros EV. It might seem compact, but the interior is surprisingly spacious, even for tall adults. The battery is a 51.4kWh unit from the bigger Clavis EV, so 400km in one charge should be possible. The rear seat space is also excellent, and the quality of the cabin, along with the usability of day-to-day functions, makes it a very strong contender.

I am looking to buy a 6/7-seater electric car. I am currently inclined towards the Mahindra XEV 9e, but I am unsure about its ride quality and suspension comfort. I have also considered the Kia Clavis EV, but its smaller battery pack and overall design are not very appealing to me. I can also wait for the Tata Safari EV if it is likely to be a better option. Which EV would you recommend?

Verified
2w

Go for the Mahindra XEV 9S. It is the best fit for your requirement of a 6/7-seater EV. The Mahindra car has a large battery pack, strong performance and a well-sorted suspension setup. Mahindra has tuned the suspension to handle Indian roads well, and it feels stable and comfortable even with a full load of passengers. The Kia Carens Clavis EV is a good family EV, and is more suited only if you have adults in the third row more often. Interestingly, the Kia's third-row is more spacious and comfier than the XEV's. However, the Kia's smaller battery limits its range and long-distance usability. The Tata Safari EV is still some time away and is worth waiting for only if you are specifically looking for a larger, spacious three-row EV.

Hi Autocar, I currently drive a 2015 Honda City petrol and am planning to replace it with a 7-seater that I intend to keep for the next 10 years. My annual running is around 10,000km, with approximately 8,000km in the city and 2,000km on highways. My budget is Rs. 25-30 lakh. I also have rooftop solar and a dedicated home charging setup, so an EV is an option. Since I am a business owner, I can also claim depreciation benefits on an EV. Please suggest a car.

Given your annual running of around 10,000km, with 8,000km in the city and only 2,000km on the highway, the Kia Carens Clavis EV makes the most sense. Since you have solar and can set up charging at home, running costs will be very low. Also, Since most of your driving is in the city, the Clavis EV suits your usage well. It also offers a modern, comfortable cabin, a usable third row for adults, and well-established aftersales network of Kia cars should make it a dependable choice for long-term ownership. The drawback of an Electric car is your highway trips will need more planning for charging stops. If you regularly travel to destinations where charging infrastructure is limited, the Toyota Innova Hycross would be the better alternative.

I am looking for a car with at least 4 -5 star safety rating. My preference is a 7-seater car as occasionally I travel with my extended family. My daily commute is from Dadar to Malad in peak traffic and I return late from work at night. We have a second house in Virar where we travel over the weekend and therefore I need a bigger car, mostly an suv. My average running is approximately between 700 km and 1000km. I am also concerned about the E20 fuel since I am planning to use the car for minimum 8 to 9 years. In worst case situation, I am ready to compromise to a 5-seater car with spacious rear seats and am giving serious thought to an EV as well. I currently own a 2021 Kwid RXT AMT petrol and need to upgrade as it is very small and it is difficult to travel to long distances with full load. Also, I am not sure whether ADAS would work in bumper-to-bumper traffic or highway, but at least a blind view monitor or alerts would be helpful. Please suggest best options as I am flexible to stretch my budget upto 22 lakhs at max.

Based on your requirements, the Kia Carens Clavis petrol DCT is the most sensible recommendation. Your running of 700-1,000 km a month does not justify a diesel, and the Carens is a comfortable 7-seater that will serve you well over an 8-9 year ownership period. The one downside with this powertrain is that the DCT can feel a bit hesitant, which you will notice on your commute. If you can install a charger at home, the Clavis EV is a superb fit for your needs. It has the same practical cabin as the ICE car, but the electric car will feel a lot better to drive in stop and go traffic. Your budget will only get you the 42kWh battery which should give you a real world range of around 300-320km.If you aren't going to use the third row that often then the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Strong Hybrid is a great choice for your needs. In heavy traffic it will run on EV mode cutting down fuel cost significantly. It is also very easy and smooth to drive in bumper to bumper traffic. On the E20 fuel concern, modern petrol engines are engineered to handle E20 blends, and there is no official roadmap beyond E20 at this stage. The main impact is a slight reduction in fuel economy.
