•4dI currently own an Audi A4 Premium Plus Petrol and have been using it for the last three years. The car has now crossed the 50,000 km mark. I am now confused about whether I should continue using the same car for a few more years or upgrade to a newer German luxury SUV within a budget of around ₹60-65 lakh.

Autocar India
With 50,000km covered in 3 years, the smarter move is to keep your Audi A4 for another couple of years unless you clearly need a taller car for rough roads or easier entry. At this age and mileage, a well-serviced and carefully driven A4 still has plenty of life. It is quiet and smooth on highways, and you avoid another big hit in value right now.The other issue is that, on a budget of Rs 60-65 lakh, your only available SUV options from the German luxury brands are compact SUVs like the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, which will feel like a downgrade from your A4 in terms of size and space. You will have to up your budget by at least Rs 10 lakh to move into the next segment of luxury SUVs. Better alternatives, if you don't mind a non-luxury badge, are the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. They offer similar quality levels to their more luxurious counterparts, as well as equitable levels of comfort and refinement. They even use the same EA888 2.0-litre petrol engine as your A4. What's more, for much less money, you get far more space and an even longer list of features. You sacrifice some snob value, but you get a more rounded product.

•2wHello sir, my name is Dr. Ashish Lashkari, and despite being in the healthcare industry, my passion for automobiles is no less than my profession. I currently drive a Jeep Compass Petrol Automatic, which I purchased in 2018 and have driven around 85,000 km since then. Now, I want to upgrade to something better, and my options are a used Mercedes, a BMW, or the new Mahindra XEV 9e. My usage is around 25% city driving and 75% highway driving with family. Petrol is no longer my preferred choice, as the poor fuel efficiency of the Jeep has been quite frustrating. Please suggest what would be the best option for me. Thank you so much in advance.

Autocar India
If you are looking for a good used luxury car, check out the Mercedes GLA or the BMW X1. Stick with the current generation models and look for the one that is around 4 to 5 years old. You can consider buying from organized pre owned car sellers like Spinny. You may pay a bit more than the open market but you will get cars that are thoroughly checked and with warranty too. If you are looking at the Mahindra XEV 9E, make sure you have a provision to charge it at home or your place of work as relying solely on the public network isn't really feasible. Also, if your highway runs are more than 350 odd kms and involve mountain roads, you might have to stop for a charge too. So make sure your route has plenty of charging options.

•10wHi, I am planning to purchase a new car within a budget of ₹50-60 lakh. I really like the Audi A4, but I am concerned about its ground clearance of around 165 mm, which may be slightly low for Indian road conditions. I have also looked at the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine. Could you suggest other cars in this price range that I should consider? I am mainly looking for a good value-for-money luxury car with strong features and overall ownership value.

Autocar India
All the cars you have shortlisted, being sedans, have similar ground clearance, and for all practical purposes, the Audi A4 is no worse off than the other two. In fact, in our testing, it was the Mercedes-Benz A-Class limousine that required the most care over speed breakers. If ground clearance is a high priority, consider an SUV like the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3 or BMW X1. However, if you want to stick with a sedan, the Audi A4 is the most value for money. Not only is it larger and more spacious than the others, it also has the most comfortable suspension. What's more, its 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo petrol is larger and more powerful than the engines on offer in the 2 Series and A-Class, and the most refined among them too. Given your budget, however, you could even consider an Audi A6; check if your local Audi dealer is offering any discounts, and it could fit within the outer limits of your budget.

•13wHello, I want to convert my BMW X1 petrol model (2011) into an electric vehicle. Please suggest the best EV conversion kit and a reliable company that can carry out the installation. Thanks.

Autocar India
Converting a petrol car to an electric one is a complex process that requires a lot of engineering and expertise, and it will be very expensive to do so. It is not as simple as just swapping out the engine for an electric motor. The process involves removing the engine, fuel tank, exhaust system, and other components and replacing them with an electric motor, batteries, and other components. Even after all this, the car's wiring, suspension, and other systems need to be modified to work with and accommodate the new powertrain.Basically its as good as re-engineering the entire car, and frankly, no one can do this reliably at this point. Thus, we would not recommend a conversion, especially so on a car that is complex and advanced like the BMW X1. Plus, there is also the legality of the car to consider, as the registration details would not match. You should trade in your X1 for the new iX1, as BMW will certainly have some exchange offers to make.

•14wI want to buy a premium 5- or 7-seater, and my budget is around 50 lakhs. I am open to both EVs and ICE vehicles. Though I have thoroughly considered the BYD Sealion 7 as one of the best picks, I would love to know what other premium cars I could get at this price.

Autocar India
There are quite a few types of vehicles available within your budget, and it comes down to what you specifically want and like in your new car. SUVs like the BMW X1 and the iX1, or a three-row version like the Volkswagen Tayron. You can also look at a sedan like the Toyota Camry, which is comfortable inside and offers a strong hybrid powertrain. However, if you are liking the BYD Sealion 7, we would say go ahead with it as it offers a very differentiated appeal with a modern, tech laden interior that's high on quality. The electric powertrain calibration is also very good, and it offers a smooth, strong and progressive drive experience.

•17wI want to upgrade to an SUV and am confused between the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, and BMW X1. Should I choose one of these models or consider some other car?

Autocar India
Each of these three SUVs offers something different and also costs hugely different amounts - each one represents an increase of almost Rs 10 lakh from the other. The BMW X1 is the one to go for if you simply must have a luxury badge, but for the hefty price you pay, it is not very spacious, powerful or well-equipped. At the other end, the Jeep Meridian is a great value for money, and offers an upmarket cabin, a tough chassis with some off-roading ability, and decent badge value. However, its diesel engine is gruff, and space is not immense. The Skoda Kodiaq strikes the best balance of luxury, space, practicality, refinement and value for money - and now comes in 5- or 7-seat layouts. This should be the SUV you pick, though note that, given it is a large SUV with a turbocharged petrol engine, fuel bills can get quite high.

•25wI’m considering whether to buy a used car or a new car after driving my current vehicle for 10 more years. I’m thinking about getting a BMW or Audi hatchback in good condition. What are your thoughts?

Autocar India
You will not find many used BMW and Audi cars (hatchbacks) in India because very few were ever sold.BMW did offer the 1 Series hatchback for a short time, but the numbers were still limited.Instead, it’s better to explore their small SUVs like the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1. If you are open to Mercedes-Benz cars, you can also check the A-Class or B-Class hatchbacks, though these too are rare, or consider the Mercedes GLA. When buying a premium used car, though, make sure you buy from the brand itself, as they all have an approved used program. You can also buy one from a very reputable reseller, and if things go wrong, it can be very expensive to fix.

•25wI am looking to replace my 2021 Tucson. My current usage is not more than 1,000 km a month, mostly on the highway. My budget is ₹50-60 lakh, and I have shortlisted the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. Looking for your guidance.

Autocar India
We'd recommend you narrow down your options to the Mercedes GLA 220d and Q3, both of which have strong powertrains and are a touch nicer to drive than the BMW X1.Between the two, the Mercedes-Benz car has a more well-appointed cabin and a spacious interior. The Audi Q3's cabin is also high on quality, although it lacks flair. Where the Q3 shines is the ride comfort. Go for the Mercedes if you are willing to pick a diesel engine - you will appreciate the 220d's effortless performance on the highway. However, if you need a petrol, the Audi Q3's turbo petrol is far superior to what Mercedes and BMW offer, hence it gets our vote.

•27wI am confused between the Mercedes GLA and BMW X1. Which one offers the latest features and a better servicing experience?

Autocar India
Both the Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 offer a strong list of features. You get auto LED headlamps, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, connected car tech, ambient lighting, and even some ADAS features on both cars. The Mercedes has an advantage with a 360-degree camera. The BMW gets only a rear-view camera but offers lane-departure warning, which the Mercedes does not. After that, the choice mainly comes down to interior and exterior design and the way the features are laid out. The BMW’s i-Drive infotainment system is known to be notoriously complicated to use. It should also be noted that the Mercedes has more powerful engines than the BMW. As for service, it is highly dependent on your location and the specific service centre. Both brands reportedly have both good and bad service centres around the country.

•30wSir, I currently own two cars, a 2022 XUV700 diesel manual and a 2024 BMW X1 diesel. We are a family of five, and I plan to keep only one car since maintaining two is becoming difficult. Which one should I keep, or should I sell both and opt for a new one? I’m confused. Please advise.

Autocar India
It would make sense to keep your BMW X1 and sell the Mahindra XUV700. While the XUV700 is cheaper to maintain and offers the added flexibility of a third row, the X1 is newer, has a more premium cabin, provides adequate space for five people, and carries the advantage of BMW’s brand value.
