I want a car as a first-time buyer with the best safety features, good power, smooth ride quality, and good handling. My budget is around ₹11-12 lakh on road. My use will be mostly in the city, with some occasional off-road and long-distance driving. Comfort and entertainment should be on point. Please suggest suitable options.

Since you are a first-time car buyer and will go off-road occasionally, it makes sense to go for an SUV or a crossover, which has the double benefit of a high seating position.

It also gives confidence to first-time buyers behind the wheel and a high ground clearance to tackle bad roads and speed breakers. You could consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2 AMT, which has a spacious and comfortable cabin, is well equipped, rides well both on and off road and has key safety features

I’m planning to buy a car under ₹8 lakh with a focus on engine quality, mileage and safety. I’m confused between the Maruti Baleno and Fronx. Is the Fronx truly safer than the Baleno? Since the Fronx has a 4-star rating in Japan NCAP, can we assume similar build quality for the India model? Please guide.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is based on the Baleno, and mechanically and structurally, both are very similar.

Thus, both will be very similar when it comes to safety, too. As for the crash safety rating, yes, the Fronx has secured a 4-star rating in the Japan NCAP crash tests; however, the Baleno has secured a 5-star rating in the BNCAP tests.

So the Baleno is safe too, if not safer, you must bear in mind that there could be differences in the export model. As for the engines, both Fronx and Baleno use the same 1.2 liter naturally aspirated unit. However, the Fronx also comes with the choice of a more peppy and lively 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine

I’ve been riding in a Zen Estilo for more than 15 years and have been satisfied with it. Now I want to buy a new car, but I’m confused between the Baleno and the Fronx. Please help me choose.

We suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. It has SUV styling, higher ground clearance, and is a more modern offering than the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Since Maruti is expected to update the Baleno in the coming months, buying one now may leave you with a car that feels dated soon. SUVs also tend to enjoy better resale value in the Indian market, which works in your favour if you plan to upgrade later.

Our preferred engine choice is the 1.0-litre turbo, but if your usage is mostly within the city and you’re working within a budget, the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine will serve you well too.

Please suggest automatic cars within a budget of 13-14 lakh. My daily running is about 10-12 km, with occasional longer weekend drives (once a month) around the city. Fuel economy and maintenance reliability are important to me. Should I consider a hybrid or an electric vehicle given my usage?

Given your limited running, a hybrid or an EV will not make the most financial sense.

We’d suggest you consider a petrol-automatic. There are many options in your budget, though the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor Turbo are the ones that will best meet your requirements of good economy, low maintenance and reliability.

The Brezza is an upright compact SUV and has the roomiest interior of the options. Its 1.5-litre engine, however, is pleasant but unexciting.

The Fronx and Taisor are essentially the same car. Both are best with the turbo-petrol engine and automatic gearbox option. Performance is impressive, and fuel economy is also good.

I want to buy a new car. I am a first-time buyer and need a car with good build quality, decent mileage, and strong safety features. Most of my travel will be on highways. My budget is ₹9 lakh, and I can stretch it by another ₹1 lakh. Can you suggest the best options for me?

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx would suit your requirements nicely. On your mostly highway drives, the ride will feel nicely planted and secure, and the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol delivers a good enough performance for the highway.
We would have suggested the 1.0-liter turbo petrol unit, as that would deliver better on the performance front; however, turbo petrols are very sensitive to driving style, and often the real-world efficiency is much lower than claimed. In terms of safety as well, this Maruti car handles well and is well equipped with features like six airbags, ABS, and ESP.

I currently drive a 2014 WagonR for a daily office commute of about 30 km and plan to upgrade. My budget is ₹10-11 lakh on-road. My priorities are driving comfort, fuel efficiency, and hassle-free ownership, similar to Maruti; I’m also open to EVs. Please suggest some suitable options.

If you want good mileage, comfort and hassle-free ownership, two options that you can consider are - Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor S+ or Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta+
Taisor is the rebadged version of Fronx. Both options should comfortably fit in your Rs 11 lakh on-road budget, depending on your city. You can expect roughly 13 kpl in the city, and around 18.8 kpl on the highway with the AMT and about 20 kpl with the manual in real-world highway use (Autocar India tested figures).

Both cars offer comfortable seats and a comfortable ride, well-tuned for Indian roads and city usage, making them ideal for daily commuting. Maruti has already proven its hassle-free ownership experience to you, while Toyota is also known for reliability and smooth ownership.

Between the two, you can pick based on which design, brand and feature mix you prefer, but either will tick your key boxes of comfort, mileage and peace of mind.

I have been driving a 2016 Maruti Wagon R VXi for nine years and want to upgrade. My budget is ₹10-11 lakh. I need an automatic car with good mileage, sturdy suspension, and comfortable seating for five. I drive about 1,000 km per month (mostly city) with rare highway trips every six months. Please advise.

That is quite a tall order to fit into your budget of Rs 10-11 lakh. However, given your requirements, we would recommend the Nissan Magnite or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Both compact SUVs give the option of a fuel-efficient naturally aspirated petrol engine with an AMT auto gearbox at a good price, or a more powerful turbo-petrol engine with an auto gearbox that's not as fuel-efficient, but much smoother.

Both have robust suspension that should be capable both in the city as well as on the highway. That said, while both can fit 5, the back seat will be a tight squeeze for 3, but at this budget, almost every car would be.

Here, the Nissan Magnite has the edge on space, and overall, it is more affordable and a better value, too. Hence, it would be our pick for you.

My dad currently drives a 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire Diesel manual, which has run around 1.2 lakh km. He is 65 and mostly drives in the city. We are planning to switch to an automatic for better comfort and convenience. 1. Should we retain the existing Dzire for a few more years or sell it now, considering running cost, age, and expected resale value? 2. If we go for a replacement, is the Maruti Fronx AMT a good upgrade? Any other automatic options (under ₹10–11 lakh on-road) that would be.

If you have a need for a second car, it makes sense to retain the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. However, if the vehicle is going to be parked for extended periods of time, minor issues could arise, leading to recurring maintenance costs. As far as resale value goes, you might want to get your vehicle from a reputed used car platform such as Spinny to find out its fair price.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT is a good replacement - its engine is peppy, AMT (automatic) is smooth by segment standards, and the overall experience is likely to be quite trouble-free. You could also consider a Hyundai i20 IVT for its smoother automatic transmission and refined engine.

Hi, I am looking for a new car with a budget of Rs 10 to 11 lakh with an automatic transmission. I have test-driven the Fronx Delta Plus 1.2, Nexon Pure Plus, and Hyundai Exter. My monthly driving will be around 1,000 km, mostly in the city. Is the AMT transmission a good option under my budget if I plan to use the car for around 10 years?

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx petrol AMT is likely to be smoother and more efficient than the other two options you have listed. This is the one we'd pick for a better driver experience. That said, the Tata Nexon, on the other hand, is great value for money - it is better equipped, is more spacious and feels tougher than the others.
