I’m planning to buy a car under ₹8 lakh with a focus on engine quality, mileage and safety. I’m confused between the Maruti Baleno and Fronx. Is the Fronx truly safer than the Baleno? Since the Fronx has a 4-star rating in Japan NCAP, can we assume similar build quality for the India model? Please guide.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is based on the Baleno, and mechanically and structurally, both are very similar.

Thus, both will be very similar when it comes to safety, too. As for the crash safety rating, yes, the Fronx has secured a 4-star rating in the Japan NCAP crash tests; however, the Baleno has secured a 5-star rating in the BNCAP tests.

So the Baleno is safe too, if not safer, you must bear in mind that there could be differences in the export model. As for the engines, both Fronx and Baleno use the same 1.2 liter naturally aspirated unit. However, the Fronx also comes with the choice of a more peppy and lively 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine

I want to buy a car for my family and am confused between the Honda Amaze VX CVT and the Maruti Swift ZXI+ AMT. It will be driven 80% in the city and 20% on the highway. This will be the first automatic car in my family. My priorities are ease of mind, efficiency, and concerns regarding ethanol blending. I have driven both cars but am still not sure which one to choose.

Go for the Honda Amaze VX CVT. With 80 percent city driving and this being your first automatic, the Amaze’s CVT is its biggest advantage. It is far smoother and more predictable than the Swift’s AMT, especially in stop-start traffic, and that makes a big difference to daily comfort and ease of use. Honda’s ownership experience is generally strong, and the car is well suited to long-term ownership.The Swift ZXI+ AMT is the more efficient car, but the AMT gearbox is not as smooth in city conditions. Being a hatchback, it also has a smaller boot than the Amaze. My current ride is a Fluidic Verna diesel manual, which is nearing 15 years of ownership and has clocked nearly 2.5 lakh km. I am confused between Creta SX IVT and Elevate CVT for 8000 km of annual running with long trips of 1200 km 3-4 times in a year for a family of 4. Apart from this, day to day usage is less than 100km per month. I am looking for a car for long term ownership and travel comfort.

The Creta SX IVT is the better fit for your requirement. It offers a quieter, more refined cabin, comfortable rear seats and a smoother CVT, which are particularly valuable when spending several hours on the highway with four people and luggage. Autocar's long term experience with the Creta petrol IVT also found it refined, comfortable and particularly well suited to road trips.The Honda Elevate CVT has advantages of its own. Its 220mm ground clearance, long travel suspension and large 458-litre boot make it particularly good on poor roads, while its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine and CVT make for a relatively simple powertrain. However, the cabin is noticeably noisier, particularly when accelerating hard, and the CVT can produce the typical rubber band effect.
