Toyota Urban Cruiser launched at Rs 8.40 lakh

Toyota Urban Cruiser prices have just been announced – the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza-based compact SUV is priced between Rs 8.40 lakh and Rs 11.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Available in a total of six versions – three variants and two powertrain options – the Urban Cruiser is priced quite competitive compared to Maruti’s sub-four-metre SUV. Toyota has confirmed that deliveries will begin in mid-October.

    • Toyota Urban Cruiser price range is Rs 8.40-11.30 lakh
    • All three variants get an automatic gearbox option
    • Prices are slightly above respective Vitara Brezza variants

    Variant-wise prices are given below:

What features are available with each Toyota Urban Cruiser variant?

As with the Glanza, Toyota will not offer a bare-bones ‘base’ variant with the Urban Cruiser and the range instead begins with the pretty well-equipped 'Mid' variant. This ‘entry-level’ Urban Cruiser Mid variant is equivalent to the mid-spec Maruti Vitara Brezza VXi. Features such as LED headlights, LED DRLs, LED tail-lights, wheel covers for the 16-inch steel wheels, a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth, steering-mounted controls, keyless entry and go and an automatic air-con are on offer with this trim.

The top-spec Urban Cruiser gets LED fog lamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an auto-dimming inside rear view mirror, cruise control and automatic wipers. When Toyota Kirloskar Motor had begun accepting Urban Cruiser bookings, we had reported that there would be a new brown paint option available with the SUV. There are five other colour options on offer with the Mid and High variants – white, silver, grey, orange and blue. Dual-tone colour options are only available with the top-spec Urban Cruiser Premium – the brown and blue colours get a black contrast roof, while the orange finish comes with a white roof.

Is there a Toyota Urban Cruiser diesel model?

In a word, no. Considering the Toyota compact SUV is a badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, it’s a petrol-only model. Both sub-four-metre SUVs are mechanically identical – a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, which makes 105hp and 138Nm of peak torque, sends power to the front wheels via either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.

This also means that the Toyota should performance as well as the Vitara Brezza. Urban Cruiser mileage figures, as per ARAI, are identical as well. The manual version is rated at 17.03kpl, while the Urban Cruiser automatic posts a higher 18.76kpl, thanks to the mild-hybrid tech on offer.

Visually, the Urban Cruiser and Vitara Brezza can be differentiated just from the front end – the rear and sides are too similar to tell apart from a distance. The Urban Cruiser's interior is also only slightly different from the Maruti.

Compared to its rivals in the compact SUV segment, the Urban Cruiser is neither the most expensive nor the most affordable, but it’s priced lower than the Mahindra XUV300 and the Ford EcoSport, overall. The Toyota costs just a bit more than the Vitara Brezza, but mid-spec versions of the Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue are also priced lower – do note that Hyundai Venue turbo prices start at Rs 8.51 lakh, which is slightly higher than the base Urban Cruiser and mid-spec Vitara Brezza. The Tata Nexon has the most affordable automatic variant and also the most affordable model here with a sunroof.
