Tata has preponed the launch of the Punch micro SUV to October 18 with deliveries expected to commence around Diwali. The carmaker had previously said that prices for the Punch would be announced on October 20 at the time of unveiling the micro SUV. Bookings for the Punch opened on October 4.

Tata Punch: engine and gearbox details

The Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 86hp and 113Nm of torque. It will come mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic gearbox.

While this engine already does duty on the Tiago, Tigor and Altroz, in the Punch, it additionally features automatic engine start/stop functionality to aid fuel efficiency. The AMT gearbox on the Punch also features traction modes like some bigger Tata SUVs. Tata motors says the Punch will do 0-60kph in 6.5 seconds and 0-100kph in 16.5 seconds. Tata Punch: how big is it?

Dimensionally, the Punch measures 3,827mm in length, 1,742mm in width, 1,615mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,445mm. It has a ground clearance of 187mm and a boot capcity of 366 litres. The Punch is based on the ALFA architecture, same as the Altroz, and gets 90-degree opening doors and a flat floor on the inside.

Compared to its rivals – Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Mahindra KUV100 – the Punch is the longest and widest and also has the longest wheelbase and highest ground clearance. Given its tall nose, upright stance and heavy body cladding all around, the Punch also looks the most SUV-ish among its rivals.

As per Tata, the Punch also has class-leading breakover, approach and departure angles and water wading capability. The micro-SUV has an approach angle of 20.3 degrees, departure angle of 37.6 degrees, a rampover angle of 22.2 degrees and a water wading depth of up to 370mm.

Tata Punch: gets a long feature list

The Tata Punch will be available in four trims: Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative. The base Pure packs in kit such as dual airbags, ABS, ISOFIX child seat anchors, front power windows, central locking and engine start stop tech.

The Adventure adds in addition kit such as an audio system with 4 speakers and steering mounted controls, electric adjust wing mirrors, rear power windows, follow me home headlamps, a USB charging socket and full wheel covers.

The Accomplished packs in tech such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay rear view camera, fog lamps, keyless go and cruise control. The Accomplished variants sit on 15-inch stylised steel wheels.

The top-spec Creative trim will be quite generously loaded with features. In addition to the tech from the Accomplished trim, it gets features like a 7.0-inch semi-digital instrument cluster, automatic projector headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, a rear wiper and washer, puddle lamps and 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

Tata Punch: Customisation packs

The Tata Punch will additionally be offered with some customisations packs for the variants. The Pure and Adventure will be offered with a Rhythm pack, while the Accomplished and Creative can be had with a Dazzle and IRA pack, respectively.

The Rhythm pack for the Pure trim will add in an audio system with four speakers and steering mounted controls, while in the Adventure it will upgrade the standard audio system with the 7.0-inch Harman touchscreen replete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

On the Accomplished, the Dazzle pack will get you projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 16-inch diamond cut alloys and a black finished A-pillar. The IRA pack for the fully-loaded Creative trim, as the name suggests, adds in Tata’s iRA connected car tech to the package.

Tata Punch: expected price and rivals

The Punch will be a new entry point to Tata’s SUV range with prices expected to range between Rs 5.50 lakh and Rs 8 lakh. Apart from rivalling high-riding hatchbacks like the Ignis and KUV100, the Punch will also rival the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger compact SUVs due to its extremely competitive pricing.
