New Maruti Suzuki Ertiga fuel economy figures revealed

Maruti Suzuki will launch the second-gen Ertiga on November 21, 2018. The MPV will go on sale with two engine options – a 1.3-litre diesel and an all-new 1.5-litre petrol. Both engines promise high fuel efficiency thanks to the added benefit of the Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) technology.

The new Ertiga petrol comes with Maruti Suzuki’s SHVS technology for the first time. The petrol will get a dual-battery setup as seen on the new Ciaz. The conventional lead-acid battery will power the vehicle and the idle start-stop tech while an additional lithium-ion battery is used for torque assist, and will be located under the front passenger seat. The Ertiga diesel, however, will continue with a single-battery setup for the SHVS system, just like its predecessor.

The Ertiga is also based on Maruti’s new Heartect platform which makes it about 10-20kg lighter than its predecessor, aiding the MPV’s fuel economy figures. While the base versions seem to weight the same (1135kg for the petrol and 1220kg for the diesel), the heaviest versions of the older Ertiga have a kerb weight of 1185kg for the petrol and 1265kg for the diesel. The heaviest versions of the new Ertiga weigh in at 1170kg for the petrol and 1245kg for the diesel.

As a result of this mild-hybrid system, the new Ertiga petrol returns an ARAI-rated 19.34kpl and 18.69kpl for the manual and automatic transmissions, respectively. This is a significant rise from the outgoing petrol car’s 17.50kpl for the manual and 17.03kpl for the automatic. The new Ertiga diesel is more frugal as well as it returns 25.47kpl in comparison to the 24.52kpl of the first-gen Ertiga.

The new Ertiga will be offered in 10 variants with two engine and two gearbox options. Bookings have been officially opened with the booking amount set at Rs 11,000. The MPV will be retailed from Maruti’s Arena showrooms and will compete against the likes of the Mahindra Marazzo and the Renault Lodgy.
